My father took us to Mexico in his plane several times a year in the 70’s and we had few problems. But when he drove there on his own later on he said it was no longer possible to travel through Mexico safely. He stopped because it was only a matter of time before tragedy would strike. You can do something risky 9 times but then that 10th time…the chute doesn’t open, the landing gear fails, or you walk into a convenience store at midnight during a robbery. Very sorry for this loss 😢

I was in the state of Oaxaca not too long ago. Was there for about 3 weeks. NO/NONE obvious signs of the Cartels there. You have to watch out for petty crimes of course. That's everywhere in the world. A lot of wonderful people and some of the most delicious food ever created by humanity to be found there. Towns and cities very clean. I did not want to come back to the US. I am SERIOUSLY considering retiring down there.
So, even with half of their territory taken away by the USA, Mexico is still a very big country. The Cartels are not in every city and town, LOL... Yes, there are areas that they have de facto control of. You ask the locals where to go and especially where NOT to go. Just like the US. Do NOT involve yourself in stupid activities. Very simple rule. I look at the comments for this video fed by the Media, wow, the fear mongering is strong. From my POV it's pathetic and the rabbits just repeat to each other what they are told...
Lastly, the Cartels are now diversifying but they came to power thanks to American drug-heads. So thank American drug-heads and don't forget to give honorable mention to our own Big Pharma.

Reading the comments I just never get how people talk like Mexico is one singular destination. Mexico is a big country. Most of the danger is concentrated in the North: Chihuahua, Durango, Sonora, B.C. Coahuila, Tamaulipas. It's not so much in the interior. The cartels main business is with the United States so the battles taking place are not surprisingly in the North where all the trade routes are. You can fly to Mexico City & you'll be perfectly fine. You can fly to Cancun or Mazatlan & as long as you stay in the hotel areas you will be relatively safe. Cartel members aren't looking to hunt you down as soon as you arrive in Mexico. Now if you are driving across the border IN to Mexico & you choose certain highways at night, which is stupid, then you might be taking a bit of a risk. The hysteria here is laughable. Understand that Mexico is a BIG COUNTRY. It's not one city. Just like the SOUTHSIDE OF CHICAGO is one place it isn't representative of the ENTIRETY of the United States. It's a diverse country. While there is violence in certain parts there are relatively safe areas where your risk is very minimal.

I was in Tijuana and moved legally to the US and haven't visited for more than 40 years and I would never put myself or my family in danger. I would never return to Tijuana or any part of Mexico cause I don't trust anyone. Sad..and if they had taken the kids them too would have been dead. It's horrible for the same people...Our people do that to eachother. So sad.

So I was born in Mexico City. My dad's family is from there. I don't necessarily like going to Mexico City but there are areas there that rival Beverly Hills. Mexico is a BIG country. People talk about it like it's one big city. It's not. Most of the danger is in the North: Tamaulipas, Coahuila, Chihuahua, Sonora, B.C. etc. Growing up I always had to listen to ignorant comments from mostly Chicanos/Mexican Americans about Mexico being dangerous. They have never been to Mexico City or interior Mexico, just border towns. The North is not representative of ALL of Mexico just like some small town in the middle of Idaho doesn't represent ALL of the United States. There is much diversity between cities & states in Mexico. Best way to avoid danger is don't DRIVE into Mexico. FLY to your destination. Some of the hysteria here is going overboard. Your experience as a NORTENA does not reflect all of Mexico.
