  • Imagine a time when Waterloo station had just 14 trains a day. That was a lifetime ago because today the busiest transport hub in Europe marks its 170th anniversary. Paul Clifton has been on a tour with a man who's worked there since he was a teenager.

He seemed sad when he said that things have changed, that people no longer say good morning, afternoon, etc

Why did he never get a promotion in 65 years?

Where are you from?? We here in the UK don't just promote people just because they've worked for the company for a long time. A hospital porter can't do a surgeon's job.

EliteXtasy I’m pretty sure they could’ve given training and got into a different department or something, not necessarily something difficult.

He potentially did get a promotion at some point, but now he's well past retirement age and only works part time - and he obviously enjoys being on the ground helping people!

maler212 tbh he seems like the kind of guy that would decline a promotion because he loves what he does

I was under the impression that Gare du Nord was the undisputed busiest trainstation in Europe, all the busiest ones on earth are in Tokyo otherwise

Depends how you count things. Waterloo station isn't as busy as the Gare du Nord but the entire Waterloo complex, which has Waterloo mainline, Waterloo East, Waterloo Underground and Southwark Underground under one roof (you can literally walk through all four without going outside once) facilitates some 225 million rail journeys a year. Gare du Nord was 215 million.

The railway was kept then, no Buddleia. Privatisation has not worked.
