    All I seem to be reading on here is that reels are better than no reels. Let them market there product and let people feel good about how they want to fish. Don't be the jerk out on the water judging the guy or girl next to you.

      I would say it comes down to where you are trying to fish really. Where I live the streams are no wider than 10 feet in most spots and heavily brushed on either side with low hanging limbs(reminds of a Japanese stream kinda), but the trout are about 1 foot long and take more enticing than dough or spin bait. I have spent many hours with no success using shortened rods, reels, everything I can think of. Fly rods are way to long for my purposes, and spincast is unwieldy for short technical throws and the bait is not convincing enough for the fish. That is why I love tenkara. I am able to get my line where I need it to go with the right bait. Simple But I went from not catching anything to almost getting a bite everytime I cast in a pool. I have been highly successful with tenkara on my streams.

    • @zg6453
      @zg6453 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @-DOPE- Does it really matter which technique you go with as long as it catches fish? Like I said, distance isn't an issue for me. It's also nothing for me to throw a tenkara in a backpack and go. Especially when my sol intent isn't to fish but hike, bike, or camp where I might go fishing along the way. I've found the tenkara to be more versatile than any rod for that simple reason. At the end of the day it lets me do more fishing. Especially when I can apply all the same fly techniques that anyone else would use on the water.

      @@zg6453 I do not see how a fly rod can be "too long" if a tenkara rod works; fly rods are not longer, and often shorter. They use the same basic line and leader. Basically if you take a fly rod, especially a euronymphing rod, and just don't use the real or pull in line, you have functionally a tenkara rod, just does not back as small. I do not see the benefit to be tenkara rods are somehow better on a small streams, just more simple and easy to carry into the stream - which is benefit enough.

    What does it matter to anyone how another person decides to fish? Spinning, fly fishing, Tenkara, cane pole, what does it matter?? This reminds me of an old country song by Hank Williams Junior...."If you mind your own business you won't be minding mine, and if you mind your own business, you'll be busy all the time."

As for being lighter and able to put in you back pack, my 4 piece fly rod is about the same size and OK, 5 oz. heavier. Why not just by a fly rod and just tie a line at the end.

    To understand Tenkara, you must understand where it comes from. In Japan the fish and the rivers generally don't get big like ours, so they specialized in a light weight technique for those environments. I probably wouldn't use Tenkara if I was in a place I would run into larger fish, but its perfectly fine for brookies in small creeks.

    • @gregory4457
      @gregory4457 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pathetic. It is nothing like actual fly fishing and eliminates some of the main reasons for going fly fishing. Tenkara is for people that are incapable of learning how to actually fly fish. And for the very few that can somewhat fly fish, Tenkara is another scam to try and get people to buy their product. If you fish Tenkara, you are part of the "hipster crowd" because ... well .... "I do it and like the other Tenkara Sheep that makes me cool". Just looking at your picture with the frizzy hair and round glasses, etc .... unquestionably part of the "hipster" crowd. Get over yourselves. Tenkara is nothing new and was a way to fish before the sport of fly fishing actually evolved to the sport it is. People would use long sticks/branches (sometimes metal poles) and attached horse hair braided lines to it. Realizing how pathetic that was that style of fishing evolved to actual fly fishing, using reels for which the sport was thus grounded in. You don't "play" a fish with Tenkara, you drag it across the water and beach it or yank on the line and drag the fish across the water. Or as these 2 guys did you just yank the 3 inch fish completely out of the water and watch it slap on the dirt on the side of the stream. You're so right! That was some of the best "playing" of fish I have ever seen! You should be ashamed of even showing up on a stream where actual fisherman exist; which includes fly fisherman, bait fisherman, spin fisherman and others. You Tenkara Sheep are fooling no one, but yourselves. Sad.

    • @verrildd1
      @verrildd1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. I fly fish, have for years whenever I get the chance to get out to the smokies. Most of the streams I fish are pretty small, and I definitely see how simplifying everything with tenkara would be worthwhile. Would I completely abandon traditional flyfishing for tenkara, no, but in certain cases, I'm definitely considering. You don't have to hate something just because you view it as "hipster, you know. You seem pretty angry for someone who I would assume fishes for solitude and peace. On another note, are tournament bass fishermen real fishermen? They just whip bass out of the water with no fight at all.....exactly as you described tenkara with 3 inch trout.

    • @gregory4457
      @gregory4457 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      On your "other note", tournament bass fishing is completely different than fly fishing for trout. I wouldn't compare tournament bass fishing to fly fishing any more than I would compare deep sea fishing to fly fishing for trout. However, I am not a fan of tournament fishing for multiple reasons (especially tournament fishing for trout). Also, you're reading a quick message, without seeing or hearing how I express myself, so if you want to take "angry" from it, I would assume that was YOUR frame of mind while reading my analysis on a marketing scam called Tenkara. You decided to take your anger out on me, when you could have commented on 3/4ths of the comments on this page that speak negatively on Tenkara. I don't hate Tenkara at all, as you assumed. What I do not like is the overhype and misleading statements by the Tenkara groupies in order to fool people unfamiliar with the sport of fly fishing. They should try telling the truth. Just look at the crap Fritz T. Cat (Gee ... not a "hipster" name at all. That's sarcasm) lied about below this comment. IT ... "catches 10 fish to 1 of actual fly fishermen and in half the time" to boot. And that's just the beginning of the lies out of the kitty. Yea, ok kitty. Keep 'em comin'. There are few similarities between actual fly fishing and Tenkara. And, so Tenkara groupies like the kitty are clear on this ... there is nothing they can do with their stick and line that I cannot do with any fly rod and reel. But there are tons of things I can do that the kitty and Tenkara cannot do. It is NOT traditional/real/actual fly fishing. It is a scam to fool people and sell a product. Why can't they just be honest?

      Dapping where I come from, and the other 30 states and countries I've fished in, is letting the fly hang a few feet or less straight below the rod tip. In Tenkara the back cast can be 20' and the fly land 30' in front. I still enjoy my 50 year accumulation of fly, spin, and surf tackle, but Tenkara has added new enjoyment that doesn't threaten my lifelong accumulation of "the way I do it".

      You are assuming I am a young kid, who has not built any fly rods in the past. Might be a bad assumption on your part. You are right about one thing. I haven't built a Tenkara before. Because of your statement, I will make an assumption that you have not fished with some of the old Fenwick Glass Rods or even before them. They were built in a similar fashion, so Tenkara is just reinventing the wheel on this one. I don't really care to be honest with you. Tenkara is "trying" to build a niche in the fly fishing industry due to fly fishing's increasing popularity since "A River Runs Through It". That's fine, but Tenkara fanatics and even Tenkara representatives that I see at the fly fishing shows, are doing traditional fly fishing an injustice. They are trying to compare Tenkara to traditional fly fishing. There is a substantial difference. Tenkara would be more accurate in comparing themselves to the very origin of fly fishing with rods made out of branches, wood, steel and bamboo with the lines made of horse hair. "Dapping" was popular in those days.

    Very nice. However, I shall be sticking to my 5 foot rod and tiny dries as the big Lune brownies and sea trout tend to keep running hard, meaning the extra reassurance of a fly reel is comforting. Plus the danger of hooking a salmon is ever-present too...

    Ok I was in Japan and saw this style of fishing many times. Ultimately, they caught very small fish. Easy under a pound. But for them that was OK. In America it would be bait.

    @tenkarausa These fish are so small that they are sub-sub-ultralight. You don't even need a rod, just a 1lb handline is enough. It's a fine sport for sure, and of course, it isn't just about the biggest fish, but quite frankly, I don't know anywhere where one could fish for critters that small, so it makes it look as if it is a fringe angling tactic best reserved for the most fished out, lowest yielding streams in the USA. Take the show on the road to some real streams with 2-3 bows and cuts!

    Love this way of fishing. When I was a young lad, I used to fish a similar method with just a bamboo blank, harvested on the way to the fishing site from my grandpa's orchard, with a few yards of line (leader). Now, I own a Tenkara but I haven't used it for a long time because I fish mainly for steelhead and salmon. This Tenkara I have will not handle the action of these fish. Are there ones rated for such game fish? Thanks for posting.

    The concept is interesting for smaller waters and smaller trout - small being relative I guess! but I'm a big trout pursuer, big meaning 18" - 22" on small dry flies and I just don't see how I could control browns and rainbows that big that can easily run all my fly line out with a rod that has only line and no reel. I should mention I fish large western tailwaters with flows in the 3500 cfs - 5000 cfs range.

    Hiya me little on line fisher friends, tenkare has got its place. I, like the rest enjoy à good days fishing but tenkara let's me fish in places totally unfishable with my fly rod. I fish à a very lite gear outfit and barbless hooks, its possibly one of the most enjoyable ways to catch and release, PS I can afford and have got several rod and reel outfits of very decent quality.

    I'm not sold on tenkara. I like being able to store line on a reel and being able to reel/strip line back in and casting is part of the fun. 3,4 and 5 wt rods have all the small stream qualities you need tenkara to me honestly looks like some overhyped little kid shit that you can pull off with willow limb for free but to each his own

    Interesting. I fish a lot of small creeks here in Michigan, and at times hammer 15 to 20 inch fish. It's a pain to land them on a 3 wt. and generally need a buddy down stream to net for me. Do the rods fish by wt? Slow action fast - med? Also nice to see some one using a bow and arrow cast. (sling shot cast) Can you roll cast with your rods?

    Tenkara is great... BUT they make out sometimes like Japan invented fishing flies with reel-less rods... yet anybody who has read the likes of Izaak Walton or other very early books would know that this is how they would have presented and fished flies on a fixed line.... it may be traditional Japanese way regards fly fishing, but other people in the world was doing this long before and concurrent with when they first started.

    All right for small streams if you know there's nothing bigger than maybe 1/2 to 3/4lb but if you hooked a decent sized mature brown you would have some struggle to avoid having it spend a few days trying to get the fly out of its jaw after it broke you. Some of the points made are no more than marketing hype to hook gullible folks into a rather inadequate method of presenting a fly. For tiddler-snatching it's probably okay.

      Ian Gourlay I actually have one of these rods and the way they bend acts like drag would on a normal rod, the only disadvantage is that they can't have light line attached to them. I've caught a few 5 plus fish on a tenkara with 15 lb test attached to it and trust me it's hella fun

    • @SirBeauJangles
      @SirBeauJangles 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All rods bend to provide a spring action to dampen down fish movements, that's not peculiar to Tenkara rods... I don't get the point of it. If you can't afford a reel and a fly line maybe there's some appeal - but how many fishers are like that? If as you say you're connected via 15lb tippet then there's an awful lot of fish will shoot off, spooked by the hefty nylon - and I say again that if you scale down to present a small trout fly with any delicacy you stand an excellent chance of a decent fish making off in a way you just can't stop even with max sidestrain - result, a broken leader, & a fish with a fly in its face that it doesn't need. But if you keep to small streams with little or no chance of a larger fish then that's not an issue. I'll not be hanging up any of my many fly rods for one of these - but I reckon you guessed that already! Tight lines to you anyway.

      Ian Gourlay I caught a very nice wild 21 inch brown trout on a tenkara rod last month. The trick is to keep it upstream. To those who have not tried it, give it a chance on a small stream and I bet you will be hooked.

      +Ian Gourlay I'm an avid flyfisherman, and spend lots of time on the San Juan River in my home state of New Mexico. I also fish waters in Colorado. The Tenkara rod that I own, is more than capable of handling decent sized fish. The secret is in the very flexible tip which absorbs the fishe's fight. I've caught beautiful, strong Bows and was able to land them very quickly due to the stout nature of the rod.
      I also own Winston and Sage rods (which are wonderful as well), my Tenkara is just another fun way to catch trout on a fly.

  • @MusicisSol
    @MusicisSol 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry but i watched the video again and that's great. but what about accuracy and timing? I don't know how much line is on one of these "telescoping" poles as we'll call it but what if a beautiful brown is rising or eating scuds 2 feet put of range? Are you going to move through the riffle and create a massive disturbance and not hook the fish. Having a reel allows you to cast to a rising fish right in front of you or 60 feet in front of you. Grab a real fly rod and fish efficiently folks.

  • @micheal4127

    Listen, tenkara isn’t a bad method of catching fish, but the fact that it’s 200 dollars for what is essentially a glorified stick of bamboo is just stupid. I like the branding, and I like the looks, but you could achieve the same effect with a random stick you tie line to the end of. It’s cool, it just shouldn’t be that expensive

  • @onbradley
    @onbradley 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @tenkarausa I get that, it's not the first time I've fished....and I do fish UL in similar situations. It's just that I am used to catching much bigger fish with much lighter line. I mean you could have just ripped those minnows out of the water with the gear you are using. I am not debating the style, but simply I cannot understand why anyone would be gunning for 1/4 lb fish and holding them up to the camera. This does little to showcase the sport, you guys need some new streams I guess.
