    I don't mean to be rude, but I would highly recommend you purchase the workshop manual for the MGB. Should be easy to find on eBay etc. These cars are SO basic, as is their engineering and the manual will answer the thousands of questions you're going to encounter. Jus' sayin'....

      I've tried convincing this idiot since day 1 he refuses. I actually own the shop manual from having previously owned one. Wait till he can't figure out why the brake warning light will not cut off.

    to be honest, it's comforting to see that, even with all the tools, a nice shop & plenty of skills, you still get your ass handed to you like I do pretty much every time I go near a spanner. :-) at least you never give up.

    Hey randy, Why don't you fix an exhaust hose in the shop? so you can hook up the exhaust to an outside (through a wall) airvent? Would make life easier to just be able to get the exhaust fumes outside !

    Think the distributor outer housing has to come off first there's a small Allen key you undo on top then the spindle slides out or give it a good clean and your see a small Allen key screw holding the bracket to the block the bracket has to come out of the block aswell

    • @1chish
      @1chish 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Normally the distributor will slide out of the housing revealing the countersunk screw holding the housing to the block. But this one has the old aluminium / steel reaction going on. So the clamp is covering that screw (it can be a flat or philips screw) so I think Randy will have to sacrifice the clamp to get to that screw.

  • @dustyd69
    @dustyd69 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    stuck distributor?
    If indeed the clamp "pinch bolt" is loose and the two hold-down bolts are free it is ~highly likely~ the dizzy outer shaft is corroded in place in the block. You cannot remove the clamp completely without first removing the diz.
    This can be a true contest to free up. My suggestion for first attempt is to mix up a slurry og ATF and acetone 50/50, shake it to emulsion and pour it down around the block/dizzy body... let it stand for hours. GENTLY rap on the dizzy around the base and try to turn it.
    This is a: "Wash, rinse, repeat." exercise. The body of the diz is alloy and consider it fragile. Many have ended up in scrap piles from overzeal at this job.

    • @boaterbill5346
      @boaterbill5346 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dusty is right the block has a metal flange/sleeve combination which slides into the block holding the distributor drive gear into the oil pump and that is held into the block with two countersunk machine screws, then the distributor clamp is bolted to that part then the distributor is installed timing calibrated then the clamp bolt is tightened, again dusty is right often the aluminum distributor seizes itself to the aforementioned sleeve requiring brute force/heat/destruction to get it out. FYI that is a Lucas 45d points type distributor you have installed in your b which is not stock, originally it came with a 45de4 lucas electronic ignition distributor which was not the most reliable, a Petronix kit for your 45d would be the most economical option assuming you can get it out without destroying it other than that a used distributor from a 68-74 b with a Petronix kit would be the next most economical option, I have them in droves in my barn lol

    Randy- just as I mentioned POR-15 for the AMC fuel tank, you can use POR-15 rust encapsulator to seal up the rust on the floorboards of the MG. After you get the rust solved it may benefit to add some stick on sound deadening on the floor before installing the carpet.

    Fiberglass resin and matting are so easy to mix up and use for those small holes in the floorboard. Little messy, but so quick and easy. But yeah, the tape will work just fine temporarily. If I were close, I'd knock it out for free.

    If you were wondering what those old ratty straps were they're called rebound straps. They're cheap to replace maybe 20 bucks for the pair. What they do is keep the car from going too far up if the car goes airborne. It will then land down on the rubber bumpers. Hope that helps

    I had the same problem with my distributor. In the end I drilled a hole through the distributor body, (off centre from the shaft) just big enough to get a round pry bar in, then wiggled it backward and forward until it came loose. Completely destroyed the distributor but it got it out. I replaced it with a 123 unit and have never looked back. Good luck, can’t wait for the next video.

    Apparently, you bought both of those cars, because you wanted to make things in your garage match eachother.
    What you spent on parts, you will save on paint being able to only need to buy just one color it looks like.
    Bolt the two cars together and make a cool catamarang type of car that uses 2 lanes of traffic!

  • @oakmg8352
    @oakmg8352 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Those straps are over travel limiters for the rear axle in case you do a Dukes of Haazard. Lol
    Replace the water valve, the diaphragm will split and leak coolant into the distributor. Common problem. I carry a spare...

    That's what happens to me every time I work on a car. I plan to get "this" "that" and "the other" done. I usually get "this" done, "that" fights me and takes 6 extra hours, and "the other" doesn't get done because I break something and can't find parts locally and have to order them. Great video as always Randy. And BTW, your AMC and MG look about the same color. :)

    Just hope that you do not have to replace the mid mount rubber. If you are curious and go underneath and take the oil pan off replace the pump, they are pretty cheap. The pan is not bad taking off. Did a video of putting the oil pump and the petronix electric ignition on. I will say it does make a difference.

    I would recommend check the timing and if it's OK then leave the distributor as is. There's a high risk of breaking something else trying to get that loose with force. You could put your choice of penetrating fluid on it over a few days and see if it frees itself but using brute force is a recipe for disaster. The engine didn't sound like it needed the timing adjusted to me. If anything it was running a bit rich.

    • @AutoAuctionRebuilds
      @AutoAuctionRebuilds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Timing was only 15 deg. off from where it needs to be lol.

    • @mindblownwatcher8536

      The timing variation can be just from changing the point gap.

  • @charlierosenbusch3007
    @charlierosenbusch3007 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    First time commenting here I usually do it on Facebook. Those straps in the rear keep the rearend from ovet extending. As far as the disributor goes dry ice may do the trick use the ice to keep the shaft of the distributor cool while you heat the block surrounding.

  • @RaytheRussian
    @RaytheRussian 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Randy. Drill and tap a hole down the center of the shaft and screw in a slide hammer. It should just pull straight out. There is an o ring about 1/4 way down the body of it and it's driven by an offset drive. It will either come out or the shaft will come out then your going to have to chisel the rest out gently. Once you break the bit stuck in the hole it should get easier to get the rest out. Let it soak with wd-40 or similar over night.

    Randy love watching the MGB you're doing a great job I think there might be an Allen screw at the base of the distributor not sure never done one. I do know that those cars are worth a lot of money considered collectable classics here in the UK. Also that the one's with chrome bumpers are worth quite a bit more, you can get conversion kits and bumpers for them if you need any more parts to try Rimmer Brothers UK they have a huge stock for British car parts I am sure they can ship them to you.

    You can mount that isolator where the pump meets the body, and ad the Negative wire to the Negative wire on the pump, that should help eliminate any noise, but i would also check to see if you need the isolator as it is newer technology, also i thought those ac units had thermostats to shut down the ac after a certain temp, if im not mistaken in winter they only briefly cycle to remove humidity if needed
