If all you've ever done is academia, go out and do physical labor for six months. Then work in a factory for a couple of years, learning how to make things per specs, budget, and schedule. Then go sell cars for a couple of years, strictly on commission. You'll learn business, real business.
I have a Masters, that's exactly what I did in my youth and early 30s. I'm a much better person for it.
Not everything's in a damn book.

Life experience is often undervalued but it doesn't necessarily mean that PhD students do not have life experience I remember a 60+ year old Grandma doing her PhD and she was a powerhouse! Purist academics do not rate highly in my book unless they have branched out and have worked with professionals or charities to better this world of ours. I am not sure they have to do all the things you say they must do but you must also remember most PhDs have little or nothing to do with Business (if it would be business focused its more likely to be a DBA (Doctor of Business Administration). Just because we worked hard in our youth doesn’t mean others have to do exactly the same, my job is to make people better than me not like me, I follow the same rule for my children. If I can cultivate Better, Stronger, More street wise Philosophers than I can ever be then I shall be happy. BTW my brother in Law was a builder and one of the best Philosophers I have met in my life, no PhD not even a degree.

@@ThinkintheCircle wonderfully said and I love your attitude in general. So refreshing and helpful to experience. It's not about every extreme: there are many academics/students who could use some more down to earth "real life" experiences but there are many laborers/entrepreneurs etc who would be enriched by expanding their field of knowledge (I mean, this is true for us all), but maybe more specifically to a broader macro outlook. With that said, many of the people I respect the most who are incredibly intelligent but also just know how to be good to eachother are people who've never been to college.
