  • Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Sci-Fi Action classic Total Recall by discussing its characters, the exposition, and dreams to try and figure out whether or not our hero is dreaming. Total Recall is one of my favorite sci-fi action movies. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Michael Ironside, Sharon Stone, and Ronny Cox.

    The short story that inspired the movie explicitly asserts that it’s all real. But Paul Verhoeven chose to produce a postmodern effort that allows the viewer to have it BOTH ways. In that regard, it’s a bit of an innovative breakthrough!

      There is enough textual evidence and red herrings to believe both options, but it all being a dream is the simple answer, believing it was all real is more interesting for me. When Arnold freaks out at Recall and yells "you blew my cover," it's because he went back to being Houser, not because he was playing out his fantasy, because as they said they haven't implanted it yet.

    Knowing how Paul Verhoeven works, I'm sure there's a meaning to Quade's suit being #8 and Melina's being #2 in the opening Mars sequence.

    You know, a case for it being real, and what truly sold me on it, even before the sweat scene is that Lori tries repeteadly to take Quaid's mind off Mars, before he even knows about Rekkall, which would make sense if the rest of the movie DID happen. Also, it never made sense that the doctor couldn't simply come back after shot, and if HE couldn't why just not send any other staff?
    After all, it's just memory implants.
    Anyways, good video

    • @TheSocratesofAthens
      @TheSocratesofAthens ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, why would he have to come back to reality through such ambiguous means? Why would Recall have implants that so thoroughly blur the distinction between reality and the fabricated experience? No wonder people had psychosis. It would make more sense to have the experience as a kind of lucid dream rather than a mind-bending experience that would lead the client to deny reality. That way, the client has had a wonderful experience that can help him appreciate his own life, much akin to watching a very life-like film rather than essentially a psychosis-inducing experience that breaks his connection with the real world.

    For an Arnie gun-ho action film, I think it’s probably his most metaphorical in that it uses the typical tropes of action films of the time (strong and bulked Everyman hero, killing the bad guys, getting the girl and saving the planet) but twists it in a way by suggesting it’s a part of the Rekall memory package and not actually real, sort of taking a dig at the genre.
    Personally I think it was the memory package gone wrong with Quaid suffering from the schizoid embolism and having the plug pulled and being lobotomised at the end, but again it can go either way.
    It’s timeless in the fact people still debate whether it was “reality” or not over 30 years later.

      In terms of similar films, I presume you’ve seen The Matrix and Inception, but if you haven’t you should analyse those movies about the concept of “dreams vs reality”. 😊

    My favorite film of all time. I love how Quad isn't important and the script is simple and fun. How the minor characters are more interesting then the main character. He is swept into new locations constantly meeting new characters that are always appealing. Quads only important at the end of the film.

    • @KyleGauntReviews
      @KyleGauntReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He has both passive and active characteristics, which I've always enjoyed. Like you said, the idea of going from location to location with a surplus of money and meeting new people constantly is the perfect way to keep the story engaging. Quaid is like a jacked up version of James Bond in a sense. Thank you for watching

    Only one person is very agressive (over-reacting) for quaid is Richter (personal revenge as competitor). All the others key characters are just pawns for the plot of the story without real personality like dream. Richter lives on mars and is supposed to be married to laurie who was in charge to live with quaid as husband and wive on the earth!! it makes no sense. Romance between Richter and laurie or NOT, it doesn't affect the plot the story. An explanation? I like to imagine that richter was ex boyfriend/ex husband of laurie, this is why quaid makes dream about him. just a personal theory. The fact that it is not explained in the movie makes Richter real but he is not!.All the others key characters are presented in the real life of quaid before recall office scene, except richter. if richter was presented in the real life of quaid like all the others, the audiance recognized the quaid's dream in the movie immediately!

    It was based on book 📖 called we can remember it for you wholesale. On the book it was real and the the memories recall going to plant on him also really happened. In the movie they need to make changes. Let the viewers decide what really happened? Was he dreaming or was it real?

  • @angelareele858

    It's similar to the film adaptation of the Brett Ellis book **American psycho**.......the director(mary harron) said it was meant to be real,but watching, you question it ,as it submerges into absurdity....**the last action hero** played with the same idea comedically........the cartoonist pastel coloured mars colony ,did look dream like,but it's a sort of homage to the action-drama-genre- type, violence and set design.

    • @KyleGauntReviews

      Interesting angle, I never thought of that. The older I get and the more I get into filmmaking, the more I realize how similar stories can be but good directorial flair and great performances can make them feel like their own. I used to debate it back and forth without a real conclusion.
    But for me its summed up with Melina's image at Recall. The only way they would have her image is if its a dream.
    But he dreamed about her before he went to Recall. The only way thats possible is if its real, and he is getting glimpes of his erased memory.
    I think they intentionally made it impossible to come to a rational conclusion, so thats my opinion. There is conflicting evidence that makes both options impossible.
    Plus the premise of the ego trip is nonsensical. If the implanted memories are "as real as any memory in your head," having 2 weeks of your life where you think you were a sports hero might cause some Schizophrenia.
    Coming home from vacation to your loving wife, after killing her a few days ago... might cause some lasting trauma.
    Its an amazing movie that Ive seen dozens of times over the last 30 years, but it doesnt warrant this kind of deep thought.
