For people saying it looks kiddie or a toy little do they know that 1) there is a alternate color for the international release and 2) it replicates the color and design of NEOGEO Arcade cabinets in japan.
Ryuujin1078, plus, as you probably know, we used to have these back in the day. Little arcade replica units, they were so cool, and very popular before home consoles became mainstream.
I'm just glad we live in a world where this is possible. I remember seeing a Neo Geo console back in the early nineties at a computer fair... there was no way I could afford one, never mind the games.. I never knew anyone that owned one either.
@eta prime - The flickering shadows are output by the real hardware, but on a real CRT arcade monitor, the flickering is not noticeable and is a an old coding 'cheat' to get a semi-transparent shadow (due to phosphor persistence)
you are not wrong, in theory that was what they tried to achieve, but in reality it doesn't work and you see a blinking shadow. source: I still have my old CRT TV.
Get the Japanese version then. International Version only has: King of Fighters 95 King of Fighters 97 King of Fighters 98 King of Fighters 2000 King of Fighters 2002 Japanese Version has: The King of Fighters 94 The King of Fighters 95 The King of Fighters 96 The King of Fighters 97 The King of Fighters 98 The King of Fighters 99 The King of Fighters 2000 The King of Fighters 2001 The King of Fighters 2002 The King of Fighters 2003
Yes, the blinking shadows are accurate. They did this in many old games to get around the fact that they couldn't do transparencies. They would just flicker the shadow sprite on and off quickly.
I hope this mini can be modded....If more games can be added and it can be connected to a TV...I will definitely get it. I am from Latin America and King of Fighters franchise is huge here, so the Japanese version is more appealing to me.
+ETA Prime, The NEOGEO was a sprite- and color powerhouse but didn't support alpha transparency like the SNES. It was very common to disable a sprite every odd frame to give the illusion of 50% transparency, It became somewhat of a visual trademark of the platform. :) During that time artists used a lot of clever techniques to go around limitations, this is one of them. The reason why NEO GEO often stuck with this technique was due to acade cabinets used CRT-monitors and pixels didn't blur like on RF or RCA compatible home televisions. The Mega Drive on the other hand used a lot of raster patterns, both to create transparency (waterfalls in Sonic), as well as adding more colors (backgrounds in Lion King... which looks like stripes during emulation, but on a TV it looked like extra colors). Sonic used both raster, odd/even sprite technique (for the shield powerup), as well as scanline palette swap (to create underwater sections), It's really cool to be honest, they created transparency by shifting the palette of the game after a certain scanline was drawn on-screen). :)
I usually complain about lack of a digital pad but in this case it's a non issue Nobody is going to be playing their best on the built in controls regardless because of the position & size, I definitely want one but I'd play with a pad :) to me the in built controls are a nice novelty
Yeah, the flickering shadows were indeed part of the game. In fact, if you took a component-modded AES to an HDTV, the ones that incorrectly process the 240p image as 480i, the shadows would have either vertical stripes or just be solid/invisible. It would be the same if you tried any of the 240p-supported Neo-Geo fighter compilations for the PS2 and did that over component as well.
10:25 Metal Slug 2 was the worst offender in the series when it comes to slowdown. They "fixed" it by releasing Metal Slug X which is sort of a "remix" of Metal Slug 2. X and 3 are my favorite entries in the series.
Awesome vid! It’s great how you explain everything in detail & thanks for calling out the usual slow-downs. Also I believe the mini cabinet looks better without the joystick sticker.
The slow down was always there for Metal Slug 2 on all platforms it has been released. SNK later released Metal Slug X which is an update of 2 but improved with new gameplay features and no slow down.
KOF beats every SF except the Alpha series. Alpha reigns supreme. Absolutely stoked that both the Last Blades are included. I always thought they were superior to Samurai Showdown. I am surprised they didn't include any of the more esoteric (but still well known) titles; e.g. 'Nam1975, Magician Lord, Waku Waku 7..
Hey ETA, the shadows do appear the same way on the original arcades. The reason why is because the Neo Geo hardware doesn’t support alpha effects (transparency) so the trick here is to have a solid shadow flickering quickly to give the impression of transparency (a very old trick during the 8-16bit era). It’s just more noticeable on non-CRT displays since they work refresh differently. You can briefly see the solid silhouette hanging for longer when you KO the computer :)
Wow I am so darn jealous, it looks awesome, I now have to pick one up. I used to own the Neo Geo CD and I thought that it's controllers where the best thing I have ever used.
🙂👍 Excellent video. 🙂 I have brought, the Neo Geo Mini today (18/08/2023) and it is the same version as the one you have shown in this video. 🙂 Plus well done for finding the option to change the Japanese language in to English. 👏
I am so surprised that you don't like KOF, it has more elaborate combos and moving parts vs the SF series. I used the play KOF 2002 competitively back in mexico and let me tell you that SF was not even considered a "skill" fighting game. MVC 1 and MVC 2 were considered just because of the button combinations and character assists
At 13:44, the cloud disappearing like that on the left side of the screen got to be an emulation bug. It does not behave like that when I play Blazing Star on the Nintendo Switch. :(
I loved when you were saying the KOF game titles, it sounded like a rap. LOL. Also Metal Slug 2 lags alot regardless of anything, Metal Slug X fixed majority of the slow downs.
Shadows blink on real hardware. It's because SNK was trying to fake transparencies like the infamous Saturn checkerboard transparency. I used to notice it in arcade cabinets but it wasn't as glaring. There are probably shaders these days that can help it.
Thanks for the video, cannot wait to get mine. I bought it from amazon JP; but shipping is until August 20-23. One funny thing you mentioned is that you don’t like KOF as much & the Japanese version is focused on “fighter games” while the International version is focused on “shooters” again thanks a lot!
You must have had the street fighter machine to yourself at the arcades during the 90s because, where I used to play, everybody would always gather around the 4-game mvs
The stickers are random btw. You can buy a sticker pack for 1000 yen that contains 4 stickers, which are also RANDOM. I got mine with King of Fighters 96 Kyo.
If you get slowdowns on your Recalbox/RetroPi while playing Neo Geo games, just overclock Retroarch emulator to max (200) in the Retroarch menu. After that games like Metal Slug 2 run perfectly. Overclocking the Pi 2/3 CPU is not necessary... I like the Neo GEO Mini idea, but Recalbox with retro-shader on is the way to go for Neo Geo games. Perfect retro-style graphics on modern displays, huge arcade controller support list, Unibios and of course no slowdowns after tuning. So there is no need to hack it.... SNES Mini hacking is better because you have the very low inputlag if you leave the original emulation software on it(just +25ms than original hardware). And of course high quality replica SNES controllers!
I am considering modding this for my car. The 3.5" screen is very high quality and worth the $100. If I can separate the screen and fit it in my console and run the HDMI to the dual screens in the back and have access to the USB controller input it would be a great and affordable travel syatem.
If you like street Fighter 2 hyper fighting or 2X play KOF 94 and 95. just remember to watch out for Taunts and max bar( very very usefull) exept of that you can play like SF. Actually King of Fighter 95 is the best street fighter you could imagine. With hop jumps KOF evolved a lot in a more complex and technical game. But it's a shame not playing these games.
I should have say since KOF 96 and hop jumps the game changed in a more different/complexe gameplay. But really play Kof 94 and 95 and you ll have this "street fighter experience" we love. Play art of fighting team like aken ryu. watch their combos and their special close moves in 95. Or play heidern like a guile for instance. And always charge your bar to max damage and taunt to level down your opponent. ;)
A bit pricey but it's pretty cool looking. I knew that this would be more expensive because of the build, I hope they make a legit mini version for like $100 in the future.
Hence why I mainly collect for the 360, PS3 era and back. A time in which you got to keep your games and not have to be online or download to your hard drive before being able to play, shout it from the rooftops LMAO.
Have you ever seen an ant in your life? I'm pretty sure that ants are not to the scale of this. If you were TRYING to go for "clever", the least you could have done is said "mouse" or "rat" or "pet Iguana". But I don't think you would have had the mental capacity to come up with that.
And no, it's a Neo Geo for people who want all those games in a tiny, adorable form they can put on a shelf and display. Some people WANT that, you know. And they're NOT fucking "suckers" for having their own tastes. Get fucked.
It looks nice, though smaller than expected. I like how they have the controller/expansion ports on the side where they don't interfere with the 'clean' look of the front. Of the 2 marquee stickers, the 4-slot style matches the old arcade look more, though maybe if the other one didn't have the white face, if it just had the logo in the center I'd probably go with it.
On original hardware, shadows flicker on and off perfectly every frame. It looks semi transparent. But this rate will never match the refresh rate of modern screens exactly. So you will see a few frames of it on, then a few frames of it off. As it will miss every off frame for a second or so, then it'll go out of sync and miss every off frame for a second or so. It was 59.8 hz or something, but our screens are 60hz exactly.
Great review. I cant wait to see if u can and how easily it is to add games... regardless my getting one of these neogeo is one of my favorite systems ever. Thanks for sharing.
Do you realize you are getting $10000 worth of games! The reason I say this is back in the 90"s when I wanted to buy a neo Geo the games were around $250 each! Amazing deal! Lol
Manhwa Fan Who cares? A rom is the essence of a game...that's what it's all about. I'd rather have a Pi than original hardware that can die at any time now.
CB W I'm not saying it's the same thing or equally valuable. I can copy my rom as often as I want so it has zero $$$ value. But a rom is more valuable to me, because(!) I can copy it (preservation). A painting and a picture is not thesame entirely. The rom is what makes the game, so a cartridge and a loose rom are a lot closer alike...it's the same thing, but without the physical form. With the right filter it looks and plays exactly the same on a modern tv as it did on now ancient hardware.
Hey ETA, great review! I am a huge neo geo fan but Those retropie options have an annoying input lag sensation. Did you feel any input lag using neo geo mini’s HDMI output ?
Dude the creators of KOF worked on Street Fighter 1, then Capcom stopped working with SNK and that's how we got KOF. Some of the music is same even because SNK had the rights.
Love it, in an ideal world would prefer it to be slighly larger and come with all neo geo games (well bare minimum snk ones at least due to complex license snafu)
Well it uses USB type C connectors so it SEEMS possible. You can certainly get adapters. I buy packs of 5 on Wish for super cheap all the time. Sometimes I give them out as stocking stuffers just because everyone who has a modern Android phone is so pissed about having to buy new cables and peripherals.
Btw, super excited for teardown, I wanna see the guts of that little stick and see if there's a way to throw a gate in there, though I'm guessing not. If you get the pad I wanna see inside that too.
Metal Slug 2 has slow down because of how compress the game was. They released Metal Slug X which is an upgrade version of MS2 and that has no slow down.
Thank goodness the emulation is good on this thing! Take that, Neo Geo X! USB-C for power? I can play this in the car using my Nintendo Switch’s car adaptor! $80 for a controller? Let’s hope there are other USB-C pads we can use...
Would you recommend this over the international version if so why? Also is it hard to understand the individual game options on the Japanese version? Please respond as soon as possible, im literally on Amazon about to order one or the other.
I seen your video about how you got one and how you where going to do a review later and I was like screw that I'm looking for reviews now! Lol but I'm back to watch your review which is probably a better vid anyway
For people saying it looks kiddie or a toy little do they know that 1) there is a alternate color for the international release and 2) it replicates the color and design of NEOGEO Arcade cabinets in japan.
Oh man, don't ever show these people what game centers look like. They'd be horrified if they saw a blast city cab. :D
Ryuujin1078 would have been nice if they went with the red cabinets u.s version as that is more memorable here
Ryuujin1078, plus, as you probably know, we used to have these back in the day.
Only rich people and athletes had one 🤣
I literally was saving up like $600 for one but couldn’t at such a young age
@eta prime - The flickering shadows are output by the real hardware, but on a real CRT arcade monitor, the flickering is not noticeable and is a an old coding 'cheat' to get a semi-transparent shadow (due to phosphor persistence)
John Parker how many other CRT exclusives are out there?
you are not wrong, in theory that was what they tried to achieve, but in reality it doesn't work and you see a blinking shadow.
source: I still have my old CRT TV.
True - though somehow it looks less harsh than on an LCD, perhaps because of phosphor afterglow. Or it could be my nostalgia!
The flickering shadows made the gamers of that generation actually immune to flashing lights.
Everyone in Mexico will buy one of these for Kof
Get the Japanese version then.
International Version only has:
King of Fighters 95
King of Fighters 97
King of Fighters 98
King of Fighters 2000
King of Fighters 2002
Japanese Version has:
The King of Fighters 94

P o o p e r S c o o p e r ' 9 9 i got the Japanese version just because it’s has all the KOF!!! LOL
@@darkmask441 true, the controls are garbage tho
Yup
Love the username, 💩💩💩
Yes, the blinking shadows are accurate. They did this in many old games to get around the fact that they couldn't do transparencies. They would just flicker the shadow sprite on and off quickly.
17:00 yes its the same on the original neogeo, as a KOF fanboy i can tell you everything about it XD

Lou Gallegos it connects to TV. Confirmed
Lol I know right? I remember the long lines at the corner store after school to see who was the best.
You gotta door, you gotta gym!
I purchased both Japanese and International version. I love both of them, but I’m a little more partial to the colorful Japanese one.
Not that I was paying attention to the release date but it came out faster than I thought. Sweet.
The best mini retro system by far. The screen looks excellent too.

My childhood in mini box. Really want one
Please tell us your Email.
can I know the reason first please?
I am from SNK NEOGEO mini Team and we would like to give NEOGEO gift to you.
Thanks. Please can you give me your email address so I could reply with mine.
I don't want to disclose my personal mail in public place for security reason. Hope you understand.
I wish there was nearest neighbor interpolation and integer scaling. It looks incredibly blurry to me on the HDMI output.
Yes it looks like shit. Mine came last week. I do not want to play it with HDMI. It's absolutely awful!
hey this is your chance to get into KOF, they are incredibly fun games!
KOF beats every SF except the Alpha series. Alpha reigns supreme.

The shadows on KOF do blink on my MVS. It may be bc of the refresh on CRT compared to LCD.
Ok awesome, I wasn’t sure but you are probably correct about the CRT aspect
Just tested on AES; shadows blink exactly the same in KOF 2001 but not in some other version (i.e. 99). Think its just a feature of the game.
This is super cute! Hope it is released for a reasonable price in the UK!
Awesome! one of the first video reviews of this system!
It look sharp on that mini screen .lots of great games
Definitely go with the joystick and buttons sticker, this unit is made to resemble a special MVS machine only released in Japan.
Analog stick was a deal breaker for me. But I get it. People will buy it anyway so it really doesn't matter at all. Thanks for the review.
Dbn Poldermans I know! Their 8 way, clicky, micro switch joy stick is one of the brand's definitive features. It blows my mind they went with analog.
Way to subtly insinuate that anyone else who does get it is beneath your personal taste. That wasn't assholish at all or anything.
By the way, great video. First time I'm seeing one of these machines in detail. Now I really want one.
🙂👍 Excellent video. 🙂 I have brought, the Neo Geo Mini today (18/08/2023) and it is the same version as the one you have shown in this video. 🙂 Plus well done for finding the option to change the Japanese language in to English. 👏
ETA you did it again man great vid.
Thanks for sharing - this booth had quite the crowd at E3 checking things out :)
What’s a crowd
Instead of drilling holes in that Neo Geo try induction charging then it could charge while playing if left on the induction pad.
SF is too slow especially modern SF. Alpha series were fast especially 3.
All those KFs, surprised that waku waku 7 is missing I like that game. But king of monsters is cool.
They definitely should have added Waku to the mix.
My favorite game I have on my raspberry pi because nobody has heard of it and it freaks people out
Waku Waku 7 is from Sunsoft, and no third party party games are in the mini.
Also, too many Metal Slugs, a little less would have left some space for less known games.
Jason Thorpe, I would have liked a baseball game. Just my nostalgia from arcades growing up. Baseball Stars.
Subscribed with notification bell for life.
KoF '98 & KoF '02 are some of the best, stick with playing those!
Shadows blink on real hardware. It's because SNK was trying to fake transparencies like the infamous Saturn checkerboard transparency. I used to notice it in arcade cabinets but it wasn't as glaring. There are probably shaders these days that can help it.
Will the us controllers work for the Japanese ver.??
Want, need, must have! Great review Sir.
I really hope they make plenty of these when they come to the west. Non of that NES classic nonsense.
Yes the shadows do that in the actual arcade units.
Very rapidly to look see through.
Thanks for the video, cannot wait to get mine. I bought it from amazon JP; but shipping is until August 20-23. You must have had the street fighter machine to yourself at the arcades during the 90s because, where I used to play, everybody would always gather around the 4-game mvs
The controllers are up for preorder in Taiwan, about 28usd each.
Kof is the best
I would prefer the Japan version because of the colours of buttons
The stickers are random btw. You can buy a sticker pack for 1000 yen that contains 4 stickers, which are also RANDOM. I got mine with King of Fighters 96 Kyo.
I lov this channel never said that before!!
Dude, you are a video beast lately. Awesome work.
Love it cant wait to see what you do to this little guy.
month or two and i bet all china gonna be filled with bunches of neogeo mini controllers about 15$ per unit (quality not included)
sai blades It's actually made in china #LOL
You’re absolutely right, they are everywhere now.
Some Asian arcades and the console had issues with the shadow but the American version work just fine.
The shadows in KOF should flicker very quickly to give them a translucent effect. I don't think it's ever properly emulated.
That's so freaking cool!!
Do you by chance have the Neo-Geo X Gold? If so have you tried the joysticks from that?
That's an awesome little cabinet, kinda reminds me of the old early 80's coleco table top cabinets
I am considering modding this for my car. The 3.5" screen is very high quality and worth the $100. If I can separate the screen and fit it in my console and run the HDMI to the dual screens in the back and have access to the USB controller input it would be a great and affordable travel syatem.

Is not difficult to rest the hands and press the buttons? The hardware did not shake when you move the stick? Is heavy enough?
A bit pricey but it's pretty cool looking. I knew that this would be more expensive because of the build, I hope they make a legit mini version for like $100 in the future.
Tidal Yacht That would be RIDICULOUS! I second that.
Hence why I mainly collect for the 360, PS3 era and back. A time in which you got to keep your games and not have to be online or download to your hard drive before being able to play, shout it from the rooftops LMAO.
What is this, a Neo Geo for ants??
Michael Frost its a neogeo for suckers

ᵗʰᵉNight★Star jeez, it's just a joke
Controller is under $80 eff this
I want this for my desk at work.
Is this coming to the US? I haven’t seen a release date
Do you think people on sites like Etsy will sell custom stickers for the marquee and button pad?
Loved the vid liked and subscribed
Would it be possible to link the machines together or it’s not?
Great review. I cant wait to see if u can and how easily it is to add games... regardless my getting one of these neogeo is one of my favorite systems ever. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks sir ! Great video and definitely want one of these now!
Can’t wait to get my hand on the US version.
Nice vid ETA !
Do you realize you are getting $10000 worth of games! The reason I say this is back in the 90"s when I wanted to buy a neo Geo the games were around $250 each! Amazing deal! Lol
Ray Padilla nah these are emulation and not the real deals. Stop fooling yourself.
Manhwa Fan

Nice review. Will try get one when I’m next in Japan or U.K model.
Nice review, so a type C to USB, plus a regular USB control does not work in it??
no CRT/Scanline filter?
I was tempted ordering one immediately but I think I'll waiut for the international release for better games
Love it, in an ideal world would prefer it to be slighly larger and come with all neo geo games (well bare minimum snk ones at least due to complex license snafu)
Shadows in KOF looked just the same on the arcade. Many thanks for the review by the way still waitin' for the international version in France :-)
Awesome ETA Prime. I wonder if there will be a controller port mod to allow us to connect a full size arcade stick.
Carl Couture looks like some one has already tried...

Btw, super excited for teardown, I wanna see the guts of that little stick and see if there's a way to throw a gate in there, though I'm guessing not. If you get the pad I wanna see inside that too.
I’m trying to find one now, got a few people helping out but it looks like they made less pads then consoles LOL.
ETA PRIME I'm mostly curious if the pad has the same switches as the originals.
Same here. Going to check for your channel this weekend. I can’t wait to see the battery mod.
Metal Slug 2 has slow down because of how compress the game was. They released Metal Slug X which is an upgrade version of MS2 and that has no slow down.
I highly reccomend Garou Mark of The Wolves. It's one of the best SNK games, and probably in my top 10 fighting games.
Great video, hope to get my hands on the international version
Does this have bilinear filtration on the games? Kind of looked like it when you went from the menu to the in game. Bummer if so
Thank goodness the emulation is good on this thing! Take that, Neo Geo X! USB-C for power? I can play this in the car using my Nintendo Switch’s car adaptor! $80 for a controller? Let’s hope there are other USB-C pads we can use...
Great video man,👍🏼🎮
Ok after watching your video I am definitely getting one!!!! :)
I love it, been playing it all day.
Yes the shadows blink in almost all KOF/Garou Mark Of The Wolve games.
As marquee use the one that you prefer! This tiny machine seems realy good, i will buy it when will be available in Europe definitively!
I wonder if this could be modded into a full scale system (MVS Cabinet size) with this hardware and just a different monitor
