Not a cruiser person, but I love the look of this bike. Even the fishtail pipes are growing on me. I've never known anyone to buy a BMW for it's amazing sound. Traditionally, they are a quiet bike.
The bike’s grown on my a lot, but I still can’t get around to liking the cans. Yes, I know they’re styled after classic pipes, but to me they just look like drop tanks lol
At 76 years old I have been riding 54 years and have been without fuel gages and gear indicators most of my life and I just reset the trip meter each fill up and knowing what gear I am in by rpm and knowing that I am shifting up or down it's all on me! Modern fuel gages aren't so accurate anyway!
@ronaldthomas9396 The problem with some people is they want the bike to do everything for them.I'm a purest. All I need is a throttle a seat, a clutch lever, shifter, brakes, and an open highway.👍

Very good & thorough review. Not my thing but quite a machine. Although maybe a little flawed & seems the Rocket 3 might be a better proposition? On a slightly separate note along the retro side of things, I was hoping you might be able to try the new Moto Guzzi V7 at some point.
As a tribute to the earlier R32 and as a cruiser, it's a stylish and unique machine that should be celebrated for what it is. With buckets of torque, strong brakes, and predictable (if limited) handling, it's a stress free enjoyable ride, that doesn't require your license to at risk to put a grin on your dial.
Checking the engine oil - I don’t have a paddock stand and after deciding that putting blocks of wood under the side stand on my RnineT Racer wasn’t the best idea I settled on sitting on the bike, keeping it upright and leaning over using a shaving mirror to view the oil level 🇬🇧🏍
Nice solution. The sightglass being under the cylinder heads makes checking the oil level especially difficult. Judging by TMFs lugging about test trying to balance the R18 upright and get down to view the level could easily lead to tears.
Another way of doing it is sit on the bike upright, and use your phone to take a picture of the sight glass, it allows you to concentrate on keeping the bike bolt upright rather than looking down. Your welcome! :-)
Lack of centre stand an issue with flat tyres? Can you just get away with puncture repair kits? I'd definitely get a clear screen,heated grips and seats. No optional reverse gear for this model? If it was available,I'd get a top box for that bike as I don't carry pillions. Would changing the brake pads give the front discs more bite and feel?
I liked the video, and the comments you made, it’s not a bike on my radar but still interesting to hear about it. I watched Teapots video after yours and he has a different opinion, but that’s great. You forgot to mention the fuel tank can hold your shopping list whilst doing 70 or even 80 now thats a BIG positive,hopefully on your way to Aldi Germany
I can’t decide between the Harley Lowrider ST and the Badger version or the BMW Cruiser have test rode both bikes. The demo BMW R18C Cruiser had a better seat the std and better suspension and sports exhaust anyway thanks 😊
The interesting thing is they have 3 models now and the both the bagger with the windshield and panniers rides better and has better suspension. The transcontinental is an amazing bit of kit. Test rode it and was blown away not so sure about the price very much out of my price range.

Interesting review. There seemed to be quite a few niggles for a bike which is nearly £20k. You mentioned this and the Triumph Rocket 3 being your favourite cruisers... No place in that list for the Speedmaster? Which is considerably cheaper and probably a more practical everyday bike.
To put it into perspective, the 2021 Speedmaster now comes with comfort rider and pillion seat as standard, as well as cruise control. I've just spec'd one up as a possible purchase with pannier rails and soft panniers, heated grips screen and sissy bar/back rest (for nervous wife) for a little over £13k. The BMW is £19k and doesn't even have fuel gauge!
Not sure about the exposed drive shaft. Some Guzzi (Daytonas, V11s) had exposed shafts and you did really need to keep on top of keeping the UJ and splines greased
Interesting review, especially given that I own and ride a HD Low Rider S. Personally, I think this bike is aimed squarely at Harleys Softail Slim. It has some advantages over the HD in the fact it has riding modes, which the Harley doesn’t, but it’s all a bit sterile in comparison. Get yourself on the HD Slim and see how that stacks up beside it
That will be interesting. Apparently the worst handling of the soft tails due to the size of the rear tyre.....but one of the best looking. If you want performance and handling, low rider s is the way to go.....and don’t ride it in the rain!
What do you really think about the R 18?? I just bought the new 2023 R 18 Anniversary edition and as you know they are numbered. 1923 were made and distributed world wide. But would you believe I got No. 1. What do you think of that and does that make it more valuable? I love the bike because I already have a 2022 R18 Transcontinental and absolutely love it. Hope your doing well and keep up your great videos.
Rode a 2005 Honda VTX 1800n for a number of years and I loved it! I think this may be my next 'monster'. Great Review and the fact it's almost designed for customization gives it another plus. Lastly, just like the Honda VTX engine the German Boxer is also bullet proof.
I love the VTX. I almost picked one up, but it was a little heavy off the kickstand. The R18 feels like a lightweight, easy to maneuver at low speeds, easy to push around the garage. I hope the reliability is like you say it is. I have always had Hondas and never had any issues. I couldn't resist this bike after I saw it for the first time.
Love the look of that Beemer, not sure I could live with that exhaust for long though. Just hoping I'm not to old to ride by the time there are second hand examples on the market at a reasonable price
I ride a r nine t scrambler. Today I rode 200 km on an R18. Quite a great experience! Up to 100 km/h, 3 gears are enough. Rides almost as agile as the BMW Scrambler. It felt like sitting on a Porsche engine on two wheels. Really great machine. The mass is in the engine and when riding sporty (modes: Rock), this mass is converted into speed. I didn't want to get off ...😀😊
Thank you for another outstanding video! Sadly had too many commercials and got irritating! I preferred the bike as a concept and now they’ve changed the overall look and sound! Question, what gloves did you wear? I couldn’t help but notice them when you rode at night and saw them illuminated!
There is a thread on the R18 forum about owners having the opposite problem of TMF; they could get it into reverse but not out. One owner said it happened when the bike was under "load", i.e. on an incline. Really BMW? A reverse system you can't disengage when the bike's on an incline? Where else would you use it? However, other owners who had the same problem said cycling the clutch lever once or twice frees it up; maybe doing that would help not just in disengaging the system but engaging it as well. Also, someone in the thread looked up a parts diagram for the system and said it doesn't run off the starter motor, it has its own separate electric motor.
Conditions to reverse: Motor on Brake engaged No clutch Side stand in Neutral Then press lever down After that release break and press and hold starter button.

I was seriously looking to buy one of these but the lack of a fuel gauge put me off…. Not keen on range anxiety…never sure whether you will have enough in the tank to the next refill. Ordered another cruiser instead.
@@TheMissendenFlyer Hi again… I’ve ordered a Harley Davidson Lowrider S 117cu. Nicer to ride than the Beemer (handling, performance etc.) and having had 6 Harleys over many years with no issues I have kept the faith. I’ve had other bikes too over the years but I like a cruiser now and resale is far and away better than other brands. And, it has fuel gauge…lol.
I have a confession to make! I commented about a month ago that I preferred the HD Lowrider S 117 (and ordered one with a deposit) to the R18 First Edition. Well, I have just recently had the opportunity to have a proper road test on both bikes, back to back over the same route. I was pleasantly surprised to find the R18 was more comfortable, better riding position, offered LED indicators, reverse, cruise control, heated grips and to be fair looks a lot nicer with the chrome and retro design. So, I have cancelled the HD and bought the R18….lol. I am willing to be without a fuel gauge as well! Interesting how wrong one can be without riding back to back over the same roads. So I now eat humble pie!

Fantastic review, honest & pretty spot on over Andy! I’ve had mine now here in Australia since November last year. So mate I’ve enjoyed an Aussie summer, which was actually our coolest for some 20 years. Yeah a cool Aussie summer! 😆🥵 I’ll give you top marks mate for your dedication, for want of a better term, riding in those bloody awful conditions! 🥶 Thumbs up my friend!👍🏼 Mine was loaded & actually came with the locking fuel cap. Ironically it looks identical to yours? Did you try rotating/sliding the dead centre of the cap?... Yes no fuel indicator is a slight pain but the fuel light comes on with 5L to go. So with a tank holding some 16L it’s fair warning. When it does come on it begins to count k’s/miles traveled. The brake foot peg was a small issue so maybe a minor adjustment is needed? As for the reverse, initially I had some trouble engaging but I’ve found now with some 3,500km on it’s getting better. Also it makes a difference when it’s WARM!🤣 Aside from the negatives you’ve pointed out, I absolutely love my R18!😍 The smile never leaves my face even if I’m just looking at it. Again, a very good & thorough review! Cheers & stay safe through your COVID situation over there. Fingers crossed light is coming at the end of the tunnel! 🤞🏻🙏🏻🍻🇦🇺

Wonder about your opinion of the BMW R18. I already have a BMW R18 Transcontinental and absolutely love it. I am No. 1 on the list from my BMW dealer for a New R18 100 year anniversary model. Can’t wait!! My question to you is would you buy this bike if you were able ??
OK, BMW want to break into the cruiser market, especially in USA, but it will be a mountain for them to climb. In a few years it will be interesting to find out how many R18s BMW actually sell & if they recoup the development costs, but of course no company would reveal “commercially sensitive” info like that. Sorry to be negative but no matter how good the R18 is I suspect it will go the same way as the R1200C = quietly dropped from their model range after a few years. And I have exactly the same expectations & reservations about HD breaking into the ADV market with the Pan America!
One thing you didn’t mention (or I didn’t hear at least) was cruise control. I waited for the Classic that addresses some of your negatives. Add windshield, better sounding (and looking) exhaust, ample bags, cruise control and the option for footboards. I kept the pegs as the footboards seemed stubby. The Classic also has a fatter 16” ft tire to smooth out the ride and improve handling. The lack of a fuel gauge is the real head scratcher. 🤔
Rocket 3 definitely the way to go for this style of bike but a lovely looking machine nonetheless. I think you missed the most crucial part of the review though - what make of sticky notes are you using that will stay on during an 80mph blast down the motorway!
Good review. Wouldn't buy one myself. When I move my bike around I put myself on the side opposite the side stand. It's easy to prop a bike up from the side you are on so may as well be on the side that doesn't have the stand. Then a fall either way is covered.
Good video old chap! I saw on of these at a recent service at Bharnstormer and they look very imposing/smart/well finished. Not a bike I'd personally buy but the bike looks like an amazing piece of engineering and very well made indeed.
I'm really interested in this bike, the only thing that's putting me off is the engine size and the resulting high fuel consumption. A 1300cc in my opinion would be just right I reckon!
What do you think of F9's recent oil change test?? Does it make you worry about your Ducati at all? I've been obsessed with the 2020 V2, but it's making me think twice before getting one.... Interested to hear your take! Thanks
Thought it was a great video, although as Ryan said the science was a bit flawed because the bikes weren't run in similar circumstances. Either way, my Ducati has never given me an issue so I'm not worried in the slightest....
As an ex BMW R1100S owner I am happy to see BMW going out og their comfort zone and building something different. Now as a Moto Guzzi California Audace 1400 owner I think Guzzi built a far better bike then the BMW. Yes it is also a transverse mounted twin but because it's a 90 degrees V-twin there is plenty of ground clearance on my Audace compered to the R18. Basically the Guzzi rides more like a big naked bike XJR1300 or a GSX1400 then a tipical cruiser. It also has 3 riding modes (rain touring and sport) plus 3 stage traction control that can be switched off. Plus cruise control is standard. Now the best thing about the Audace are the brakes big 320mm radially mounted Brembos that are amazing(my previous bike was a 1000cc sport bike so I know what good brakes are like) my Audace has 96bhp compared to R18 91bhp but being a Italian Vtwin it is higher up in the rev range. Red line is at 7000rpm so the fun time is between 4.500-7000rpm. But the Guzzi has less torque but it is good 35kg lighter so I recon in gear roll ons would be quicker cause you could hang to the gears for longer. I hope the R18 will sell well so BMW would make a more aggressive version of it something that looks more like the R18concept/2 cause I think that bike would appel to a bigger crowd. Still I enjoy Ur review and I'm looking forward to more content.
I’ve got to say after watching all of your HD reviews and then coming to this one (the oldest video of the bikes I’m considering that you’ve reviewed) I’m really intrigued by some of the things you’ve critiqued on the R18 that were items you approved of on the HDs. Perhaps it’s time to have another ride after all those Harley’s?

Since finding out the EU/AU Harley’s are Thai assembled from parts made 49% outside of the US the “real deal” legacy has kinda rubbed off and I’ve found myself focussing more on features and price. For comparison sake, Fender guitars made in Asia/Mexico are far cheaper than those bearing a Made in USA sticker. Is it fair to expect production savings to be passed on in the bike world? (Triumph has offshored a majority of its component production yet remain substantially more expensive compared to Royal Enfield). It’s a genuine thought/question.
You would think it’s possible to have markings on the sight glass that indicates correct levels while it is on its side stand, manufacturers can’t assume that owners will always have a paddock stand or a second person around to assist with checking oil levels.
Lugging about in reverse, could you use the reverse gear thingy it has and just sit on the bike ? Sod doing a work out like that, I got a motorbike because pedalling bikes was knackering me ! and I wrote this too soon , you demo reverse not working !
Hey TMF! I own one of these and i think i know why the reverse wasn't working. Bar a simple failure, on my bike I've noticed there's a "half step" to the reverse rocker. In this half step it will say that reverse is on on the gear select screen, but reverse wont engage. The rocker has to be all the way down, and sometimes it doesn't move all the way down making you think the half step is full engagement. Rocking the bike a little back and forth (a bit like steering lock on a car) will get it to move and switch. This same issue will happen switching from reverse back into neutral. The lever will not move without a little bit of movement from whatever your current position is, again similar to a steering lock in a car. I have the R18 Classic, so windscreen and same diameter front and back tires, so it handles much better than what I've seen people say the base model handles
I enjoy these in depth reviews, very informative. I don’t like how the rear mudguard sits so high, looks odd. I also found the foot area cramped under the cylinder heads. I also suffered terrible hip cramps. Other than that I think the bike is stunning, but I’ll keep my Road King. Cheers.
Howdoo TMF Being a Harley rider and that is my daily ride i can see what BMW was going for but not sure if i would make the change. However as always great review. Cannot wait for the next tour video's after Corona madness is done.
A good and interesting review. Not my thing and far too big and heavy for me but I have to say I like the styling. But, TMF - how many more ads can you get in your reviews? I gave up counting after 5! Still worth the watch though as ever.
Sorry to say, I agree two many ads. Some TH-camr’s have joined Odysee. I appreciate that the ad revenue helps the channel and the work put in the videos deserves some remuneration, but the number of ads almost makes it unwatchable. Sorry Andy!

The problem with all naked bikes, especially ones which can travel quickly, is that you end up pulling the handlebars. The wind blast on your body turns you into a sail and your arms end up as landyards (or whatever the correct naval term is) and it can be very tiring on long runs. These bikes are for posing on in big cities, they are not for loading up and going on a big trip.
Yes a few have said that. Odd that I was able to engage reverse and it said "R" on the dash at that point though......counter intuitive to me because on my GoldWIng you do have the engine running to engage reverse....
@@TheMissendenFlyer The boot clearance for the shifter is a big negative. If you're seeing the fault with your shoe size it'd be no go for size 12 ones.
I really appreciate your honesty in the review of the R18. Many other reviewers don't review bikes in every possible road condition and varous speeds. For example, no one mentioned that the R18 engine actually protects the riders legs from wind at highway speeds! In my opinion, BMW should have designed a lighter, more user friendly R model for new riders and seasoned riders. As an option, add a quick shifter. Also, I believe it is too expensive for many potential buyers. It is also not a practical bike to ride around town at slow speed. But agree with you it's how the bike makes you feel when you ride it that is important.
@@ColtonBlumhagen still doesn't do it for me really, the r9t is better looking and the rocket 3 is better looking than both. But if the looks justify the price for some people that's fair enough for them.
@@Marcus538 it's definitely big, but it's a fantastic looking bike compared to this monstrosity in my eyes. But as I said looks are subjective it's how they ride that matters most to me, which is why I wouldn't own either personally. If you go and test drive both however you will see the difference, this thing feels it's weight, almost every bit of it. The rocket whilst it's certainly is no nimble street bike feels agile to the point a bike of its size has no right to.
Another great honest review. I don’t like it at all. Far too heavy, basically a car engine in a bike frame. The sound nil points. I bet the cost of a service is through the roof, it being a BMW. It’s not a bikers bike IMO I really enjoyed the review as I do all of your reviews. Thanks again, you did a great job with that one. Yes it's squarely aimed at the US market I suspect and I also suspect they are too Harley focussed to really go here - I hope I'm wrong as BMW have been brave coming up with this and that should be encouraged! All that said, a thing of beauty - really nice bit of engineering.
so is it possible that you can somehow upgrade the exhaust if bmw would let ya. I feel like barely anyone is showing how this bike would truly sound. there are mods out there bud nobody how bought the bike enough to show how it would sound (ive repeated the same sentence like 3 times now :) )
Hi MSF, surely a quick phone call to BMW would have solved the issue of how to engage reverse, really don’t understand why you did not get clarification. Good review but never in a million miles would I want this bike, a cruiser with minimal luggage ? I just look at it and think why?
What makes you think I promote motorcycle manufacturers? I love riding bikes and review them from time to time, I can assure you I have nothing to do (in terms of any kind of commercial relationship) with any motorbike manufacturer or dealer, never have and never will!

I love mine except for 1 thing.....the chrome on mine was not properly done....it has tiny cracks a all over the chrome under the top coat. For the price I'm disappointed with that being a 25 year harley bagger rider.....im having trouble with the dealer cooperation in this matter. I know I've had it looked at and was deemed to be a improper chrome job, by a builder and a chromer, other than that it's fun. After riding a 1000 pound bagger riding this feels like a toy. It lugs around like you say like a minibike.....not scary at all......i move it about in and out of trailers and the garage easy......you want to feel a heavy bike move a full press roadglide with all the kit on it...lol. I got mine here in the USA late September of 2020.......like I said other than the faulty chrome plating, i love mine to the point I sold my roadglide for it......cheers

I have had mine (Classic) for a month now, I love it. Yep its bit of a lump and lane splitting is now bit of a memory Vs my Rebel 1100. I have the rear shock on minimum preload and the ride is 95%. Its a fantastic bike. Reverse is easy but the lever needs to be fully engaged. Sweeping lean angles similar to the Honda and the growl when winding on is nice for me. I love HD but every man and his dog has one... The view looking down is pure art in motion. The Honda is for sale.
You overlooked the dangerous lack of ground clearance. Where I ride even doing the limit I would be scraping in every corner. There would be no margin for the unexpected.
you do know that every motorcycle manufacture has to go through some type of noise control from the government. I thought that bike has a reverse gear? Can you tell me which bike has keyless sterring lock?
Ok, maybe some tips, just to clarify things a bit. first off, great review as always, you show some interesting and different points on motorcycles that other journalist mist or simply don´t consider important when reviewing a bike. but that are some things that might help a bit. the brakes for example. front brakes on a cruiser motorcycle. as the bike is longer and lower than a normal motorcycle there is less weight transfer. that weight transfer helps with the brakes (fork diving is another matter). so the front can sometimes feel a bit vague. and since there is less weight transfer to the front, the rear "becomes" more effective. but will probably activate the ABS early. in the golden days without ABS, you really learned this as the bike would skid the rear real easy. engineers know this and some times they can and choose to work around this and sometimes they won´t or don´t want to becuase of the design and purpose of the bike. i haven´t ridden the R18 but, i´ve owned harleys and other motorcycles for about 25 years from various periods and that is usually the case. of course it could be that the front master cylinder is a little vague in feeling and that the ABS masks the feel also. of course someone will say .. i have this bike and it stops like this and like that and so on... No, do me a favor and go out on that bike again and start using both front and rear brakes, you´ll figure out the proper pressure required at the rear before the ABS kicks in. start with they rear and immediately (less that a second) grab the front. basically stabilizing the bike and then stopping. give a try and let me know if the braking feels better. you´ll figure it out.

Very good & thorough review. Not my thing but quite a machine. Although maybe a little flawed & seems the Rocket 3 might be a better proposition? On a slightly separate note along the retro side of things, I was hoping you might be able to try the new Moto Guzzi V7 at some point.
As a tribute to the earlier R32 and as a cruiser, it's a stylish and unique machine that should be celebrated for what it is. With buckets of torque, strong brakes, and predictable (if limited) handling, it's a stress free enjoyable ride, that doesn't require your license to at risk to put a grin on your dial.

Checking the engine oil - I don’t have a paddock stand and after deciding that putting blocks of wood under the side stand on my RnineT Racer wasn’t the best idea I settled on sitting on the bike, keeping it upright and leaning over using a shaving mirror to view the oil level 🇬🇧🏍
Nice solution. The sightglass being under the cylinder heads makes checking the oil level especially difficult. Judging by TMFs lugging about test trying to balance the R18 upright and get down to view the level could easily lead to tears.

Another way of doing it is sit on the bike upright, and use your phone to take a picture of the sight glass, it allows you to concentrate on keeping the bike bolt upright rather than looking down. Your welcome! :-)
@@richhelm21 Those cylinder heads are huge (and hot). Using a phone might be tricky. Worth a try though.
Checking oil on a R18 needs a second person... Check the BMW options list.😉
Lack of centre stand an issue with flat tyres? Can you just get away with puncture repair kits? I'd definitely get a clear screen,heated grips and seats.
No optional reverse gear for this model?
If it was available,I'd get a top box for that bike as I don't carry pillions.
Would changing the brake pads give the front discs more bite and feel?
It does have a reverse gear as standard - I just struggled to get it to work!

I think a faulty sensor is why the Reverse did not work. My new bike had the same problem. It was changed prior to delivering the bike to me.

I can’t decide between the Harley Lowrider ST and the Badger version or the BMW Cruiser have test rode both bikes. The demo BMW R18C Cruiser had a better seat the std and better suspension and sports exhaust anyway thanks 😊
I assume the “badger” version has a white Le Mans stripe?
The interesting thing is they have 3 models now and the both the bagger with the windshield and panniers rides better and has better suspension. The transcontinental is an amazing bit of kit. Test rode it and was blown away not so sure about the price very much out of my price range.
Loved that side comment about the open shaft drive passing regulations - I was wondering about that myself as well. Great video as always, keep up the good work!

Interesting review. There seemed to be quite a few niggles for a bike which is nearly £20k. You mentioned this and the Triumph Rocket 3 being your favourite cruisers... No place in that list for the Speedmaster? Which is considerably cheaper and probably a more practical everyday bike.
Sorry the Speedmaster slipped my mind - I do love that bike - straight to the top of my list for that one!
To put it into perspective, the 2021 Speedmaster now comes with comfort rider and pillion seat as standard, as well as cruise control. I've just spec'd one up as a possible purchase with pannier rails and soft panniers, heated grips screen and sissy bar/back rest (for nervous wife) for a little over £13k. The BMW is £19k and doesn't even have fuel gauge!

Not sure about the exposed drive shaft. Some Guzzi (Daytonas, V11s) had exposed shafts and you did really need to keep on top of keeping the UJ and splines greased
Interesting review, especially given that I own and ride a HD Low Rider S. Personally, I think this bike is aimed squarely at Harleys Softail Slim. It has some advantages over the HD in the fact it has riding modes, which the Harley doesn’t, but it’s all a bit sterile in comparison. Get yourself on the HD Slim and see how that stacks up beside it
I shall be riding more Harley's soon - starting with the Fat Boy - can't wait!!
That will be interesting. Apparently the worst handling of the soft tails due to the size of the rear tyre.....but one of the best looking. If you want performance and handling, low rider s is the way to go.....and don’t ride it in the rain!

What do you really think about the R 18?? I just bought the new 2023 R 18 Anniversary edition and as you know they are numbered. 1923 were made and distributed world wide. But would you believe I got No. 1. What do you think of that and does that make it more valuable? I love the bike because I already have a 2022 R18 Transcontinental and absolutely love it.

Rode a 2005 Honda VTX 1800n for a number of years and I loved it! I think this may be my next 'monster'. Great Review and the fact it's almost designed for customization gives it another plus. Lastly, just like the Honda VTX engine the German Boxer is also bullet proof.
I love the VTX. I almost picked one up, but it was a little heavy off the kickstand. The R18 feels like a lightweight, easy to maneuver at low speeds, easy to push around the garage. I hope the reliability is like you say it is. I have always had Hondas and never had any issues. I couldn't resist this bike after I saw it for the first time.
Love the look of that Beemer, not sure I could live with that exhaust for long though. Just hoping I'm not to old to ride by the time there are second hand examples on the market at a reasonable price
I ride a r nine t scrambler. Today I rode 200 km on an R18. Quite a great experience! Up to 100 km/h, 3 gears are enough. Rides almost as agile as the BMW Scrambler. It felt like sitting on a Porsche engine on two wheels. Really great machine. The mass is in the engine and when riding sporty (modes: Rock), this mass is converted into speed. I didn't want to get off ...😀😊

Thank you for another outstanding video! Sadly had too many commercials and got irritating! I preferred the bike as a concept and now they’ve changed the overall look and sound! Question, what gloves did you wear? I couldn’t help but notice them when you rode at night and saw them illuminated!

There is a thread on the R18 forum about owners having the opposite problem of TMF; they could get it into reverse but not out. One owner said it happened when the bike was under "load", i.e. on an incline. Really BMW? A reverse system you can't disengage when the bike's on an incline? Where else would you use it? However, other owners who had the same problem said cycling the clutch lever once or twice frees it up; maybe doing that would help not just in disengaging the system but engaging it as well. Also, someone in the thread looked up a parts diagram for the system and said it doesn't run off the starter motor, it has its own separate electric motor.
Conditions to reverse:
Motor on
Brake engaged
No clutch
Side stand in
Neutral
Then press lever down
After that release break and press and hold starter button.
This bike is just too expensive in my opinion,its 28k here in Ireland,you would nearly buy an rnine t and a speed twin for the same money.

IN Australia the BMW R18 makes the equivalent Harley Davidson seem like exceptional value for money.
Nice review. To engage reverse you push down on the reverse lever and rock the bike back and forth just a bit and you should feel it click into place.
I used rock my 1964 Vauxhall Viva back and forth to get it to start.

I was seriously looking to buy one of these but the lack of a fuel gauge put me off…. Not keen on range anxiety…never sure whether you will have enough in the tank to the next refill. Ordered another cruiser instead.

Nicer to ride than the Beemer (handling, performance etc.) and having had 6 Harleys over many years with no issues I have kept the faith. I’ve had other bikes too over the years but I like a cruiser now and resale is far and away better than other brands. And, it has fuel gauge…lol.
I have a confession to make! I commented about a month ago that I preferred the HD Lowrider S 117 (and ordered one with a deposit) to the R18 First Edition. Well, I have just recently had the opportunity to have a proper road test on both bikes, back to back over the same route. I was pleasantly surprised to find the R18 was more comfortable, better riding position, offered LED indicators, reverse, cruise control, heated grips and to be fair looks a lot nicer with the chrome and retro design. So, I have cancelled the HD and bought the R18….lol. I am willing to be without a fuel gauge as well! Interesting how wrong one can be without riding back to back over the same roads. So I now eat humble pie!
That headlight looks like it has a very severe cut-off. No good for seeing Skippy on a downhill road in the outback.
With the weight of the Beemer you probably won't even notice if you do give a wallaby a wallop.

Fantastic review, honest & pretty spot on over Andy! I’ve had mine now here in Australia since November last year. So mate I’ve enjoyed an Aussie summer, which was actually our coolest for some 20 years. Yeah a cool Aussie summer! 😆🥵 I’ll give you top marks mate for your dedication, for want of a better term, riding in those bloody awful conditions! 🥶 Thumbs up my friend!👍🏼 Mine was loaded & actually came with the locking fuel cap. Ironically it looks identical to yours? Did you try rotating/sliding the dead centre of the cap?... Yes no fuel indicator is a slight pain but the fuel light comes on with 5L to go. So with a tank holding some 16L it’s fair warning. When it does come on it begins to count k’s/miles traveled. The brake foot peg was a small issue so maybe a minor adjustment is needed? As for the reverse, initially I had some trouble engaging but I’ve found now with some 3,500km on it’s getting better. Also it makes a difference when it’s WARM!🤣 Aside from the negatives you’ve pointed out, I absolutely love my R18!😍 The smile never leaves my face even if I’m just looking at it. Again, a very good & thorough review! Cheers & stay safe through your COVID situation over there. Fingers crossed light is coming at the end of the tunnel! 🤞🏻🙏🏻🍻🇦🇺

OK, BMW want to break into the cruiser market, especially in USA, but it will be a mountain for them to climb. In a few years it will be interesting to find out how many R18s BMW actually sell & if they recoup the development costs, but of course no company would reveal “commercially sensitive” info like that. Sorry to be negative but no matter how good the R18 is I suspect it will go the same way as the R1200C = quietly dropped from their model range after a few years. And I have exactly the same expectations & reservations about HD breaking into the ADV market with the Pan America!
I hope you're wrong about both bikes, but very strongly suspect you're dead right!
One thing you didn’t mention (or I didn’t hear at least) was cruise control. I waited for the Classic that addresses some of your negatives. Add windshield, better sounding (and looking) exhaust, ample bags, cruise control and the option for footboards. I kept the pegs as the footboards seemed stubby. The Classic also has a fatter 16” ft tire to smooth out the ride and improve handling. The lack of a fuel gauge is the real head scratcher. 🤔
Rocket 3 definitely the way to go for this style of bike but a lovely looking machine nonetheless. I think you missed the most crucial part of the review though - what make of sticky notes are you using that will stay on during an 80mph blast down the motorway!

Wouldn't buy one myself.
When I move my bike around I put myself on the side opposite the side stand. It's easy to prop a bike up from the side you are on so may as well be on the side that doesn't have the stand. Then a fall either way is covered.

I don't think I had the stand down and that wasn't the only time I tried to get reverse to work on this bike....

Thought it was a great video, although as Ryan said the science was a bit flawed because the bikes weren't run in similar circumstances. Either way, my Ducati has never given me an issue so I'm not worried in the slightest....

As an ex BMW R1100S owner I am happy to see BMW going out og their comfort zone and building something different. Now as a Moto Guzzi California Audace 1400 owner I think Guzzi built a far better bike then the BMW. Yes it is also a transverse mounted twin but because it's a 90 degrees V-twin there is plenty of ground clearance on my Audace compered to the R18. Basically the Guzzi rides more like a big naked bike XJR1300 or a GSX1400 then a tipical cruiser. It also has 3 riding modes (rain touring and sport) plus 3 stage traction control that can be switched off. Plus cruise control is standard. Now the best thing about the Audace are the brakes big 320mm radially mounted Brembos that are amazing(my previous bike was a 1000cc sport bike so I know what good brakes are like) my Audace has 96bhp compared to R18 91bhp but being a Italian Vtwin it is higher up in the rev range. Red line is at 7000rpm so the fun time is between 4.500-7000rpm. But the Guzzi has less torque but it is good 35kg lighter so I recon in gear roll ons would be quicker cause you could hang to the gears for longer. I hope the R18 will sell well so BMW would make a more aggressive version of it something that looks more like the R18concept/2 cause I think that bike would appel to a bigger crowd. Still I enjoy Ur review and I'm looking forward to more content.

I’ve got to say after watching all of your HD reviews and then coming to this one (the oldest video of the bikes I’m considering that you’ve reviewed) I’m really intrigued by some of the things you’ve critiqued on the R18 that were items you approved of on the HDs.
Perhaps it’s time to have another ride after all those Harley’s?

Since finding out the EU/AU Harley’s are Thai assembled from parts made 49% outside of the US the “real deal” legacy has kinda rubbed off and I’ve found myself focussing more on features and price.
For comparison sake, Fender guitars made in Asia/Mexico are far cheaper than those bearing a Made in USA sticker. Is it fair to expect production savings to be passed on in the bike world? (Triumph has offshored a majority of its component production yet remain substantially more expensive compared to Royal Enfield).
It’s a genuine thought/question.
You would think it’s possible to have markings on the sight glass that indicates correct levels while it is on its side stand, manufacturers can’t assume that owners will always have a paddock stand or a second person around to assist with checking oil levels.

Lugging about in reverse, could you use the reverse gear thingy it has and just sit on the bike ? Sod doing a work out like that, I got a motorbike because pedalling bikes was knackering me !

Hey TMF! I own one of these and i think i know why the reverse wasn't working. Bar a simple failure, on my bike I've noticed there's a "half step" to the reverse rocker. In this half step it will say that reverse is on on the gear select screen, but reverse wont engage. The rocker has to be all the way down, and sometimes it doesn't move all the way down making you think the half step is full engagement. Rocking the bike a little back and forth (a bit like steering lock on a car) will get it to move and switch. This same issue will happen switching from reverse back into neutral. The lever will not move without a little bit of movement from whatever your current position is, again similar to a steering lock in a car.
I have the R18 Classic, so windscreen and same diameter front and back tires, so it handles much better than what I've seen people say the base model handles

I don’t like how the rear mudguard sits so high, looks odd. I also found the foot area cramped under the cylinder heads. I also suffered terrible hip cramps. Other than that I think the bike is stunning, but I’ll keep my Road King. Cheers.

Bike has a electric reverse why did you not use that while sitting on the bike to back up and check the rear turn radius ? So easy.....

I always assumed (wrongly) that TMF inserted the advertising.
...I only have the ability to "monetise" (hate that word) or not, and as TH-cam now makes up the bulk of my income and as such is my "job", it is necessary for me to switch the ads on - sorry about that - a necessary evil. TH-cam decides when, where and how many ads to serve based on view uptake, subject matter, etc....again apologies.

The problem with all naked bikes, especially ones which can travel quickly, is that you end up pulling the handlebars. The wind blast on your body turns you into a sail and your arms end up as landyards (or whatever the correct naval term is) and it can be very tiring on long runs. These bikes are for posing on in big cities, they are not for loading up and going on a big trip.

I suspect that you don't have the engine running to reverse as you're using the starter motor.
Yes a few have said that. Odd that I was able to engage reverse and it said "R" on the dash at that point though......counter intuitive to me because on my GoldWIng you do have the engine running to engage reverse....

The boot clearance for the shifter is a big negative. If you're seeing the fault with your shoe size it'd be no go for size 12 ones.
I really appreciate your honesty in the review of the R18. Many other reviewers don't review bikes in every possible road condition and varous speeds. For example, no one mentioned that the R18 engine actually protects the riders legs from wind at highway speeds! In my opinion, BMW should have designed a lighter, more user friendly R model for new riders and seasoned riders. As an option, add a quick shifter. Also, I believe it is too expensive for many potential buyers. It is also not a practical bike to ride around town at slow speed. But agree with you it's how the bike makes you feel when you ride it that is important.

The rocket 3 is big & ugly , if you ride a bike , superiority isnt an issue, theyre all ridiculessly fast etc

But as I said looks are subjective it's how they ride that matters most to me, which is why I wouldn't own either personally. If you go and test drive both however you will see the difference, this thing feels it's weight, almost every bit of it. The rocket whilst it's certainly is no nimble street bike feels agile to the point a bike of its size has no right to.

Far too heavy, basically a car engine in a bike frame. The sound nil points. I bet the cost of a service is through the roof, it being a BMW. It’s not a bikers bike IMO

Yes it's squarely aimed at the US market I suspect and I also suspect they are too Harley focussed to really go here - I hope I'm wrong as BMW have been brave coming up with this and that should be encouraged! All that said, a thing of beauty - really nice bit of engineering.
so is it possible that you can somehow upgrade the exhaust if bmw would let ya. I feel like barely anyone is showing how this bike would truly sound. there are mods out there bud nobody how bought the bike enough to show how it would sound (ive repeated the same sentence like 3 times now :) )

Hi MSF, surely a quick phone call to BMW would have solved the issue of how to engage reverse, really don’t understand why you did not get clarification. Good review but never in a million miles would I want this bike, a cruiser with minimal luggage ? I just look at it and think why?
Well BMW even showed me how to use it!! So I guess there’s a knack to it I was missing....

What makes you think I promote motorcycle manufacturers? I love riding bikes and review them from time to time, I can assure you I have nothing to do (in terms of any kind of commercial relationship) with any motorbike manufacturer or dealer, never have and never will!

I love mine except for 1 thing.....the chrome on mine was not properly done....it has tiny cracks a all over the chrome under the top coat. For the price I'm disappointed with that being a 25 year harley bagger rider.....im having trouble with the dealer cooperation in this matter. I know I've had it looked at and was deemed to be a improper chrome job, by a builder and a chromer, other than that it's fun. After riding a 1000 pound bagger riding this feels like a toy. It lugs around like you say like a minibike.....not scary at all......i move it about in and out of trailers and the garage easy......you want to feel a heavy bike move a full press roadglide with all the kit on it...lol. I got mine here in the USA late September of 2020.......like I said other than the faulty chrome plating, i love mine to the point I sold my roadglide for it......cheers

I have had mine (Classic) for a month now, I love it. Yep its bit of a lump and lane splitting is now bit of a memory Vs my Rebel 1100. I have the rear shock on minimum preload and the ride is 95%. Its a fantastic bike. Reverse is easy but the lever needs to be fully engaged. Sweeping lean angles similar to the Honda and the growl when winding on is nice for me. I love HD but every man and his dog has one... The view looking down is pure art in motion. The Honda is for sale.
You overlooked the dangerous lack of ground clearance. Where I ride even doing the limit I would be scraping in every corner. There would be no margin for the unexpected.
you do know that every motorcycle manufacture has to go through some type of noise control from the government. I thought that bike has a reverse gear? Can you tell me which bike has keyless sterring lock?
Yes I did know, yes it does have reverse (although I couldn't get it to work) - I don't know of any.
Ok, maybe some tips, just to clarify things a bit. first off, great review as always, you show some interesting and different points on motorcycles that other journalist mist or simply don´t consider important when reviewing a bike. but that are some things that might help a bit. the brakes for example. front brakes on a cruiser motorcycle. as the bike is longer and lower than a normal motorcycle there is less weight transfer. that weight transfer helps with the brakes (fork diving is another matter). so the front can sometimes feel a bit vague. and since there is less weight transfer to the front, the rear "becomes" more effective. but will probably activate the ABS early. in the golden days without ABS, you really learned this as the bike would skid the rear real easy. engineers know this and some times they can and choose to work around this and sometimes they won´t or don´t want to becuase of the design and purpose of the bike. i haven´t ridden the R18 but, i´ve owned harleys and other motorcycles for about 25 years from various periods and that is usually the case. of course it could be that the front master cylinder is a little vague in feeling and that the ABS masks the feel also. of course someone will say .. i have this bike and it stops like this and like that and so on... No, do me a favor and go out on that bike again and start using both front and rear brakes, you´ll figure out the proper pressure required at the rear before the ABS kicks in. start with they rear and immediately (less that a second) grab the front. basically stabilizing the bike and then stopping. give a try and let me know if the braking feels better. you´ll figure it out.
