John Prime was 24 years or so when he wrote this. He wrote this from the perspective of a desperate woman. How could he do this? What gift he had. I for one will miss him very much. Rest in peace.
A true poet, to think, I'm 53 and still figuring it out and he wrote this a 24. When I get to heaven I wanna roll one with him and just hang out, truly heaven
Holy shit! Just found this. These two were born to sing together. I hope they record an album together one day. RIP John Prine. This song alone guarantees your entry in the Heaven Hall Of Fame....and you wrote so many other brilliant ones too. Music lost a great one today.
This wonderful song has been done wonderfully by so many great artists. My favorite is the version from Susan Tedeschi. But this one, wow. Awesome. Just awesome. Thank you, John.
Brandi sang it with John Prine, and I think this wonderful duo has a "country blues" direction, more like the great Bonnie Riatt and Prine himself. Susan Tedeschi and Grace Potter are both tremendous singers with full-out blues and soul power. Different traditions and voices, great results in ALL cases!
I am an old woman named after my mother My old man is another child that's grown old If dreams were lightning thunder was desire This old house would have burnt down a long time ago Make me an angel that flies from Montgom'ry Make me a poster of an old rodeo Just give me one thing that I can hold on to To believe in this living is just a hard way to go When I was a young girl well, I had me a cowboy He weren't much to look at, just free rambling man But that was a long time and no matter how I try The years just flow by like a broken down dam. Make me an angel that flies from Montgom'ry Make me a poster of an old rodeo Just give me one thing that I can hold on to To believe in this living is just a hard way to go There's flies in the kitchen I can hear 'em there buzzing And I ain't done nothing since I woke up today. How the hell can a person go to work in the morning And come home in the evening and have nothing to say. Make me an angel that flies from Montgom'ry Make me a poster of an old rodeo Just give me one thing that I can hold on to To believe in this living is just a hard way to go Songwriters: John Prine
Foxes and Fossils just covered this song in an awesome tribute to John! It is by far the best cover of this song anyone has ever made! Check it out... "Foxes and Fossils" on Tim Purcell's channel! th-cam.com/video/DkjFgO-v1O0/w-d-xo.html
J Prine wrote it from a female perspective of course. Raitt does a nice rendition but she doesn't "own" it . If you must know the truth the child next to Brandi is her daughter. I think this version is delightful. She is not a lesbian. She has many children. She has been around a long time. This is not her first rodeo.
Nobody covers it better than Bonnie Raitt. These two don't even know the meaning behind the song. It's one thing to sing a cover....it's another to actually understand what you're singing about and sing it with feeling. These two don't even come close. And Brandi is smiling and laughing while she's singing the most poignantly sad part of the song depicting a loveless relationship. "There’s flies in the kitchen, I can hear ’em there buzzing And I ain’t done nothing since I woke up today How in the hell can a person go to work in the morning And come home in the evening and have nothing to say"
They were enjoying the collaboration. . .sounds like you have a difficult time enjoying their singing, that's ok, more for the rest of us. . . Don't hate on the empowerment of strong women. .
@@willykayak How odd that you would think I'm a hater just because I didn't enjoy their performance. It's clear they were enjoying their collaboration. I did not enjoy it. I happen to fully support the empowerment of strong women especially since I happen to be one. I raised two kids on my own while touring internationally and domestically with my own successful music career. I even recorded this song but never put it on one of my cds as I recognized that some covers should be left to the ones who do it best.
@@bartwilson2513 You're confusing hate with "didn't enjoy". You should be more careful when you use the word hate as it does not apply to my opinion of this performance at all.
Kaci sings like I used to sing in my room at night when I didn't want anyone to hear me. Seriously, I do not understand her fame--I'm sure she has more voice, but whispering is not singing.
John Prime was 24 years or so when he wrote this. He wrote this from the perspective of a desperate woman. How could he do this? What gift he had. I for one will miss him very much. Rest in peace.
it's called empathy & talent.....sadly missing today
Amazing! What a Human.

I literally am an old woman named after my mother, loved this song & John Prine for years
A big part of my heart was torn away when John Prine died. I felt the same way when John Lennon died. I didn't get drunk this time. RIP, Johns.
RIP John Prine. Long Live John Prine.

Kacey has the voice of an angel.
Yea, incredible!
And John Prine is *STILL* writing great songs; see his "Tree of Forgiveness" album.
Their entire hourlong session is on here as well..this was just one song from it. It’s good.
Brandi is a God sent. I love her music. ❤❤❤
John Prine has a couple of angels singing his song. :) Thanks for sharing this.

"But that was a long time, and no matter how I tried, the years just flowed by, like a broken down damn." Ain't that the brutal, fucking truth.
INCREDIBLE! The ONLY version of this song I've ever loved was Bonnie Raitt's (and my own...) These ladies tore it UP! Thanks for the post.
Try looking up Tedeschi Trucks Band I think they knock it out the park
TTB with Grace Potter excellent version also.

Brandi kills it, as she always seems to do
LOVE these two!! What a lucky duck you are to see them together.
Nice version. There are soooo many. This is a hard song to fuck up because it's so well written. Would love to hear Margo Price cover this song.
It"s not the same song but here's Margo and John at the Newport Folk Festival.

I can picture my Grandma sitting in her rocking chair singing for the Lord to take her home.
How can you not sing along with this...
I've literally never heard two better suited voices for each other. I need a whole collab album STAT!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING LOVE THESE TWO ARTIST

If this don't turn you on, then you ain't got no switches.
Brandi is the truth. And that’s not taking anything from Kacey.
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Nice sound.
Angelic
❤❤❤
Kinda sorta like when Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt covered I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You

Its hard to beat Brandi Carlile at anything! ...But Sammie Purcell along with her Foxes and Fossils performing this sure have!! ...Check them out!
Sammie did a great job on this song! One of the best I have heard!
Kacey channeling Loretta.
Best version of this - love to hear a studio version... just ahead of Bonnie Raitt
That is good
Brandi sounds a lot like Stevie Nicks on this song.
YES 🎸🎸
43 thumbs down. WTF???

Susan Tedeschi

She should have played that Guitar not just hold it

Kacey totally outshines Brandi. The roles should be reversed here.
Over. Rated.
In what way?
Kaci sings like I used to sing in my room at night when I didn't want anyone to hear me. Seriously, I do not understand her fame--I'm sure she has more voice, but whispering is not singing.
Eh just check out more of her songs. She has a unique style that can cross genres. She also is a great songwriter.
brandi wow.......niceee....
Lol
Constantly screaming is not singing... She sings this song as it should be sung.
Kind of bland on Austin City Limits I thought
