  • "Why This Young Hawaiian Chef Still Cooks Underground." In traditional Hawaiian culture, it was important for food to take you closer to the Gods. Come to Oahu, Hawai'i, where young chef Kalā Domingo, a culinary student who also works for his father's catering company, gives Native Hawaiian kids a taste of this godly, traditional food, showing them where their food comes from--including making sure pigs are Ma'e ma'e (clean) - prepping sugar cane and banana leaves, cooking with kuleana (responsibility) - and making the whole thing come together in an Imu, a pit oven or underground steam cooker.

Kala, you're really surprising me! Long time no see, love to your Ohana. I'm so happy that we had a chance to work on the many murals collaborated with Aunty Meleanna, Uncles Solomon, Carl, Aunty Hari and many more Hawaiian educators. The Bishop Museum project, Hawaii Convention Center...what-more than 12, all Hawaiian themed that influenced communities and our Aloha as Na 'Oiwi. Congratulations on your marriage and new family. Since you were in elementary school, high school, etc. Your dedication and Pono wale no...Shines! It's wonderful to see your humility and continued betterment of community, family, and Values of na kupuna a iluna a I lalo. All the Best to you and your endeavors. Uncle Al

I live in the South, but Kalua Pork is the best way to cook a whole pig. I love that you bury it and forget it too. It leaves time to prepare everything else and rest in order to be the best host/hostess to the guests.

Auwe, noho'i...Kala, I almost forgot to mention Uncle Kahi Ching - another of your mentors in the Maoli Art Movement. You have a history in this as, also, an excellence in Hawaiian Immersion.
I was so proud of all you haumana, under Kumu Meleanna Aluli Meyer, and the five master artists, when you got to speak and represent Hawai'i at the Asian-Pacific Economic Council (APEC) as a result of being one of 23 haumana doing the 10 x 60' mural in situ at the Hawaii Convention Center Center, Ala Moana. It's historical as well that you also did that mural with all of us for the Bishop Museum's renovated Pacific Hall. I'm soon to be 76 years old and it's hopeful that students, people, like you make Hope come alive for our endangered existence. Never forget the Lei of Aloha we shared for over 12 years with the Maoli Art Movement.

Just because you think it's prohibited doesn't mean it is for other cultures.
