I love the song , great job Stuart. I remember when this song came out harry played it on the tonight show and had such a big response by the viewers that harry played it a second night . First time that had happened in the history of the tonight show.
Great job! So lucky you got to see him! I learned to love his music from my parents who played him, Jim Croce, James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel, etc. All etched in my mind forever.
Thank you p 🙂. I was a big fan of Harry. Saw him a couple of times in concert here in the UK. Great stories. Sad loss. 🙂 Thanks for listening and commenting it means a lot 🙂🎸
You succeeded 🤪😱😂 Transporting me to another period of my life🤪😱😂. Brilliant. Thank you, Don’t know if I’m sad for me or all of “Harry’s” fans out there.. Take care buddy.
Decided to try and learn this classic song (classic on my side of the pond anyway!) and looking for videos that displayed the chord progression. Thought you did a very admirable rendition and captured also the melancholy/reflective mood of the song's storyline and liked the 'editing' also to make it a more straightforward story. You were fortunate to have seen Harry in person as I was not and also recall he was a genuine 'celebrity humanitarian' and much ahead of his time for his giving and generous spirit ! Thanks for posting and i think i'll learn your version !
Thank you Dave. I gather you're in the US? Yes in concert Harry was one of those artists who made you feel like they're singing to you personally, and it felt like he was your friend. A wonderful warm character who I still miss. I loved this story but I couldn't figure out how to play the middle section. It was an almost operatic performance by his bass player. So I left it out. Felt a bit like a betrayal messing with Harry's lyrics, but I don't think it loses any of the story. You probably know he wrote a sequel to the story (called"Sequel") just before he died. I still follow him on Instagram, and his charity is still doing good work. What a lovely man 🙂. Good luck with learning it, and it means a lot to know my music is shared and enjoyed. 🙂🎸
@@stuartclifford8795 Stuart, I don’t offer many comments so surprised that i received a reply from you ! Yes, i am in the US in the state of Pennsylvania and more specifically outside of Pittsburgh. In my learning and playing of the song, i do plan on omitting the operatic ‘bridge’ of the song and always felt it really didn’t fit the song and offers odd lyrics that baffle me really. I have to say i am currently following matters in England as i am a bit of a tennis follower and the Wimbledon tournament has just commenced. I will also give praise and accolades to my most favorite singer/songwriter from London …Cat Stevens ! I was in college when he was popular and he was my motivation to pick up and learn guitar. Still ‘hacking’ away at it all these years later.. i’m not that good but i do enjoy it still. Relatedly, years ago i bought a 1971 Martin D35S guitar that i would say is my most cherished possession. Have 4 sons and two play the guitar rather well so I’ll let them fight over it when that time comes! Odd feeling that the internet ‘shrinks’ the world such that we can have a neighborly conversation from across the pond ! Best regards and keep posting !
Beautiful. I’m trying to learn the song! After you come out of the verse and go to the G what is the next chord? Also the last chord at the end for “when I’m stoned”? Lovely cover and story thanks for sharing :)
Hi Mark. Thank you for your kind words 🙂. I'm not quite sure where exactly you mean, but if it's the G where it goes "and she said how are you Harry", the G comes in on "said", and at "Harry" it changes to a D major, with a little flourish on the top string, taking the finger off the string, playing it open and then placing it back on the 2nd fret again. At the end on "stoned", that's a D7 triangle with a similar flourish, taking the finger off the first string, playing it open and then back onto the second fret again, and then repeat. I hope that makes sense, but please come back to me if I have misunderstood or if you still can't figure it out 🙂. If you like Harry's story did you know he wrote a sequel story song, called "sequel" from the album of the same name. He wrote it 10 years after Taxi, and the story in the song has moved on 10 years too. Slightly autobiographical. Unfortunately he died shortly after and if I remember correctly the album was released after his death. Thanks again for listening and commenting it means a lot to me 🙂 🎸
Apologies. I know I missed out the middle bit, which I commented on, but I'm sorry if I got other parts wrong. Maybe I'll revisit. I know how important Harry's lyrics are. It's nice to hear from a Harry fan who is serious about his stories, which I have always been, having seen him twice in concert. Thanks for listening, I'll try harder next time 🙂🎸
I grew up on Harry Chapin - my mom loved him so of course this reminds me of her. Thank you.
❤ Harry was special and made us all feel like a friend.
I miss him and his stores 🙂
Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 🙂 🎸

You need to get the lyrics correct. You're all over the place.
