I had small hive beetles one year. I caught it early and removed the affected frames of pollen and honey, plastic bagged them so as not to make a sticky mess in the freezer, and froze them for 24 hours before returning the frames to the hive. The SHB eggs and larvae died and the bees repaired the frames. I also treated the surrounding SOIL with a permethrin drench. The adults hung around inside the hives for the rest of the season, but they have not been back for 4 years. I have no experience with moth infestation but this procedure might be effective on them too. Killing eggs and larvae is the goal

Yeah, I've frozen boxes with wax moths and wax moth larvae in them before with success. I haven't done that in a long time, but it does work.

Hi Bret = Enoz Moth Ice Crystals Moth Killer for Clothes Moths & Carpet Beetles Resealable 16 Oz = Walmart $4.36 each - I used them over the winter, I sprinkled some in a paper towel and left it on top of frames in a hive body then I rapped it in plastic. When you're ready to use just air the frames out for a few days to a week before you need them.

I saw a video where a mama bear and 3 cubs came back to a bee yard they had been in before. The mama bear touched the newly installed electric fence and she jumped out of her skin almost and ran like nuts. In the frenzy one of the cubs ran through the fence and got shocked also and ran away with mama bear. They said the bears never came back. You're right you don't want to waste your money on a cheap small electric fencer. If I were in your shoes I would investigate good electric fencers. Bears roam over huge areas and can smell food 5-10 miles away.

For our home base bear issue, the DNR is coming out tomorrow to set up a trap for the bear, and after he's moved (and after I move all of the hives out of this yard), I'm going to set up an electric fence to Randy Oliver's specs. Then, after I have the yard reconfigured inside an electric fence, I'll move the breeders back here.
I have a couple of other semi permanent yards that I am going to do the same electric fencing to, that haven't been affected yet.

@@BKBees Good plan, I've seen the pic of Micheal Palmer's hives after a bear and it was devastating.

I find “lead poisoning “ is very effective in dealing with the smaller furry robbers.

Hi, I have heard the you can treat to prevent wax moths. I am trying it on a few boxes this, year. Normally I use Para-Moth. Also: the Asian Hornet has been found in BC and western Washington State. This hornet cam be a big problem of it gets established as it preys on bees. Stu

I've not heard anything about preventative wax moth treatments, can you fill me in on what that entails?
Yeah the Asian Hornet and the Tropilaelaps mite are some threats that I could have included in this crash course, but decided not to for brevity's sake. Lets just hope I am not forced to include either of those in a future crash course, as they could be real problems for us.

B&K Bees Hi, historically I have preserved my comb by putting ParaMoth in the stored stacks and taping them up to,slow the leaking of the gas out of the stack. I am familiar with the use of the bacterial, agent BT to treat Gypsy moth infestations back east. I read about using it prophylactically in stored comb to kill wax moth larvae.mThere was very little information in what Imread, somI am skeptical. Since BT is inexpensive and non toxic, I am experimenting with spraying it in a single box of comb, separated from the rest,of my stores, to see what happens.

What about fire ants? I have them by the thousands I just can't seem to get ride of them they just move

I don't concern myself with ants at all. If there were thousands of fire ants I'd probably be concerned for myself, my ankles and my hands, but I wouldn't be too concerned for the bees as long as they looked decent.
Just knock those ants off though, is my advice.
