I can’t describe the feeling I get listening to this piece...Puccini put this together in one night after someone died and to see something so utterly outstanding and bone chillingly beautiful shows anything is possible.
A few years back, the Dayton Philharmonic played this for a cellist of theirs that had suddenly passed. It was the most beautiful tribute I could have imagined for her.
As a 10 years old kid, I used to listen to this masterpiece every night back in the 50's, as it was the theme song of a dadio program in Havana's CMBF radio station. The most sublime music I have rvrt headr, together with The Humming Chorus... The genius od Puccini at his best...
Puccini is a musician’s dream to play. This is a beautiful example of the composer’s sense of drama, organic structure and timing. Exquisite performance too x
This is the most beautiful and sublime character piece written for string quartet in existence. Puccini manages to convey all his pain and grief into musical perfection. The B section has one of the most sensible melodies ever imagined.
Together with Rakhmaninoff's Vocalise one of the most sophisticated and touching music pieces. You probably know this but also try Rakhmaninoff's op. 23 #5.
as many versions as there may be of this piece, i keep coming back to this one. wonderful playing, wonderful interpretation, there's nothing like feeling this piece !
The Duke of Savoy was king of Spain for a brief 3 years. He abdicated citing the Spanish people to be ungovernable. He returned to Italy and died in 1890, I found this piece because I live in Amadeo, Philippines, a municipality named in his honor. Life can suck for kings too.
I heard this piece for the first time in my 86 years of life this year at the Quartetto Indaco concert at the Italian Cultural Institute in Tokyo. It was performed as an encore. It was a small piece, only five or six minutes long, but listening to it for one or two minutes I couldn't help to be moved to tears. Whose and what work is it? A few days later, I emailed the Institute. They responded immediately and told me it was Giacomo Puccini's Crisantemi. Thanks to that, I was able to listen to the piece again on TH-cam. A lot of thanks! This quartet was written by Puccini in one night in memory of his patron's sudden death. Listening to this piece, my two friends who died in quick succession this summer come to mind.
I LOVE the sound you bring out from your instruments! Italian? They are so well matched! Please record your Ravel! Thank you, Enso Quartet, for your many splendid videos too!
It's a matter of taste I know, but in the case of this piece of music I believe the original quartet version works best - the intimacy of Puccini's original is not improved by adding numbers and basses - to my ear the string orchestral version seems overblown - or perhaps I should say over-bowed.
+Izzy G Perhaps you do, and I'm sure it's still great to play, and I hope any performance(s) go really well for you; but maybe - if your orchestra is good enough (that's not intended to be snide; I believe it's a v. difficult piece to play) - you could suggest tackling Schonberg's "Verklarte Nacht" (apologies for missing umlauts) - that's a piece which imho really transfers well from chamber forces to string orchestra - and is similarly beautiful, though more dramatic, which I believe lends itself better to the larger forces.
As part of the weekend of concerts to celebrate John Woolrich’s 70th birthday he programmed this exquisite piece along with music by himself , Webern, Stravinsky and Shostakovich .
Puccini composed this beautiful elegy for string quartet in memory of his friend Amadeo l of Savoy, Duke of Aosta, who was king of Spain for two years and forty days.
I can’t describe the feeling I get listening to this piece...Puccini put this together in one night after someone died and to see something so utterly outstanding and bone chillingly beautiful shows anything is possible.
When I hear this piece, I feel autumn
I’m so glad Puccini took this and put it in his opera Manon lescaut😥
Puccini wrote this beautiful and melancholic piece in a single night upon the death of the Duke of Savoy.
I first heard this when driving, it was on the radio. I had to stop the car and just cry.
Crying and it was raining today
A few years back, the Dayton Philharmonic played this for a cellist of theirs that had suddenly passed. It was the most beautiful tribute I could have imagined for her.
Most expressive play of this Puccini quartet. I revisited it many times A most touching performance…

Sublime. Makes me cry, but then Puccini always does. Such emotion.

This piece is so underrated!
No, it is not.....
@@kmrerk yes it is
Bravo. Incredibly rich performance. The fluidity and the collaboration between each musician is top notch. Masterfully played.
Beautiful color grading and cinematography.
Franz Schubert would have been delighted to have written this, and you can't get much better than that. A fine performance from the quartet.

Precioso. Magnífica interpretación.
Man, that cellist has got it going on. He's with the program.
Bravo! Very lovely performance of this gorgeous piece.
this peice is so beautiful and intricate
Fenséges. Könnyekig megható. Tele érzelemmel.
Csodálatosan szép érzelmes előadás, mindig rácsodálkozok, ha hallom. Végtelenül harmónikus. 👍
Can this interpretation of this masterwork be topped. NO. Plain and simple.
The main theme/motif, with vn 1 & vn 2 rising and va & vc descending, is like the tragic unfolding of the namesake flower
Just heard this Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society. Outstanding!!!

ak_violist omg i was there too i was the 4th chair cellist!!!
This was the piece I heard the last time my violin instructor played with her quartet. I can't describe how close this gets to how I felt then.
Wonderful!!

Semplicemente emozionante !
I absolutely adore this
So beautifully played!!! ❤
love the cellist!!

Robert Davidson I agree. But I'm playing it with an orchestra as a bassist so I'll just have to live with that ha ha

I came to hear this after reading the history of Amadeo l of Spain. Upon his death his friend, Puccini wrote it.
bravissimo!
Chills.... ooooooh.
Puccini composed this beautiful elegy for string quartet in memory of his friend Amadeo l of Savoy, Duke of Aosta, who was king of Spain for two years and forty days.
Bravooooo
Reminds me of Schubert's "The death and the maiden". So simple yet strong and moving.
not so simple as it seems...
Per curiosità, ho ascoltato " The death and the maiden" di Schubert e non ho trovato nessunissima rassomiglianza col sublime "Crisantemi" di Puccini.
YES I was Thinking the same.

Heart opener! Such beautiful music
Mums, tulips, gladiolas, CANNAS, and begonias are my favorite....oh and hibiscus!
I’m pretty sure that Puccini used this quartet in the last act of his opera "Manon Lescaut".
