Elvis was the most beautiful man to ever walk this earth. He had charisma & charm that is out of this world. He had a fantastic voice that only gets better with age and he was a fantastic entertainer. He also had something that I can't describe. He just had IT. I am not of his generation, but I grew up in a household of Elvis fans and obviously became one. I love all eras of Elvis. The 50's, 60's and 70's. His voice is ever changing as he gets older and it only gets better. Elvis recorded hundreds of songs and I love listening to them all, but Elvis was at his best when he was live. He commanded attention and you simply couldn't take your eyes off him whether you were a man or woman. Elvis broke down barriers and took a lot of abuse because of his style of singing and mostly because he moved to the music. Prior to Elvis, most people were listening to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Cuomo, etc...They didn't move when they sang. Elvis is a very important historical figure because he changed the way music was performed and he also changed the culture. He deserves to be honored and remembered for his contributions.

Elvis was a true entertainer. He loved singing, but he was also a jokester and would change his voice or the words to get a laugh from the audience. You can see the mischief in his eyes when he does it. The greatest of all time!!!

That whole thing was a bit of an urban myth. He was filmed from the waist up only on this (his third and final) appearance. After his first two appearances, on Ed Sullivan, there was backlash from the TV censors of the day, so they decided to go forward with it.

That's closer to the beginning of Elvis. That's why there's no sunglasses or anything. My sister saw his first national tour just a year before this. I was seven years old when I watched this broadcast and I was already a dedicated fan. BTW, my sister, who is 81, is still president of an Elvis fan club. If you want to see more 1950s, Elvis, I recommend jailhouse rock the video or scene from the movie by the same name from 1957. You'll then see Elvis doing the moves. That actually drove the girl's crazy. That video was as good as any of the more modern ones that started in the 1980s with MTV.

Elvis was the first to include drums in his music in the 50s. Later, he also added gospel singers as his background. He did many things differently than others.
Those were only two of the reasons why he sounded different and new.
Throughout his career, there were so many things Elvis has done that nobody had done before him. Nobody gets famous for nothing :)

You will be AMAZED how great Elvis is - if you dig into it, Mr Music Sleuth. I saw him live, and have also seen just about every other major artist live. He was better than them all! React to him LIVE in 1970 LasVegas “Suspicious Minds”. As a drummer (I’m a drummer also) you will definitely appreciate his drummer Ronnie Tutt. He played with Elvis from 1969 onward, live and studio.
*edit* Background is a Southern Gospel quartet style.

He had lots of swag from the beginning. But his voice got its full strenght in the early 70s. As a drummer you should definetly listen to his life performences from the 70s, because Elvis didn't only have the most beautyful voice I've ever heard and outstanding vocal abilities, he also used to work on stage only with the best musicians of his time, his drummer in the 70s was a master of his art: Ronnie Tutt. They matched perfectly. You can see it for example in the "suspicious minds" live version from 1970 in Las Vegas.

For myself I like his 54 - 63ish period best... Not the biggest Vegas era, Elvis jumpsuit fan though he has a fair few legendary performances from that period... I was a major Elvis fan growing up and still really love about 30% of his catalogue... My own taste will be a little different to many, I'm not that keen on a some of his most famous offerings always finding the deeper cuts of my favourite period much more satisfying... A great reaction and I feel it would be worth your time digging into the Elvis enigma... "Fame and Fortune" from the 1969 Sinatra Spacial (Welcome home Elvis) is a favourite clip... As a side note Elvis is not my favourite 50's rocker, I have a few others that I prefer but has a total package Elvis really is the man... 🙂🙂

They wouldn't let him dance. If you noticed, they only had him on camera from the waist up. He was purposely keeping it calm, because he was told before hand that he could not do anything that would cause the censors to cut him off. So you were watching a historical moment in rock n' roll, because everyone was waiting for him to defy the censors, but he had respect for Ed Sullivan, so he obeyed their wishes and stayed calm. But the next time he went on tv, he really killed it.

Let's dig into Elvis! Elvis had charisma overload, all he had to do was smirk to send the crowd wild! Nicknamed Elvis the Pelvis because of his gyrations, which led to only showing him from the waist up. The song "I Did It My Way' from his last concert in June 1977 is super touching. He died in August 1977 from years of neglecting his body with crazy amounts of pills.

  • @samhugh4965
    @samhugh4965 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

You’re correct…he was a bomb that went off in the 50s. My husband equated it to a tsunami that not only changed things musically but culturally. He was censored here, and only showed from the waist up. Also, he had a boom mic above his head, which hinders movement. I think the best indicator of what he was like was on The Milton Berle Show performing Hound Dog.
Many people have a caricature image of Elvis from during his Vegas years in which he was in a downward spiral.
If you want to get to know Elvis, I suggest watching the 2022 Elvis movie. My husband says it’s the best he’s seen as far as capturing Elvis. The actor that plays Elvis worked for roughly 2 years on getting his voice and movements down before filming starts, and he does his own singing in Elvis’s early years, but later on, it’s a blend of Elvis and his own voice.

    Thanks for your reaction.
Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory.
Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off.
As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (th-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/w-d-xo.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

it's bizarre now to see only a close-up, but no TV station would allow Elvis to appear from the waist down, as his hip movements were seen as too sexy and risked turning the young generation into delinquents. So he does the weird arm movements at the end as his way of sticking his finger to the TV corporations and their advertisers..
He was a crucial link for the Beatles and Zeppelin.
I'm enjoying seeing you discover the magical path back into the past when music was music, and people sounded as good - if not better - live as on their recordings. Thank you for all the memories...

During 1957 Ed Sullivan, Elvis was only allowed to be filmed from the waist up, so he deliberately intensified his hand gestures etc!!... Song recommendations from his live T.V appearances include 1956 (Not the songs that many would choose): 'Ready Teddy', 'Love Me', 'Too Much' & 'Baby, Let's Play House'... 1960 (Frank Sinatra Special): 'Fame & Fortune' & 'Stuck On You'... 68 Special (1968): 'If I Can Dream'... Live Vegas 1970: 'Suspicious Minds'... This is obviously a tiny selection, if you do enjoy the Elvis journey, it is a very deep rabbit hole with many great performances...

I love that you chose something from Elvis in his prime and not the old Vegas Elvis. His come back tour is great too. I am an Elvis fan.

Elvis 1st live performance at Ed Salivan Show th-cam.com/video/aNYWl13IWhY/w-d-xo.html, Elvis was just starting making records for RCA and this "live" & his moves was a shock for this era, because most of the singers were standing still while singing. Lot of the media tried to cancel Elvis, people was smashing Elvis records, and at his 2nd live at Ed Salivan show (this that you just react) they film him only from the weist up, but girls keep screaming, haha! At Elvis & the black comiunity documentary part 1 & 2 gives lot of information about this era and the inpact Elvis had to people. Thinks was so different that time, Things were so tense that it was banned in Boston, the young people who listened to him were called "juvenile delinquents" , he brought such strong emotions to people, that many wanted to fight him because of his popularity. Ed Sullivan had stated that he would never bring him on the show but was forced to change his mind due to the great success of Elvis' appearance on the rival show Milton Berle th-cam.com/video/cAEruhuQENM/w-d-xo.html&embeds_referring_euri=https %3A%2F%2Felculture.gr%2F&source_ve_path=OTY3MTQ&feature=emb_imp_woyt while Frank Sinatra, who was also popular at that time, declared that rock music destroys young people. Later on he was also forced due to Elvis' popularity to invite him to his show when Elvis returned from his service in the army and they even sang together th-cam.com/video/BneQYMRhBjQ/w-d-xo.html. Also check out th-cam.com/video/mbXCfpYZwIk/w-d-xo.html ), Elton John affected by seeing him & Jimmy Hendrix drawing Elvis when he was12-year-old after seeing him in concert eth and so many more artist still get inspiration of him. Because RCA records bought Elvis contract from Sun records (Elvis first record company) the owner Sam Fphilips, was having enough money to make records for Carl Perkings(blue sued shoes) and Jonny Cash. Elvis movie biography, gives a lot of information about his live at that era but still is amazing the impact Elvis has even today to so many people and how many joy brought to this world.

It’s amazing that this was not overdubbed for the video like they do for many artists, this sounds almost exactly identical to the record, even the background singers killed it

The censors wouldn’t let them film his body ( he drove the girls wild by moving) they told him not to dance . Ed Sullivan stood up for him and had him on tv, but there was lots of pressure not to let him on tv

He didn't wear eye make-up back then. He later started to wear eyeliner for movies and performances, as was suggested to him to highlight his blue eyes. If you look at early, even childhood photos of him, you'll see that he had natural shadowing behind his eyes as did his mother.

That was when there had been such an uproar about his stage movements that they only had the camera on his upper body, he was also staying uncharacteristically still right up till the very end. Earlier film footage is a lot more lively.

His performance of Hound Dog on the Milton Berle show in June of 1956 is the one that upset them to the point they banned his hips from television! Milton didn't seem the least bit disturbed, he appreciated the humor and talent that was 'Elvis'!❤

The pity of it all is that I don't believe Elvis appreciated how important he was to popular music. Without him we likely wouldn't have had the Beatles...and many others whom he influenced! And sadly, in the end, he was surrounded by sycophants who indulged his every whim...which ultimately led to his untimely death.
