    Just curious of two things: 1). Can it be safely added to a pond with gold fish in the pond? 2). Can it be added to a spring/pond for portable drinking water? TYIA Thanks for making the video, very informative!

    you can buy huge bags of this very cheaply! for like gardening i believe or water softening something odd like that well copper sufuric acid and hydrogen peroxide plus any side reaction occuring from whatever your adding it to but yeah basically just copper. how are you making crystal like that and so much? Super saturated damn im impressed!

    Thanks for the info! Got a black mold issue under main deck and have had to use bleach in the past to get it off. I'll give this a go and see how well it works for me. Hopefully if it removes it as easy as it looks I'll just reapply every year to keep it mold free.

    • @Fohmer
      @Fohmer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Shane thanks for checking out the video. Keep in mind that copper sulfate is an algaecide, a really potent algaecide. Its not going to clean anything, but it will prevent things from growing. Under a deck it would last a long long time. Better you clean it first with the bleach solution, then apply the copper sulfate to keep it from coming back.

    When you say to mix 8oz or 16 oz of copper sulfate to so much water, do you mean 16 oz of the crystals or of the gallon of water with 2 1/2 C o so it would further dilute the solution?

    • @leonhe713
      @leonhe713 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fohmer might need to learn how to provide proper instruction, I still don't get it.
      the ratio

    • @dewboy910
      @dewboy910 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@leonhe713 I think you might need to learn how to pay attention. He did give proper instruction. He was clearly talking about the 20% solution. You just didn't pay attention. As long as you have crystals in the bottom of the jug of Copper Sulfate and water, it will be close to a 20% solution (saturation). Then mix 8 oz of this 20% solution per gallon of water and apply with a sprayer. Why would he be talking about adding the crystals directly to your sprayer? That would stupid.

    • @dewboy910
      @dewboy910 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just watch the video again and this time, pay attention. 8 oz of the 20% solution per every gallon of water in your sprayer.

    • @rbbartho1
      @rbbartho1 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I believe he means the copper sulfate solution that he made from the copper sulfate crystals and water, not the crystals themselves.

    • @rbbartho1
      @rbbartho1 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I believe that he meant, after you make the strong 20% solution with the crystals in a gallon of water, you have a concentrated solution to dilute with different amounts of water to get the ratios needed for different applications. So, for sidewalks/patios, you mix that one gallon of concentrated solution with 10 gallons of water.

    Great video, I wish all utubers were as precise as you, no wasted time and to the point.
    Question: Can you use Copper sulfate in POWDER FORM to do the same roof cleaning and are the measurements the same. Thanks!

    • @Fohmer
      @Fohmer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not recommend using the powder as its hard to handle. If you do be very careful and wear goggles cause if it gets in your eyes it can do serious damage. I broadcast the copper sulfate crystals in my pond to eliminate algae and that works very well. I tried the powder once and it really gets airborne quickly. I use the powder to mix copper sulfate liquid cause it mixes real fast but I made the video with crystals cause most folks cant buy the powder and crystals are available most anywhere.The mix ratio would not be the same if broadcasting powder and I have no idea what it would be.Copper sulfate will kill algae and lichens at 1 ppm concentration. The concentration I recommend which is 16 ounces per gallon when foaming it on and 4 ounces per gallon when putting it on straight as a liquid ends up at a final concentration of around 7,000 ppm. Also keep in mind copper sulfate is not a cleaner, its an algaecide. A very potent algaecide. What you are really doing when you apply copper sulfate is giving your roof a topical copper treatment. When the liquid or foam dries the copper crystals will still be there and will attach to the ballast rock of the shingle. This will stick around for a year or longer. Every time it rains and the morning dew will activate the copper and prevent anything from growing.Copper sulfate is nothing more than copper. If you were to buy a new shingle roof and you didn't want it to stain you can buy shingles impregnated with copper dust at the factory. These will be guaranteed not to stain for ten years.

    • @ricardo0349
      @ricardo0349 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      How about liquid pool algaecide, I never had algae in my pool when I used it, just wondering if it would do the same for roof cleaning or just to keep it at bay. I used almost 6 oz to 2500 gallons of pool water and it's always clear, I do this twice in the summer. Good idea to try it?
      I also came across some other info from Utube: you can put a 4" strip of copper or galvanized metal at the ridge of the roof, 2" of it tucked under the shingle exposing 2" of it . . . . so when it rains the metal releases a poisonous substance that kills the algae and keeps it off.
      OK, this is what happened . . . I purchased the copper sulfate in powder form online by mistake and wanted to make good on using it. I put 2 cups in a gallon container and yes it dissolved instantly, but it's a very dark blue. I am hoping It won't stain the roof shingles . . . I was thinking of turning the one gallon into 4 gallons to be on the safe side. What are your thoughts?

    • @Fohmer
      @Fohmer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ric, That pool algaecide is nothing more than 11% copper sulfate. It will say that on the back of the container. Don't use that on your roof though because besides being just diluted copper sulfate it also has an aqua shade dye in it. The funny thing about that stuff is that its about 25 cents worth of copper sulfate in a quart container that they sell for 15 to 20 bucks. What they look for is to get between .5 and 1 ppm copper sulfate content in your pool. That will keep the algae at bay! The poisonous substance that copper strips or galvanized strips applied at your roof peak release is nothing more than the copper or zinc that's in them. You can see the effects of this if you look at a stained roof that has a stack vent pipe with a galvanized steel flashing on it. You will see that below the stack vent flashing there will be no stain on what otherwise is a completely stained roof. This works so so depending on the height of your roof. Works well at the top where the strip is at but as you go further away it works less and less.Copper sulfate is not a stain or dye, it turns blue when it contacts water. Dark blue is what it looks like when it is saturated in water. Keep in mind that you will NOT be putting that on your roof straight! You will mix that stuff 4 ounces per gallon of water so the stuff you put on your roof will be a lighter blue. If your roof is white, you might notice a bit of blue tint when you are done but it will go away. If it is not white you wont notice anything. If you get the copper sulfate on painted wood it might look a little blue at first but again it will wash away after a rain or two. If you have aluminum or vinyl trim if wont affect it at all.To be sure you have the copper sulfate liquid that you made saturated, you might want to put another cup of powder into your solution. Its always best to have enough in there so that there is powder or crystals on the bottom of the jug. That way you know the liquid is saturated.

    • @ricardo0349
      @ricardo0349 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just as I had thought, it helps to hear it from you to confirm the application process. By the way I did buy the Fohmer kit. I used your method to clean the siding on the back of my house. However, it wasn't as easy as your video because I had to deal with a 3 story height and needed to be brushed . . . but, came out clean as new!
      Thanks, your very informative, I'm a fan . . . .

    This is great! When I looked on the internet, I find CS in different forms such as fine, small, mini. Does the size of the crystal you buy change the proportions shown in your video? And which do you recommend? At this strength, which you say is greater than Wet & Forget, will it have any detrimental effects to your surfaces such as coated brick or flagstone patio brick? I am spraying a firepit patio and stone wall which has a landscaped bed behind it and a metal liner in the firepit. Would the plants, bushes, flagstone and metal liner be harmed? Will it also clean dirt and grime? I have been battling fungus in our landscape, you name it, I have it…I was told to spray my lilacs in the spring with a copper spray … can I use this and if so, what would be the mixture for these? …see I told you I had a lot of questions :)

    So I Made a batch of copper sulfate and applied in onto Areas where there were Black Mold. Pavements, under steps... I have to say that I did not expect the instant bleaching effect, (Turning Clear) from the copper sulfate, but after 1 week there was no apparent effect on the mold... NOTHING..If you are Cleaning, this will not BLEACH out the mold... Im actually not sure if it would do anything.

    In the area that I live in many of the trees have Spanish moss. I did some research and they say copper sulfate is the preferred method for treating/spraying the trees
    My question is does your tank system allow spraying of trees that are high? If so how far can it reach? And how strong a compressor do you need to hook up to one of those Fohmer tanks?

      Apple trees need a very low dosage of Bordaux Mixture 0,5% is maximum to use. Spray at the End of the Winter before buds opening.
      Googel ^^Bordaux solution^^ on youtube to find the way you can make ist. But dont make ist stronger than 0,4% - 0,5%.

    HELP
    I purchased 10 lbs of copper sulfate granules from Ebay. Now I am have doubts about it being real since it is not working very well to kill roof moss or algae on sidewalks. I mix it, as Mike suggested, by pouring a bunch of granules in a jug and filling the rest with water, and let it sit overnight to dissolve. There is plenty of copper sulfate on the bottom of the jug in the morning, so I know that the water absorbed to 20%. I then mix 1 gallon of that solution at about 5 parts water. I spray it on and let it sit but it doesn't kill the algae or moss. Has anyone had concerns about it being fake? How can I test it to see if it is genuine?
    I realize Mike's solution kills only, which is ok as time and rain should wash away the algae. I've also used Wet & Forget and it works well, but Mike claims that his solution is the same.
    BTW,
    I've used "30 Seconds", and it works very well. It kills and cleans like magic. Does anyone have the recipe for "30 Seconds"?

    • @Fohmer
      @Fohmer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Bob, For moss try Bordeaux mix. Just search that at Google to see how to make it from copper sulfate liquid. Copper sulfate alone is not as effective on moss because moss is a rooted plant. I believe with the Bordeaux mix you just add some lime to the copper sulfate. Oh and 30 second cleaner is 6% sodium hypohlorite (bleach) with some surfactant in it, for same results get a gallon of Clorox concentrated outdoor bleach (its 12.5% sodium hypochlorite) and mix it with a gallon of water for 2 gallons of 30 second cleaner at half the price. While I present the recipe for making liquid copper sulfate, I can not claim that it is mine, people been using it as an algaecide for 50 years or more. Thanks for stopping by!

    When you say 8 ounces (1/2 lb) per gallon of water, is that 8 ounces of the crystal, or 8 FUILD ounces of your 20% mix?

    • @Fohmer
      @Fohmer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, to make liquid copper sulfate you need to dissolve the crystals in water, to make sure it's 20% and saturated you need to put 2 pounds of crystals in a gallon jug and fill with water, let that set for a day and if there are crystals in the bottom then you can be sure the liquid in there is saturated at 20%.

    • @pr0230m
      @pr0230m 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand how you make YOUR gallon jug of 20% dissolved crystals... But LATER in your video when you are spraying a wall, your video states 8 oz (1/2 lb) of CUSo4 into one gallon... IS that weight or liquid ounces of your 20% pre made.

    • @Fohmer

      Marie Mccormick that'll probably be too much - I would put a few ounces. Considering your comment is 12 months old

    Does it kill moss & lichen?

    • @Fohmer
      @Fohmer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it will kill both of these. There are better solutions to kill moss that is rooted in the grass in the yard though.

      I just bought a 10 lb. bag on Amazon for roughly $3 per pound, you can find it at a hardware store in a 2 lb container under a name brand but it will cost basically $6.50 per pound.

      Ebay..10 lbs for about $35, including free shipping. Make sure you get the crystals, not powder, or it will clog your sprayer.

    It will kill plants if you saturate the roots.

    I think your title is misleading, as you are not "making copper sulfate", you are simply dissolving copper sulfate crystals. "Making copper sulfate" would be turning something else into copper sulfate. For example, you can make copper sulfate from sulfuric acid. Or you can make sulfuric acid out of copper sulfate, like in my video: th-cam.com/video/fi31hoGdqts/w-d-xo.html

    You didn't MAKE copper sulfate. You dissolved copper sulfate into some water . Your a kimest huh ?

    shingles are a piece of shit, no 1 should ever have a shingled roof. its anathema . it attracts all kinds of mold and fungus. Metal roof with ceramic white coating is best.
