So YES Newbie this is ONLY your 5th song by them. This rabbit hole goes DEEP "apart from any reality that you've ever seen or known" before. That's a lyric from one that you've yet to hear from the Title Track of this 3-song album MASTERPIECE called CLOSE TO THE EDGE. "Siberian Khatru" has always been one at the top of my list of YES gems! NOTE Do NOT veer off 70s YES music until you've listened to almost EVERY SONG. This was their peak decade. With each album they took huge progressive LEAPS from 69-79. Each album offers more than ANY OTHER BAND EVER! And that's saying a lot because 70's Pure Prog was incredibly innovative and diverse! YES were just the icing on that delicious cake! and WOW for a NOVICE you grasp the essence of the singer Jon Anderson's metaphoric symbolic poetic lyrics! far beyond what many fans are able to decipher! BRAVO!
SWEET! This is the track they opened many tour performances with, including 1978 when i saw them in person the first time. They did so on the live YESSONGS album too. One of the greatest bands ever.
I remember hearing Yes for the first time - it was like my ears were drinking out of a fire hose.
This song always made me feel like they are taking you around the world, back and forth through time, its wild. One of their most densely layered tracks as well. I am still hearing things I hadn't noticed before!

My first date I ever went on was to a concert with Yes opening for King Crimson and Procul Harum headlining. Felt bad for PH, good though they were, to have to follow, first FRAGILE era Yes and then ISLANDS era KC. I was not familiar with Yes at that point (1971) and was really going to see KC and PH. But walking in while they were already playing “Long Distance Runaround” was a magical experience. And while there was a joint being passed around later, at that moment I was stone-cold sober. But the music made me high.
Still my favorite prog band. This song opened up many of their later tours. And I have seen them many times since over the years: 1973, 1975, 1998, 2002, 2004, I think that was my last time. Each time was special.
That was a Thomas Goff Harpsichord, built in the mid 20th century and was attended by Thomas himself in the studio, as he was still around. An acoustic keyboard from the age of Bach and Beethoven, or just after. Completely acoustic instrument used in chamber music. Played by the great Rick Wakeman the keyboard wizard. Enjoyed your reaction JMBOY. I think you interpreted the lyrical parts that you did as Jon Anderson generally intended. You will read here that Jon says he SOMETIMES writes words because of how they sound and not so much for their meaning. It's easy to then conclude that a part we don't understand must have been one of those sections. I think, given enough time and brainpower MOST of Jon's lines have deeper meanings. Like the music itself, you can come back to many YES songs a hundred times and glean something new. The lyrics are in tune with that. YES encourages you to go deep. I remember once a fan was badgering Steve Howe, the guitar player about the meaning of the lyrics many years later while he was soloing in various clubs around the globe. Steve finally said, "What do they mean to YOU!" And really, that's the ticket. What they mean to you is what the song will help you discover about yourself... If you invest the time.
Jon has said before that when he's writing lyrics he often uses words for how they sound within the melody more than for what they mean. To me his songs often come out as sounding vaguely profound while listening, but on reflection they don't necessarily mean anything in particular.

'Relayer', an album released by the British progressive/jazz/fusion rock group 'YES' back in 1974 is a musical masterpiece. "Gates of Delirium" a track off the album is extraordinary with the transitions in the instrumentation of the arrangement and composition. The song is based on the novel 'War and Peace' by 'Tolstoy' from 1869. "Soon" following "Gates..." is a gentle and soothing prayer for peace and hope, and also is a delightfully pleasant listen. At any rate, keyboardist Rick Wakeman was a genius with 'YES' compared to as was the late Keith Emerson from 'E.L.P.' on keyboards. By the way, the talented Patrick Moraz replaced the departure of Rick Wakeman in '74 as their new keyboardist. 💫🎤🎹🎹🥁🔊🔥☮🎧

Wow, what a great reaction. This tops all Yes tunes. I keep claiming this as my top favorite Yes song. Listen a few times more. I've listened 100 times throughout the years, and it still excites me. It never gets boring.

Jon's singing on this track is about as good as I've ever heard - the bass, the bass! - harpsichord? All the while the drums keeping it going and the guitars just killing it. Maybe my favorite YES song, along with 20 others. I still cannot see how this music will ever be bettered - equalled yes, by Pink Floyd, or Genesis or a host of other English prog bands, but never bettered.

Dude, I first heard this in 1973 and will NEVER forget how this band changed my whole outlook on music. I love seeing your smile and reaction to the flowing changes of this song. YES was The Best at one for a 10 year period. I have seen them 80 times in concert since 1974. Thanks for this. Hope you are a fan now. YES!

The first time I heard this song it left me clueless as to the meaning, nothing has changed, but it sure sounds cool.

New sub here. Yes is one of my faves. The best prog rock band. Liked the video. You're analysis is pretty spot on. Most of the lyrics are obscure and the singer Jon Anderson has said sometimes he just likes the sound of the words and he uses his voice as another instrument. It is distinctive, as is Chris Squire's bass playing. The musicians in Yes are top notch players to be sure.
The "mediaeval" instrument was a harpsicord, which is later than the middle ages, being a baroque keyboard. (more 1700s)
Unlike a piano, in which the strings are struck, the harpsicord strings are plucked.

Great reaction to one of my favorite YES tracks. Someone suggested you try South Side of The Sky, frome their Fragile album. I think that's a great next one for you.
Just think that these guys were in their 20's when this album was made. Goosebumps still......I'm so used to the live version that I rarely hear this one anymore. Drummer Bill Buford would leave the band following this recording (didn't even tour the album) in favor of another 'prog' band called King Crimson. His reasoning was that he had gone as far as he could with Yes musically and just wanted to expand his palette as a musician and play with others. He's always been upset that people thought there was a big falling out which he has always denied. he just wanted to expand his musicality.
He would go on to be one of the world's most influential and innovative drummers in the history of the medium.

Well done on the interpretation! I never thought of it that way, but that fits. In addition to the harpsichord mentioned below, you also heard a sitar-guitar. It mimics the sound of the traditional sitar with the versatility of western guitar construction. Also Steve Howe was incorporating more of his pedal steel guitar arrangements on this album. That instrument added SO much flavor to this and other albums to come.
Listen to both closely....The guitar intro of Siberian Khatru, is repeated in a different timbre, at the close of 'Awaken' (1977)
While people were listening to the Grateful Dead, I was listening to YES. The amazing part, no "Pro Tools", or any type of recording software. All live and analog. Respect.
My favorite era of yes
3:58 you were reacting to a harpsichord These were the predecessors to pianos. Harpsichords plucked the strings vs. the piano striking the string with a small mallet. That is why they sound so different
These were young men in their early to mid-twenties. An era like none other. We used to trip on LSD in the forest with a stereo cassette tape machine and listen to this album.
Hi Sweetie Pie. Steve Howe is one of my favorite guitar players and, lucky for us, he's still out there. My favorite Yes song is "Tempus Fugit." I met him when he was in the band "GTR" with Steve Hackett in 1986. On that album, there's a song called "Imagining" where Steve Howe totally shreds. If you haven't heard these two songs, please give them a try. I think you'll like them. RIP Chris Squire. That was a rough one for me.

That fade out sounds like it could have been twice as long had the left the tapes running. Yessongs live album version for explosive non-fade out ending that snaps you out of the trace and leaves you feeling "wow" what was I just listening to!
I always wish that Steve Howe solo at the end would go on for a few more bars!
In the top 3 of everyone's favourite prog album. This song used to be my least favourite of the 3 tracks on this LP, but has grown for me. This in one of the most prefect albums ever recorded. Not a bad note anywhere. Don't try to decipher the lyrics yet. Most of us fans still have no clue after 50 years....Some theories say the words were chosen for their sounds, not their meanings...SK was the first song played live for many early tours, right after the Stravinsky Firebird Suite intro. Unbeatable live group. Awaken is one of my favourites, for it's spirituality, musicality, and emotional impact. I subscribe to most Yes reactors.

Jon Anderson: "The idea is that Siberia is so far away. The Iron Curtain still existed, and Siberia was like this no man’s land. Russia is such a huge country, and the thought was that life still happens there as it does here ... Even Siberia goes through the same energies that we’re all going through. We’re not unsimilar. We are collectively everyone. That’s one of the main themes of 'Zamran' (Son of Olias)... It opens up about the connection we have with the sun and how everything is from under the ground ... Don't try to understand Yes lyrics. It's more of a feeling that you get from them.
great band, However on songs like this, they get a little too busy for my taste.
