  • Today is probably the most railtour - concentrated day I think I've ever done (railtour count: 5). First up was taking the 2V06 to Jewellery Quarter, for 7029 Clun Castle on the outward 'Lickey Incline' train. My service overtook Clun at both Small Heath South and Snow Hill, but the shots I could gather on the train weren't really worth showing here. Then Clun came storming through a few minutes early.
After this, I took the delayed 2S16 to Birmingham Moor Street, before changing to Birmingham New Street and catching the 09:49 1M92 service to Nottingham, and getting off at Tamworth. Then, it was to see the the Black Five 44871 come rocketing through on time. Unfortunately for me, a pair of 57s passed through the high level platforms just seconds prior to the five's passing, meaning that a horde of diesel fans came marauding down the steps and set up quickly on my platform with little consideration of who was there first. Afterwards I spotted that a 67 was due on another railtour from Eastleigh to Leeds, and since I had time to feature this, I did. Then, my train back to New Street was an XC HST, so I very much enjoyed my ride back to Brum.
Following a quick crossover from Platform 12 (where I arrived) to Platform 11, where my connection to Barnt Green was waiting, I arrived in Barnt Green at 11:45, and was gobsmacked by the sheer volume of people there, although I did suspect something of the sort would happen. Looking at RTT, I chose platform 1, and this turned out to be a very wise decision.
Continuing my usual tradition on these trips, I visited Peter's Pan Fish & Chip shop and then walked to Vigo for 6233 Duchess of Sutherland's runs. There I initially set up at the bridge but moved, looking at the lighting. After, I returned to the bridge and waited for 6233's return, which although impressive, was overshadowed, by all reports, by 7029's run up earlier. During the wait, a Windhoff RHTT train got stuck on the bank a little further up from us, and we had a good joke about that, plenty of banking suggestions like 6233 or the class 20 lol.
Afterwards, I walked back to Barnt Green (accompanied by Luke @ Black Country Steam Videos and two others), and returned home.
Thanks again to all involved, also to the train drivers and signallers for putting up with our antics lol, and thanks to everyone at Vigo for the chat and for the lights being set up so we could see 6233 better lol. Enjoy!
    Timestamps:
    00:00 7029, Jewellery Quarter
    01:00 44871, Tamworth
    01:41 7029, Barnt Green
02:08 6233, Vigo (shot of the day)
02:41 6233, Vigo Bridge, crank up the volume

Fruitful busy day. Great viewing. Love the shot in the dark, lol. Actually it was good, waiting for a glimpse of something, an exploding view, and gone in a flash, brilliant. Thanks for your efforts, and for sharing!

Thank you very much, yes the dark shot was nice although it would have been nice if I'd been able to see 7029 go up the bank as well rather than having to stick with Barnt Green. However, that did allow me to see 44871 so I mustn't complain lol. Regards, Dan

All great shots but that moody, autumn colours shot with the super-glossy red Duchess was really evocative.

Excellent stuff Dan, a very busy and productive day out and so glad you got it right at Barnt Green...... what a crowd. Great shot of 44871 too, she was on a roll!! Regards, Brian.

Thank you very much, yes it was very action packed and very enjoyable. When I looked at the timings I wasn't going to push my luck at Barnt Green and I was right to do so lol. Yes, 44871 was really going some, both in your shot and mine! Looks like she and her crew were just enjoying cruising along the WCML in the low sixties. Regards, Dan

Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed. It's a shame I wasn't able to film more of the Black 5 on this occasion actually, but the Lickey Incline trains took precedent in the end lol. Hope all is well in Australia! Regards, Dan

The pan on the duchess going down is fucking beautiful and the sound of the castle just made the day special by itself and I wonder if the leaf blower earlier could park there but anyways mate was an enjoyable day hope to see you around soon dan👍😁

Hahaha thank you very much for the praise, and the leafblower was definitely breaking some rules, although I'm still of the opinion that they should have got the 20 to bank it lol. Very enjoyable day indeed, see you around, thanks, Dan

Ooops, annoyed photters chose the wrong platform at Barnt Green! Shame the Castle had such a featherweight load. Black 5 was by far the best performer of the day. Great video.

Glad you enjoyed, and yes the entire of Platform 2 were bowled. I was nearly with them but chose against it seeing how close a Hereford train was due lol. Yes the Black 5 was really tanking it along through Tamworth, well worth the trip up from New Street to see. Regards, Dan

Dan, We shared the same railtours but at different times of the day. I couldn't help noticing that clown at Barnt Green holding a camera over the edge of the platform as the train passed. These idiots just give us responsible enthusiasts a bad name. That aside your video was very good. Regards, John

Yes I did notice that 'plank' as I like to call them. I do believe he was a member of the public, ardent for some shot 10 centimetres from No. 7029's cylinders, and unfortunately these people are indeed idolised by NR and others as an excuse to make it harder for the many to enjoy responsibly. Glad you enjoyed however, Dan

To think, as a child, I saw Duchesses and Black Fives every day at Colwich...... where have the years gone? Er, what was that poppy-coloured excrescence at Barnt Green doing in the film?

    • @crunchynutsteamfilms5043
      @crunchynutsteamfilms5043  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, a strange thought indeed, at least they're still doing what they were meant for lol. My grandmother tells a good story about putting pennies on the line at Tamworth with my great uncle, and watching them get run over by Duchesses, Black Fives and the like... would have loved to have seen such times. Nothing could be done at Barnt Green, much as I would have liked to edit it out lol. Regards, Dan

@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043 My late father was relief boxman at Elmhurst Crossing between Lichfield and Polesworth, being one of the regular signalmen at Colwich Junction in the 40's, 50's and early 60's. They were great days to be growing up beside the Trent Valley Main Line - everything from Super D's and 4F's, coming down off Cannock Chase with the coal drags, to Duchesses, the LMS Diesel Twins and the prototypes of both the Deltic and Kestrel. Dad remembered seeing the first shakedown run of the streamlined 'Coronation' and it's train - not the inaugural one when they took the crossover at Crewe too fast, but the preceding one. The train came down from Rugeley 'wrong line' due to track work, and reversed onto the correct road opposite the box where, at the time, he was the booking lad. He never forgot how impressive that huge, blue and silver engine was, and the incredible, effortless ease with which she set back and moved several hundred tons without a sound.

@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043 The Deltic was a quite incredible sight - I'd seen the new Kitmaster model in a Rugeley shop window, but not for real. Then one summer afternoon I happened to be up on the batters behind my grandfather's LNWR cottage, and it came through on an up express. Immaculate livery, shiny blue, silver grey and yellow, she really stood out against the grimier steam engines. Kestrel, 'copped' a while later, was heading north, wearing a livery best described as yellow ochre and chocolate. Only saw either of them just the once, but never to be forgotten. A few years earlier - I'd have been about six - a Princess came through on a down parcels, still bearing the old experimental blue livery.

Yes, I was very much expecting people to start talking the moment it'd passed, but I think everyone there was really determined to hear the locomotive - it was very late and very cold lol! Regards, Dan
