  • Even YOU can grow the world’s smallest watermelons! Here is where you can get seeds: amzn.to/2cwWVGE
    These are not actually watermelons, but very close and certainly will get more kids to try them rather then by calling them a Mexican Sour Gherkin which they really are. These cucamelons are delicious and so fun to eat!

    Had a small patch of these come up in the middle of our lawn this spring before the first mow. Dug it up and planted it along the four foot chain link fence to see what it would do. That one tiny plant wound up spreading over two panels! If I plant more they may grow thick enough to make a decent privacy screen.
    Also, it made an impressive amount of fruit from that one small transplanting. They do taste good! One important caveat to mention, do not eat the fruits after they have turned a beautiful dark purple. It is tempting to think they are ripe at this stage but they actually turn slightly toxic (not to be confused with poisonous) and could wind up giving you diarrhea. So remember, green is ripe!

    I planted about 5 plants about three inches apart next to my regular cucumbers on a 6 foot trellis. They totally filled in the trellis, crawled over and started growing into my tomatoes and their supports for about 4 foot more or so. Not a problem, as the vines are so light weight. They have been producing fruit all summer, more so by the end of August. I am in zone 7b. I planted them around mid to end of May, after starting indoors. They looked so delicate when I transplanted them, I thought they would never make it. My cukes are dead, and these are still going. We had a very hot, dry summer and they showed no signs of stress. As Luke mentioned, no problems with any bugs attacking them, or disease. I have a feeling many will come up in their own next year, as the fruit drops off the vine if you miss it. At first I was annoyed they are small, and hard to see at times. Now after my cukes died, I am so happy I planted them! I got my seeds off of eBay.

    • @MIgardener
      @MIgardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I completely agree. The vines are not a problem when they are all growing together because they are just so small. So glad you had such great luck with them!

      Does the meat of the cucamelon ever turn red, or have red juice? I live in Hawaii and found what I thought was baby wild watermelon vining over some trees & bushes. It would make much more sense if they were cucamelons. However, the meat will turn red, expecially if the birds get to it. The juice sometimes will have some red to it also. Also, when you do you know when they're ready to be eaten?
      With how prolific these things are (they literally grow like weeds - I've been pulling them thinking they're weeds), I would like to actually grow a trellis of these as a living barrier in a part of the yard that we don't have anything growing in.

      I'm in 7b also. The birds gift us with these sprouts and, if you know what you're looking for, you can transplant them from the yard to the garden or trellis. I plant mine along a four foot chain link fence we have and they just go to town.

    These grow wild here in Central Texas and can be invasive if they get into irrigated beds. I've had to unstrangle a large rose garden from them. Granted I also harvested hundreds in the process. They make great little dill pickles. I have one that comes from under the edge of my patio and takes over a 15ft x 10ft section of wall on the front of my house and then some, it's amazing how far one plant will grow. Am glad to know they can regrow from tuber. I was wondering how it managed to regrow from the exact same spot this year. LOL

    Thanks for the information. I've been wondering about them. Now will definitely grow them. BTW, one thing you can do about mildew is spray with a solution of bicarbonate of soda. I learned that from my old Organic Gardening and Farming magazines and it works beautifully. I can't remember the proportions, so I just dump about 4 or 5 TBS of soda to a gallon of water and it works.

    Can anyone tell me how and when to overwinter the cucamelon tubers?

    • @Tehstool
      @Tehstool 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm going to try overwintering them this season. As far as I know, they can be overwintered in zones 7+. It looks like you just cut it down when the vine starts to die out and then you mulch over top of it. Hopefully it works for me.

      We let the tomatoes run their life, and then when they are almost done we pick the tomatoes and bring them in for the season to ripen in a paper bag. They don't taste the greatest this way but for freezing or soup it really doesn't matter much.

    I bought your seeds for cucamelons, I got spiky tiny fruits growing beneath the flowers. I’m a bit disappointed that I have not only pokey plants, but also scary tiny fruits that look like a cross between Indian bitter melons, cucumbers?, and cactus fruits? all in a tiny fruit on my vines. I haven’t tried the fruits, I just decided to grow and continue to observe this strange plant. I’ve grown cucumelons from seedlings I’ve gotten from a local farmer during Earth Day a year ago, so I’ve had something to compare from growing from seeds.. I just had to come back to this video to compare what I have grown from your seeds vs your plant 🙈 this is more of a surprise discovery vs a complaint lolz... I wish I can show you how my cucamelons are coming out. Maybe they’re mad that they’re growing in a container with a tomato cage and bamboo sticks for support? 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’ll just try to maintain it til it dies down and hopefully I’ll have the courage to open and try them. I feel like I got frankenseeds which reminds me of your squashes/pumpkins that voluntarily grew this year; which my cucamelons remind me of whenever I’m in the garden and I take a peak on the fruits to see if they end up looking like regular cucamelons or even cucumbers at least, but still see those frankenfruits that wants me to poke myself just to try em. Idk how I could fix that but they’re still growing in time for Halloween too😅 😂
    Don’t worry I’m still a fan and a customer, I originally went to your online store for pepper seeds and just be a crazy pepper lady.. but ended up picking up more items and were delicious and some plants (like the lettuce tree) just grew flowers and I let them go to seeds from spring; now I’m reaping from the seeds that grew (even though I still have a bunch of open packets of hundreds of original seeds that I bought from your website)

    Luke, what is the best way to save seeds from these? I have to save some, but not sure how.

    • @robrod7120
      @robrod7120 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure too much about these, but from experience i just leave the fruit on the vine as long as i can. then i take the seeds out and throw them with a little water (and if youre in a rush a tiny bit of sugar) in a jar and cover with paper towel for a couple days to a week. it might stink so move it somewhere where you cam deal with it. then wash the seeds and dry them, and youre good!

      Let them get nice and mature. Just let them stay on the vine and you will save seeds from them just like you do with cucumbers or any other melon.

      My cucamelons never got those big orange flowers. Those do like like nasturtiums in the video growing beside his actual cucamelon.

    Here in the Philippines, we saw it almost everywhere. We doesn't know it's edible; the birds love munching those, so it must be the clue.
