Re., splitting humbuckers. Another option is the SD Triple Shot pickup rings. I did this on an LP with two push/pulls and with the TS rings you can switch each pickup as series or parallel OR coil split either the slug or screw coil. Then the two push/pulls were wired for when both pickups were selected as either series/parallel or in/out of phase. AFAIK both rings are under $50. That fender finding NOS paint analogy happened in the cycling world, an Italian frame maker found an old box of lugs from the 70s, enough to make 100 frames, they re-popped a 70s "screwed and glued" frame with polished lugs and painted tubing and those frames sold for ridiculous amounts of money, kinda like if you own an 80s GT bmx bike, that's the equivalent of owning an actual gibson burst.

I've stopped into a local Guitar Center about 4 - 5 times a year and noticed they have an inordinate amount of guitars new guitars with scratches and gouges hanging on the walls. Many of them have fret spout problems. I can randomly pick out 6 or more guitars and all of them will have something wrong with them. They don't have anybody changing the strings, doing setups or just tuning them. They use to have a repair tech that took care of that, but he left because they didn't want to pay him for doing all the extra work besides his tech position duties. Now he has his own business doing repairs and setups. The good thing about this situation is he lives only 2 blocks from me so if I need any work done on any of my guitars he well walking distance. I don't have to drive a half hour though traffic to GC.
I saw a Mexican Strat with terrible fret sprouts. I would have asked for a discount since the manager knew it was bad. On the positive side, the neck was excellent and everything else. It would been a great fixer upper guitar if I was in the market to buy another Strat
@@sgt.gruhnnno, they’re not. If you’re lucky, they may have the same model and color in the back, but the ones on the wall are to be sold, as “new” condition. Sam ash does this as well, so idk where you’re shopping
It’s the same at my gc. Anything over $1000 is almost always hung high out of reach and is usually locked to persuade the timid customer from having to ask to try, which I can understand because of all the issues you mentioned. It is sad though, loose jacks and pots, missing toggle switches on sooo many guitars, broken strings, always out of tune, and a lot of gnarly dings dents and scratches on what is labeled as “new”. There was a cool tech at mine, but haven’t seen him in almost a year so I’m assuming he moved on like yours did.
I LOOOOVE guitars with a single humbucker in the bridge! It's like a dedicated rock machine that does one thing, but extremely well. It also just looks badass, and I like the simple controls. My Kramer SM-1 H has 1 push/pull knob. That's it! It's not like I get confused with two or three knobs; but I like simplicity. I also prefer a 3-way toggle to a 5-way blade switch. It looks better.
Hey Phil, Fender has started using UV coatings for (some/all) guitars made in Corona. I don’t know exactly what guitars or parts of guitars they are using these coatings for (I can find out), but they appear to be in the process of ultimately changing over all of their lines (at least in Corona) to UV. Also, Fender initially moved away from nitro in Southern California in the late 80’s, early 90s due to air quality regulations. You may have heard… our smog was really bad then! (It’s better now, but still not great). When I was on the Variance Hearing Board back then, I remember Fender coming in to ask for a limited temporary variance from the regulations as they tried to develop coatings that would meet air quality requirements. Separately… I love Knaggs guitars, and first saw/heard them when I saw Dougie Rappaport playing one with Edgar Winter. The sound was incredible. I got to briefly play one at the next NAMM. I generally prefer the looks of their wood grain ones, but I thought your choices in modifying the looks were really good. And yes, it very much reminds of my old classmate’s ‘57 Chevy! Nice job!
I made a video that guitar center sucks. Butit aint Guitar Center, its their suppliers. Thank you. I like the people who work at Guitar Center. But I bought a Les Paul Custom electric guitar by Epiphone. I also bought a two year service warranty. A month later, I grabbed my guitar by the strap (and I just watched a TH-cam video warning people not to do that because your guitar can fall off the strap and get damaged) and it came off and the heat stock cracked. The guitar was ruined. I took it back and Guitar Center took it back and gave me a new one. The problem was the guitar wasnt new. It was a refurbished by Epiphone. It had a worn fret board. Im bummed. I got mad at Guitar Center, but you made me realize it was Epiphone. The guitar was package from the factory. I guess i have to make a video defending GC! Thanks for this video.
Hey, Phil. I remembered you telling the story about the "new" amp you got from Guitar Center when I ordered a Marshall DSL40 a few weeks ago from them. I asked not to be sent a floor model so my gear adviser (lol) had it sent from the warehouse, showed up brand-spanking new.
That Knagg guitar is gorgeous, yeah '57 Chevy is right! The cosmetic changes you made, the knobs, pickup rings, selector switch tip, are right on. The knobs especially look amazing, and what a find! I'd have thought Knagg sourced them specifically for that guitar finish. Maybe their reaction's gonna be, "Why didn't think of that?"
The older I get the more I know what I like and the less gear I have. Dead weight overboard. The great part of doing that is I was able to buy a really great guitar and amp in place of gear I wasn't even using. Top notch gear is much more inspiring than a bunch of mediocre crap.
it took me three tries to get a somewhat playable les paul from guitar center and I still had to send it to Gibson for repairs under warranty within a month of having it. Two side notes: When I had to return the second Les Paul the person I spoke to on the phone told me I had to pay to ship it back to them (this was a few days after I received it damaged). When I told him it was damaged and that I had already alerted my customer service rep that it was damaged and he said okay then you don't have to pay for shipping. So, if you buy something from them and just want to return it because you don't like it or have buyer's remorse you have to pay to ship it back. Gibson also tried to charge me shipping to ship it to them under warranty. I had to argue to get them to cover it.
I love sitting with a 'How to play' (music notation) guitar book on a music stand figuring out what I'm supposed to do. It just makes me feel good. Started learning to play during Lockdown. Life is good.
Talking for an hour plus straight would take a lot out of you. Sometimes I dont know how you do it Phil. I agree with your stance on toxic forum and generally not getting too wrapped up in that. Peoples opinions are often highly subjective, flaky and steeped in arrogance anyway (Im guilty too sometimes). Be wary of people whos minds are full, the Dalai Lama speaks of this.
The HW1 Strat was my first guitar! I still have it and love it. Only mod was to put Bill Lawrence Keystone pickups in it. HW1 also has the 'greasebucket' circuit.
I have a 2000 MIM Nashville Tele and it’s one of the best guitar I own, including all of my expensive US made Teles and Strats. I put SD 5-2 pickup in the bridge and the guitar screams. I still use that guitar at every gig.
? Phil, I bought a PedalPal Fx Pal 800-V4 Gold Overdrive Pedal. Had trouble with it. I emailed customer service. Within 10 mins, I got a response. Found out it was my power supply. Great pedal, awesome Customer Service.
Thanks Phil, you're videos are always reality. The thing about Guitar Center tho is they have floor models, with a small stock of guitars in boxes of their non used models with normal run rates. If you play one of their instruments, and request a boxed one, they will give it to you. if they don't have it on hand, then they will simply order it for your home delivery. Sweetwater is the same with their demo units. Small music stores, or business for that matter are always important....but if you read about Guitar Center (Musicians Friend), Sweetwater, AMS, they all started as small shops. it's the typical business model if you do things right, the cream rises to the top and franchises are created, where as those who like to poo poo and remain small are just making excuses.
My Bass Amp of Choice is a Mark Bass CMD 102P with 500 watts in a kick back configuration with 2 x 10" long-throw, neodynium speakers and a Piezo Tweeter in a bass reflex cab. It is not cheap, I have one of the original, Italian made amps. I have been told (by my colleagues that i have allowed to use it) that it blows away any Ampeg, Fender, Genz-Benz, or GK amp (new or vintage). Moreover, it is relatively lightweight and compact. It was an $1100, purchase some 20 years ago and it is still $1100. I will never sell it.
The single pickup preference can also be compared to the preference for the single volume and tone on a guitar with multiple pickups. That is MY choice whenever possible. Dual volume and tone are useful for recording/fine tuning the output/tone, but for playing live (especially if ur the singer) the simpler the better in the knob & switch dept.
I totally agree with the $40k guitar. I love the Jem and Pia, but I cannot justify the price for either. I have a RG655 which I love, and paid $800 for it. I doubt I would be any happier with the guitars that are 10x the price.
I learned how to play on my dads 67 trini Lopez and the first one I got myself was a epiphone dot and I have been a fan of them my whole life. I have acquired an American Strat and Telly but I still prefer the LP and the 335.
I bought one used in December from GC for a grand. It looks to be an open box at worst, came in original box with original packaging. Great amp. I call it my forever amp as I don't need anything else and I'll probably never get rid of it. Highly recommended.
Talking about over overhandling of guitars at the store. A couple of times I found a guitar at my local mom and pop store on their website. When I went to check it out the guitar was in storage in the back.
.....in response to the "What's better, the Highway 1 or Player guitar?" I was touring the factory in Corona a few years back and while standing in front of the Pickup testing bench i asked the guy testing them, while observing him throwing the pickups that didn't pass the test into a wooden box, "Are you throwing those away?". The guy doing the setups behind us replied, "NO, in honering Leo's habits, we don't throw anything away, we repurpose them by putting them into the Highway 1 guitars".........
I bought 2 fsr squier broncos...a purple directly from fender, and a california blue from guitar center...the purple was usable right out the box, the blue was rough and needed the neck sanded and the nut slots were cut too low
Just for the record, the lowest price level of an American made Fender is called the "Performer". I have a Strat and comes with a push pull pot and a grease bucket circuit and I think it is great after two years of ownership!
My rule with Guitar center is get one from the back thats new in the box if you have it, or order one and have it shipped to my house. The exception would be that I found something exceptional. One must override the “want it right now” mentality
I was recommended Music Nomad's F-one to clean the fretboard of my Les Paul Standard 60's and my SG Standard. Is this a good recommendation? Will it work safely on my Fender Strat with a maple board?
Got my Martin 000-15M New through Sweetwater and had them install the Fishman Presys and give me very low action setup. It was amazing! Gave them top marks. Then bought a $500 Ukulele that had finish problems and terrible strings (unraveling within 3 weeks). They took it back and I stepped up to a more expensive Uke, but it came with dings. This time I kept the Uke and they gave me a $200 store credit which worked out great. I work with the same guy every time and he helped me a few years ago with a Slash Epiphone LP that had a killer setup without any special request on my side. Overall, I think they got their act together. I'm others may not have had the same luck with them...
6:35 The second generation Highway One that's being referenced here has the Fender Deluxe Drive pickups, which I verified with Fender Customer Service about three years ago when I finally got my SSS Highway One. The Mexican Standards of the referenced era had standard ceramic single coils, not the Alnico Deluxe Drives. Get the Highway One. 😊
Costco is somewhat true (at least in Canada). The Costco receivers are extremely critical of produce that is received and will reject pallets without question if the food is not up to their standards. I worked for a company that supplied Costco fresh vegetables and their products were selected as their own grade.
I will say the one I ordered online from GC was an Epiphone inspired by gibson 335 that I got in a dangelico box and a lot of bubble wrap that sat on a delivery truck in the dead of winter for 2 nights The guitar was an ice cube and the frets were like a saw blade. I bought a fret end file and went to work and it's nice now but there's lots of amateur fretwork marks 😅
Regarding the Endura frets, in the 1980s, when IBM came out with the PC, they sold it with a newly designed keyboard. The position of the control button caused me to rotate my left hand about 15 degrees counter-clockwise so I could press the control button with my little finger. Before long, the IBM design was the industry standard, and a million clones of the keyboard were laid out in the new, non-standard IBM way. My hand hurt for years. It resulted in all the fingers of my left hand having to strain as they reached left unnaturally. Here we are years later, and it has been forty years of pain in my left hand, carpal tunnel, and trigger release (twice each ). Phillip, you are justified in fearing opening yourself to a non-standard fret geometry. Something you depend on every day of your life is that you can switch between different guitars, and the mechanics of string manipulation remain about the same.
I have Bought 2 guitar's from SamAsh and they have went above and beyond what i expected out of them. They reached out after the sale to make sure i was happy and didn't have any issues. my last purchase was a Les Paul 60's model in ice T it arrived flawless. Easily the best guitar guitar out of the box experience i have had. I bought this through their guitars of distinction area from their website which is similar to what Sweetwater offers. I could not be happier. this is my second purchase from them after the new Alex Lifeson model from Epiphone. both arrived in perfect condition and the customer service after the sale was great as well. in both cases i called the customer service rep and received a discount off the MSRP
I threw Freeway 5-Way/10 Position Switches in my Nashville Tele (to get the classic neck/bridge combo) and my SSS Strat because of the versatility. Love the series combos
A lot of guitars at Guitar Center suck because so many people mess with them. People will drop them, smack them into each other, mess up the tension by tuning too high or low, scratch the finish with their belt buckles or other worn items, pop off knobs to steal them, etc. You get all this stuff happening to the guitars and the employees don't do anything about it because they don't even know it happened. Guitar center guitars get all the abuse but none of the needed care or maintenance.
I bought a SE McCarty from them but I wish the guy told me about the Plek option and maybe some advice on better pickups. It would have saved me a lot of hassle.
Phil, ..(you might save this to read, for next time you fly somewhere) 😅 I played only piano for decades. Even though the keyboard that I’ve had for many years has around a thousand sounds in it, I still play the acoustic piano sound on it nearly 75%, electric piano-approximately 20%, and ‘Hammond type sound’ maybe as little as 5%, (depending on whether I’m playing at home, or with others. However, I decided to finally get one of those lowest price of the year electric guitars during the 2020 Black Friday sales, (G.C.) and picked up an Epiphone SG for $170.** + tax. I knew nothing about what I was getting, other than thinking that it was good that it supposedly had a Mahogany body & neck. Anyway, since then, I put a Di Marzio PAF neck pickup on it, a Graphtek nut, Gotoh locking tuners, and a $75.** ‘2 in 1’ Bridge/Saddle, (because it only came with a no adjustable preset thing, which I had no idea what the difference was when I bought it). I mentioned that I prefer to play mostly ‘clean’ piano sound, because with electric guitar, I prefer the opposite, just not too harsh, but as much sustain as possible. Maybe another time, I will comment about the Epiphone LP that I got within the same year, and how I managed to fit a graphtek adjustable nut on it, and why my set of Seymour Duncan pickups are still in their package. Also I got a Hohner smaller scale guitar for lightness & convenience. I would have a Squire Telecaster, but I had to decide whether I wanted to get the best keyboard I could afford, so I put the Telecaster back for now. I’ve definitely learned how many guitar players never stop buying different guitars though. I started this comment just wanting to let you know that, although It sort of slips my mind that your show is on each week,.. (I’ve been subscribed at least a couple of years )…I inevitably see the most recent show pop up when I get on TH-cam and I often decide to watch, usually sooner than later, I am always glad that I did. I always learn something, and appreciate your honesty. Don’t worry about playing, you know a lot more than I do, and probably more than a hundred thousand people who watch. If you don’t already, just decide on what you want to play, and go over it a few times in advance. More importantly, just try to remember what Al Franken’s character, Stuart Smalley used to say to himself for confidence; ‘I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.’ Thanks for all the good info, see you next week.
For what it's worth _ Gibson sponsored a couple of charitible fundraisers recently that were aimed at combating the homelessness epidemic in Los Angeles. That and by all accounts they released their rebooted line of amplifiers at a pretty fair price whilst also introducing the mass market version of the Theodore guitar at just a couple hundred bucks more than the recent Epiphone models that have come out. That's certainly not to say they aren't laser focused on making as much money as possible but I do think the TH-cam echo chamber can get a little hung up on certain brands at times. But that's just the way it seems to me. All the best Cheers
I've stopped buying from Sweetwater after a number of quality control issues with their guitars. Not cheap guitars. Loose parts, bad necks, unplayable setups. In years of ordering from Guitar Center/Musicians Friend zero issues. Chicago Music Exchange once suggested that I cancel an order because they weren't happy with the quality of a last in stock guitar. Sweetwater would have shipped it.
I was just at GC looking for another guitar. Tried many Kramers and Jacksons. All had horrendous Sharp Fret ends and literally unplayable. Same with the Schecters and Fender MIM's. Horrible fret work. The only guitar that was playable of the 12 or so I would consider buying was the Ibanez AZ40. No way I'm paying $300-$700 and the frets are razors. Unacceptable and they shouldnt make it past QC inspection at the factory.
Does Sweetwater get better guitars from their supplers? Probably not, BUT Sweetwater is inspecting all of them and buyers don't generally get crappy ones. While waiting on my fourth Sweetwater guitar to arrive, I stopped in to GC to browse. In the top rows I could see some $1000 guitars with very badly matched 2 piece tops. Sweetwater"s central location, review vs spec and website pictures is a great asset for buyers and I believe suppliers will get negative feedback from Sweetwater for bad quality. It looks like GC lets everthing get through.
Only received 1 damaged guitar (looked like shipping damage) from Guitar Center, and they replaced it right away. Guitar Center has always taken care of any issues. The only crap guitars I received are from online sites. I'll take Guitar Center or any local music store any day!
Sorry I missed the live stream. Someone actually had the temerity to want to be my client and dared to engage me with a distracting work-call! THE NERVE.
Guitar center gives you 10% off for trading in a cheap pedal and sweetwater doesnt. I can drive to guitar center to return it but sweetwater you have to pay and ship it back
When Phillip says, that the "satin nitro" finish, relics' well... does this mean that the finish will 'craze' ? I guess that, exposure, heat and UV light, are all factors, I don't know, but my Epi-LP '59, has a satin, nitro finish - and I would not see it as something bad, if that's what happens to it, over time.
Loss of inspiration? Yes, go watch a band, work on your garden, I lift weights and work on my aquariums and do some gardening. I wish bands would do live TH-cam concerts. Trolling is intense and you just can reply to everyone in the world.

Regarding customer service, I had great luck with Sam Ash. I ordered a bass amp and cabinet via online. The cabinet got lost/stolen and Sam Ash sent another one without😢any hassle. GC has been hit or miss. I think all the locations near me have some great employees and also have some lazy mouth breathers. I have learned when the good dudes are working and pick those days for in store visits. I will also say that while GCs phone folks are ok, Musicians Friend were amazingly good.
Has anybody seen the FB post that has Joe Walsh sitting around a bunch of Gibsons, the add states the store id letting them go for an unheard of price, Les Pauls, Flying V's everything. There's even comments from other customers supposedly that have received their guitars. Fake stuff or real?
More than likely fake. If you dig a little deeper you'll notice most comments are of Indian decent or there abouts. Their FB accounts are fairly new, many of the accounts are friends of each other and then Google map their address and it's usually some store front in California that isn't a guitar store or a warehouse. Shady and a scam. I get these all the time. Don't get taken even if it's for only $50. Plus if you've learned anything about Gibson they're not giving anything away for cheap. As far as Joe walsh, deep fake and if he's talking that's also faked.

There was a cool tech at mine, but haven’t seen him in almost a year so I’m assuming he moved on like yours did.

I wrote the ones on display are manhandled and the boxed ones are not, pretty straightforward comment
Anybody who has watched the Fender factory tour videos know that the only American made Fenders are the Custom Shop guitars.
Excellent work Phillip! Good heart.
it took me three tries to get a somewhat playable les paul from guitar center and I still had to send it to Gibson for repairs under warranty within a month of having it.
Dude! Nice guitar playing at 57:53! Very nice..
Sooo.... what's going on.... not live? Love to all my peeps! "Guitar of the Week" is great - do more!
Agreed, guitar of the week is great
? Phil, I bought a PedalPal Fx Pal 800-V4 Gold Overdrive Pedal. Had trouble with it. I emailed customer service. Within 10 mins, I got a response. Found out it was my power supply. Great pedal, awesome Customer Service.
Good idee the guitar of the week. Like it.
Hello from Belgium.
I wish the Fender guitars had the tremolo that the G&L's do. Gibson is like Harley Davidson. I'm surprised they aren't pushing their merch more.
Showed up late, jumped right to the GoTW timestamp. Every time I see it on the wall I'm impressed. Great demo, thanks Phil!
Hey Phillip, love yr channel! .. just sayin' ! .. I'm gonna to ( try ) to budget in getting a pair of yr P90s. .. will be my first experience w P90s
I like how sweater sells with the photos of the actual guitars, weights stated, and you can compare them…
Sweater? Or sweet water. I know predictive text stinks sometimes.
Sorry about my rant, love watching Phils shows
Love the mods you did with the Knaggs! Looks like it should have come this way!
You know that when you title something "Northen Light" most musicians will think of the weed strain lol. Or is it just me 🤔
Seymour Duncan triple shot pickup ring.. change your pickup to SD p-rail
I want one of those Engelballs!! Great show Phil.
I wonder myself. Didn't see it pop up earlier. Looks like it isn't live. 5pm cst here. Normal time
.....in response to the "What's better, the Highway 1 or Player guitar?" I was touring the factory in Corona a few years back and while standing in front of the Pickup testing bench i asked the guy testing them, while observing him throwing the pickups that didn't pass the test into a wooden box, "Are you throwing those away?".
What does the Grease Bucket circuit do? I've heard mention of it in the past... 🤔
I want that Engl Fireball 25.
Just bought one in December. You won't be disappointed.
I have a first gen Highway One Tele and it is fantastic. I still get surprised by it.
Costco is somewhat true (at least in Canada). The Costco receivers are extremely critical of produce that is received and will reject pallets without question if the food is not up to their standards. I worked for a company that supplied Costco fresh vegetables and their products were selected as their own grade.
Harmony Central! Memory unlocked.
I like Tim Pierce and Jared Bartkowski. Also Corey Congilio for Blues.
I'm a beginner.
What's going on? It's already over?
Yeah, just tuned in.
It started an hour early last week also , I missed it tonight 😢

They reached out after the sale to make sure i was happy and didn't have any issues.
my last purchase was a Les Paul 60's model in ice T
it arrived flawless.
That Knaggs guitar looks like it has a GIANT pick guard on it. I’d love to see how they accomplished the effect.
From Ellesmere Island to Tierra del Fuego we are all americans Phill.
I threw Freeway 5-Way/10 Position Switches in my Nashville Tele (to get the classic neck/bridge combo) and my SSS Strat because of the versatility. Love the series combos
Thnx for the info! will check it out:)
Great show, Phil!
Guitar of the Week is a GREAT idea!
Hey now... it's an uploaded Faux Live Stream...Kewel! This will be interesanté! Happy Friday everybody! You ALL ROCK!! 😎🤘🎸
Love that Knaggs!
All the best
Cheers
The Nag is gorgeous.
The bridge pickup on the knaggs sounds really thin to me.
Harmony Central is how I ended up on your channel years ago when you were still in the shop. Been here since.
Only received 1 damaged guitar (looked like shipping damage) from Guitar Center, and they replaced it right away. Guitar Center has always taken care of any issues.
The only crap guitars I received are from online sites. I'll take Guitar Center or any local music store any day!
26:25 I had to send back a guitar to AMS, and it was fast and problem-free.
AMS in really underrated IMO as a costumer.
Hope, everyone had a great show. Stupid new tabs my veterans drs got me trying. Gone from 2hrs app a night sleep, took to late by mistake woke feeling like hit by a truck flat out. Missing my show as Sat morning in Australia. Wanted to ask question 🤷♂️, I’ll be popping to pick up page as had enough of series 2 noiseless in my really nice Fender Deluxe strat 2007, see through blue, rosewood slab neck 9.5 to 12 compound radius really nice to play. Has the original S-1 little button. Yet my Clapton sig USA has series up sound good. Yet Blue (the Strats name) I’m not happy over the years. Decided to not by fender Texas or Seymour D, but to order set from Phil to Australia 😬, yet wanted to replace the rear wide dynamic Humbucker to one of Phil’s Humbuckers to replace it yet only one Humbucker needed not sure order single coil set and if will do a single Humbucker to Aust be better postage $ USA Standard when they where next from custom shop, now 5 Strats a year with all missing one or two higher produced products. Drives me nuts millennials complained standard didn’t sound as good as should. Fender jumped on that brought all the stupid names 3 countries prices all over the place. QC still slight crap, so price hike they want to pick up there game on QC. Or Fenders name will start going into the CBS owned Fenders, worries me to purchase a new Fender of late. Down missed live, needed a lift after shocker week. Stay strong all.. 🫡🪖🇦🇺 (AKA Grumpy Digger)

Also, severe loss of interest. Those symptoms make people go clinically insane. The worst feeling in the world.
I like guitar of the week. Keep it going.
RE: Guitar Center, I bought two Squire Basses in the last year. Both hand a G nut slot that was cut way too deep. Just sayin'.
Did you get the Knaggs off Reverb, Phil? That one caught my eye instantly. Love it.
Happy Friday y'all!!!
