I was raised in Overton, Nevada (Clark County) and back in the early 70s around The Valley of Fire on the desert , we used to find like lots of wierd looking rocks , specially along the MUDDY RIVER (which ran alongside my dad's farm and Wayne Newton's Arabian horse farm which I used to work as a kid)and Rogers Springs (an old fish hatchery natural pond now full of tropical fish) , we farmed back in the day up there so we were constantly out on the desert along man made water reservoirs and used to find lots of wierd looking rocks, but back then we were kids and had no idea if any of them rocks had gold in them .. .

    Chris,
    sooooooo glad to discover you and your videos , website, book ect. I plan to get the book. Yours and Jeff Williams'.
    A friend and I are very much newbee, amateur prospectors. We have over the last 7+ years explored a half a dozen areas in Nv, using a metal detector, without any success. Zilch. Lake Mead, Gold Butte, Tulie Canyon, Johnnies, a couple of miles north, west of Goodsprings. Total bust.
    We are clueless to the mineral deposit we should look for, be aware of. Also , I'm speculating, perhaps, in yhe Tuli Canyon, the gold was 3 feet below the surface, beliw the range of our detector. And knowing the location of the source in all of these revions would be helpful.
    We were hindered by not having a 4 x 4 vehicle..Now we have.
    So Im hoping, optomistic we have better luck going forward.
    Thank you for your time.

      If you are going to look for placer gold, you need to look where placer gold has been found. some parts of lake meadhas gold, but a whole lot has no gold and almost all is illegal to detect. Gold Butte is a hard rock area, Nuggets have been found at Johnnie, but the area is well claimed. Goodsprings is a hard rock base metal area, no placer gold. Download the Gold placer of Nevada book by Maureen Johnson and read it.

We found an awfully heavy small rock with Iron, black rock, riddled with quartz, small crystals and possible pyrite etc. I know they are thinking about using pyrite in solar panel use. Also had no idea that it has or is arsenic?
    How do we identify what is really in this rock and handling it properly?

He need not find lots of gold but I would love to take him somewhere that he is highly likely to find at least a few very small flakes so he can say he actually "found some gold". This is 100% about the experience rather than making money. Any suggestions? Chris, I recently learned from a lecture from CWU, (Nick Z) that there is evidence of northern Nevada being over the hot spot that Yellowstone sits on now. It would explain the refractory in the high sulfidation zone and the big Gold being on the low sulfidation zone on the other side of the fault.
    Will Yellowstone produce this kind of Gold deposition one day ?

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This idea of Nevada over the Yellowstone hot spot is not universally accepted, but is thought by some geologists. Will Yellowstone have gold maybe half a mile or a mile below the surface?, perhaps. Check out my video on Yellowstone and gold deposits.

      @@ChrisRalph I did, and I'm a believer in Basalt flooding happening in stages. There is Basalt in Yellowstone older, like from an initial phase and opening. Then we have main phase emptying the caldera until collapse, (however long) , and a now closing phase of cooling over a long time with water that can't get out of the caldera and an goes through the down and up system of hydro-thermals. There's a basalt footprint from SW in Wyoming. I look at all Nevada from the sky and Southern Nevada looks like natural rift or trust faults merging with detachment faults under from subduction plates. they look almost like ocean waves, but not a lot in the Northern part of Nevada. The pattern disappears in the North.

    Should do a video on how to find and get the old reports, I say this because everyone always says rind the mines reports and I can never find anything I bought a bunch of books hours of internet research talked with mines and it's always a background conversation of find the old reports and see what type of gold and sizes they were getting but I can't seem to find this one elusive thing I always hear about 😢

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not all reports will have all the exact information you would wish for. The books I recommend ,like gold placers of Nevada by Maureen Johnson have a bibliography. you can look up those books for further information.

    Hi you said you answer our comments and questions. So I literally just spent $160 on prospecting equipment. 2 large metal detectors, 1 hand held spotter, a shovel and hand held pick are. So I never done this before, but am very serious about doing prospecting. I heard that there are a lot of abandoned gold mines in Pahrump. For someone like me, a total rookie, where would be a good place for me to start mining for nuggets?

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just because there are old mines, it does not mean they are abandoned. Most of what looks old is under a current, legal mining claim. The GPAA chapter in Las Vegas and perhaps some others have claims near Pahrump in the Johnnnie district. These claims do have gold that you could recover. Going on an outing with experienced club members will help a total rookie like you learn the ropes of finding gold. You can find them with Google or you can also find them on Facebook at: facebook.com/Lvchaptergpaa/
      Not really sure what metal detectors you have, but not every super cheap Chinese metal detector made to find coins is suitable to find gold. Again, you can learn a lot from the club members. Talk to Deanna, who is the president. So yes, I answered your question, it may not be what you wanted to hear, but its what you need to hear.

      @terrybrown106 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisRalph ok. Thank you. As far as my detectors, I brought silver with me and tested them and it did pick up the silver. The one detector said in its manual that it does pick up gold.

    Thinking about going to Elko area metal detecting for gold.. can I just drive out into the desert and if it looks empty detect? Blm ok? Any idea about legal issues in that area? Where can I not go and what should I be aware of? Thx for any replies or advice, really enjoyed the video

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did you watch the video? did it say just anywhere in the desert has good gold?
      No, you can’t just prospect anywhere - there are other people's mining claims and other lands not open. Join a prospecting club - there are many and you will learn more and they will have claims you can work for gold.

    Chris I like your videos Could you give a lecture on great basin paleo gold Nobody seems to know anything about it nor does anyone talk about it I think it's the last big deposits of placier gold left unmined Nevada This is the type of deposit that I'm currently mining. It's taken me over 20 years to figure it out.

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paleo just means of comparatively recent geologic age, and most placers likely fit into that category. Its not a special term.

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except that the Bonneville flood drained into Idaho and Eastern Washington, not much at all into Nevada. No doubt some gravels were concentrated in Idaho and Washington, but most of that has been subject to ongoing erosion since and much that was formed is gone.

Honestly I know nothing of, but I've been just watching your channel and it's helping a lot but I want to say, I came across a lot of interesting stones in my yard, that has a lot of sea shells and rocks that a prior owner had put across. Its all sand, and goes on it and I did find two rocks full of silver next to green rocks. How can i get it checked

      Nevada has more turquoise deposits than all the rest of the USA put together. Our black opal deposits have beautiful stuff, but its unstable for jewelry use.

    And here I thought that gold panning was a recreational activity. I can see why not allowing gold claims. But the government shouldn't stop panning. To me the government takes things too far. And the gold doesn't do anyone any good unless it found. And I doubt anyone would get rich.

    • @ChrisRalph

      The problem with panning in Nevada is not government prohibition, but a lack of water unless you haul it in.

    are you saying we produce 156 tons of gold a year on average in Nevada? as remarkable that sounds it's a real eye-opener when you do the consensus report on gold reserves by country. USA being the leader and top most holder of gold at 8,300 + tons give or take.
    Which in today's market roughly equates to less than a half of billion dollars.🤔🤨😬🙄😞

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      more around 200 to 250 tons of gold per year. There are a lot of big gold mines in Nevada. That said, most of the gold is microscopic and recovered by cyanide leaching.

Kevin passed away a few years quite a few years back. he used to buy storage units one day he bought a storage unit that was full of mine maps. the kind of maps that you needed two hands to open the drawer and the drawer expanded beyond your two hand grip the paper maps were about 5 ft long and 4 ft wide and there was a rock specimen in the unit as well. the previous owner used that specimen to Swindle people into investing into the gold mine. I say Swindle because that rock specimen contained 8% gold 92% pyrite. especially in Rock was about as big as a basketball and cut in half exposing the minute amount of the gold,
