I started drawing again at 52, after not having done any kind of art since I was 13. I wasnt very good at 13 and I am way better now, receiving commissions for my portraits. I think my age helped immeasurably...I now have patience and attention to detail, neither of which I had at 13. It's never too late

Thank you for your inspiration. I am 60 now and after watching the TH-cam videos and reading comments I am inspired to do so much more and have done so much more than when I was busy working my tail off. Sailing, traveling, fishing and now art! TH-cam is a very positive influence because of people like you.

You know, there was that girl who, in every class, kept drawing while the teacher explained Chemistry or Mathematics (I never liked it) so in secondary school I went to the best art school in Lisbon. It's a public school where great artists like Paula Rego came from. who then went to London. She passed away 1 week ago. "The woman who painted fear" I was at this school for 6 years but it was the 80's and I just wanted punk shows. I fell into the world of drugs and my parents weren't as open as most of my peers' parents. They stopped giving money for material in their heads, it was to buy drugs. I didn't even have A 2 sheets, it was my teacher who gave them to me, but he died young with cancer. I had a lot of loss of friends and it got worse when I was only 25 I wanted to die because I lost my boyfriend and 6 months later my best friend who was more than my sister. I went into a deep depression and didn't touch the drawing anymore. I isolated myself from the world until I met at age 29 what would become the father of my daughters. We were both in the heroin world. But I got pregnant at 31 years old and did a treatment alone at home, nor did I smoke tobacco for over 10 years. I taught them to mix colors and bought everything to draw and then I started drawing again. 4 years later I found myself alone taking care of my twins. It was so bad that he took me to court where I got custody but had a very strong relapse. Until today and they have already graduated in languages, cultures and literature and I never picked up a pencil again. I forgot everything. Now I'm retired and I'm still having this damn depression but the money isn't enough to pay for drawing lessons. I still keep my T, which is a wooden ruler that I put on the school table, it was fixed there and there is a square next to it to measure the squadron, the degrees, etc. I don't even know how to use it anymore. Now I saw her video, is it now? It's free or not. I would be happy. Thank you

I've recently started drawing again at the age of 47 after my mum found my school art folder. After reminding myself of some techniques, I can see myself improving and learning each time I draw. It also really helps my mental health as I can get into flow, work through the process, be proud of what I achieve and work out how I'd improve it next time. It's never too late!

Yes I also was decent when i was younger (15) but due to pressure of becoming a adult I stopped drawing seriously for the rest of highschool and now I'm ( 21 turning 22) watching and researching how to get better at drawing. You honestly can stop and start alot it only really degrades if you don't practice every so often.

My entire life the "story" was I was good at math, making things, solving problems, but I couldn't draw. I would joke that my stick figures weren't any good. Recently, at the age of 52, I got that urge to draw, and so I am! As you were saying, it is the actual process I'm finding fulfilling, not how good I am or if I can ever do something with it. I have this sneaking feeling that if I'm ever able to draw a free-hand circle that is actually circular I'll be immediately struck by lighting!

Wow, I’m in my early 20’s and I was just thinking about this. Like, I would always look at those who are younger or the same age as me and they were so advanced. I looked at myself and I felt like I’ve lost all of my 7 years of practice or I’m not as creative as I used to be due to a long period of my art blocks and unfortunate events. I love art so much. I feel bad how I dropped it due to mental health. But, thank you for this! 🙏🏽

I'm in my 30's and when I was a kid, I loved to draw. I had a natural talent for it. But for some reason in my teens, I was too stubborn and only wanted to draw or whatever in art class. I didn't do many other art assignments, so I failed art class in 10th grade.
I was so full of angst and ended up taking CAD for my art credit, then eventually years later I destroyed all of my old art. It's sort of always been in the back of my mind. I even thought about taking art classes in college but felt intimidated; I ended up studying philosophy, another passion.
Recently, I bought a drawing pen for my tablet, so maybe I can start again some time.

I am 49 and sometimes wonder that same question and then think, no, it's not. I don't want to have anymore regrets with the "I can't do that" or "I'm not talented enough". By golly, I CAN, I WILL, I AM! I just wish I already knew what all the different things were so I could choose the 'right' drawing set for me. lol Have a good one, Mr. Schaefer!

Wow I can say that I've heard that a lot - embroidery brought you here. Very interesting :) I'm glad you are loving drawing so far. What was your question by the way? I think I missed it haha. You have a great mindset though! That's really half the battle to be honest. Have fun with it!

I always wanted to be a person who can draw, i have have been drawing , painting
Since my childhood but never really feel urge to improve myself because it doesn’t matter what i draw, drawing makes me feel ease and relaxed but now at the age of 24, i think i should push myself a little harder to improve my skills and to take it more seriously. This comment section and the video assured me that I am not that late.Hopefully i will achieve my dream to be called a proper artist.

As someone who is (almost) 72 yrs old, I can say that arthritis in my hands and grip strength issues are the biggest roadblocks to getting fine work done. It's demoralizing to see loss of motor skills, to even see our handwriting integrity decline. "Never say never" is fine and good, but I find it easier to go with this mantra, "Slow and steady wins the race." Actually at my age, there is no race. Simply finishing is its own lofty reward.

Great message! I have been drawing since I was a kid, nothing serious or that great but I guess i have improved over the years but I feel like if there is one thing I need to get into more and get better at it is this. I have been doing very little so far in my life and have a hard time getting out of old bad habits but it is another tale.. I have problems with looking at where exactly to start and how?
Maybe going to an art school or taking a course could help me since I tend to be bad at teaching myself and tend to lose focus or maybe I just need to find motivation.

Well I have my own course on my website if that's your thing: www.schaeferfineart.com/intuitive-drawing-course
I truly believe you should just focus on the fundamentals and what you're interested in drawing. And if you don't know, then start drawing everything until you find out what you like best. The more you draw, the more you'll improve. Just takes time.

Omg same !! I was also embarrassed of my own skill at that time , since there were people who's waay better than me at that age , I felt like it was pointless now they already improved and are much better than me but I sometimes tell myself that I draw for myself and it doesn't matter if I started late , what matters is to try and who knows maybe I'll actually be a professional at it and do something successful with it, but still I am quite embarrassed to start from scratch now at 16 when there's talented artists in my school but again, I draw for myself and not for people so they can say I'm talented or so , I'm gonna work hard and keep it a secret from everyone, why? So I won't get compared to anyone and get discouraged again

    • @SchaeferArt
      @SchaeferArt  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It depends on what you're interested in drawing, etc what your goals are. I would try to figure out the problem as best as I can and then work backwards and come up with ways to avoid that issue in the future. So for example, if you can't come up with ideas sometimes, then I would personally spend time gathering reference photos, write down lists of ideas - so that when I actually feel like drawing but not sure what I want, I can go through my folders and files and have a lot of inspiration of stuff I already like or am interested in drawing.
Pinterest is great for drawing ideas but I can''t really help you in the productivity department. If you get distracted on there, you have to just try to remember why you're on there and get back on track and work on finding something to draw.
Here's what I did this year: I decided I'm only going to draw / paint cats, owls, and subjects based on photos from my recent travels. These are personal to me and things I enjoy drawing and studying. So now, this whole year - I don't have to worry about what to draw. I have my focuses. And if I get bored with them, then I just experiment. I try a new medium or a new way of drawing them or add something to them, etc.
Hope some of this was helpful in some way. It's something personal you'll have to figure out for yourself but don't let Pinterest take over your time. Use it as a tool and create boards based on your interests for creating art. Save photos for using as references later. Develop some discipline :)
