@eta prime - The flickering shadows are output by the real hardware, but on a real CRT arcade monitor, the flickering is not noticeable and is a an old coding 'cheat' to get a semi-transparent shadow (due to phosphor persistence)

you are not wrong, in theory that was what they tried to achieve, but in reality it doesn't work and you see a blinking shadow.

True - though somehow it looks less harsh than on an LCD, perhaps because of phosphor afterglow. Or it could be my nostalgia!
For people saying it looks kiddie or a toy little do they know that 1) there is a alternate color for the international release and 2) it replicates the color and design of NEOGEO Arcade cabinets in japan.
Oh man, don't ever show these people what game centers look like. They'd be horrified if they saw a blast city cab. :D

Ryuujin1078, plus, as you probably know, we used to have these back in the day. Little arcade replica units, they were so cool, and very popular before home consoles became mainstream.
Yes, the blinking shadows are accurate. They did this in many old games to get around the fact that they couldn't do transparencies. They would just flicker the shadow sprite on and off quickly.

I purchased both Japanese and International version. I love both of them, but I’m a little more partial to the colorful Japanese one.
I usually complain about lack of a digital pad but in this case it's a non issue
Nobody is going to be playing their best on the built in controls regardless because of the position & size, I definitely want one but I'd play with a pad :) to me the in built controls are a nice novelty
+ETA Prime, The NEOGEO was a sprite- and color powerhouse but didn't support alpha transparency like the SNES. It was very common to disable a sprite every odd frame to give the illusion of 50% transparency, It became somewhat of a visual trademark of the platform. :) During that time artists used a lot of clever techniques to go around limitations, this is one of them. The reason why NEO GEO often stuck with this technique was due to acade cabinets used CRT-monitors and pixels didn't blur like on RF or RCA compatible home televisions. The Mega Drive on the other hand used a lot of raster patterns, both to create transparency (waterfalls in Sonic), as well as adding more colors (backgrounds in Lion King... which looks like stripes during emulation, but on a TV it looked like extra colors). Sonic used both raster, odd/even sprite technique (for the shield powerup), as well as scanline palette swap (to create underwater sections), It's really cool to be honest, they created transparency by shifting the palette of the game after a certain scanline was drawn on-screen). :)

Also I believe the mini cabinet looks better without the joystick sticker.
The slow down was always there for Metal Slug 2 on all platforms it has been released. SNK later released Metal Slug X which is an update of 2 but improved with new gameplay features and no slow down.
10:25 Metal Slug 2 was the worst offender in the series when it comes to slowdown. They "fixed" it by releasing Metal Slug X which is sort of a "remix" of Metal Slug 2. X and 3 are my favorite entries in the series.
I wish there was nearest neighbor interpolation and integer scaling. It looks incredibly blurry to me on the HDMI output.
Yes it looks like shit. Mine came last week. I do not want to play it with HDMI. It's absolutely awful!
I am considering modding this for my car. The 3.5" screen is very high quality and worth the $100. If I can separate the screen and fit it in my console and run the HDMI to the dual screens in the back and have access to the USB controller input it would be a great and affordable travel syatem.
Definitely go with the joystick and buttons sticker, this unit is made to resemble a special MVS machine only released in Japan.

Instead of drilling holes in that Neo Geo try induction charging then it could charge while playing if left on the induction pad.
Some Asian arcades and the console had issues with the shadow but the American version work just fine.

Hey ETA, the shadows do appear the same way on the original arcades. The reason why is because the Neo Geo hardware doesn’t support alpha effects (transparency) so the trick here is to have a solid shadow flickering quickly to give the impression of transparency (a very old trick during the 8-16bit era). It’s just more noticeable on non-CRT displays since they work refresh differently. You can briefly see the solid silhouette hanging for longer when you KO the computer :)

I loved when you were saying the KOF game titles, it sounded like a rap. LOL. Also Metal Slug 2 lags alot regardless of anything, Metal Slug X fixed majority of the slow downs.
KoF '98 & KoF '02 are some of the best, stick with playing those!

Dbn Poldermans I know! Their 8 way, clicky, micro switch joy stick is one of the brand's definitive features. It blows my mind they went with analog.
Way to subtly insinuate that anyone else who does get it is beneath your personal taste. That wasn't assholish at all or anything.
The shadows in KOF should flicker very quickly to give them a translucent effect. I don't think it's ever properly emulated.

KOF beats every SF except the Alpha series. Alpha reigns supreme.
Absolutely stoked that both the Last Blades are included. I always thought they were superior to Samurai Showdown.
I am surprised they didn't include any of the more esoteric (but still well known) titles; e.g. 'Nam1975, Magician Lord, Waku Waku 7..

I am so surprised that you don't like KOF, it has more elaborate combos and moving parts vs the SF series.
I used the play KOF 2002 competitively back in mexico and let me tell you that SF was not even considered a "skill" fighting game.
MVC 1 and MVC 2 were considered just because of the button combinations and character assists
SF is too slow especially modern SF. Alpha series were fast especially 3.
I highly reccomend Garou Mark of The Wolves. It's one of the best SNK games, and probably in my top 10 fighting games.
I can imagine my self raging on the last blade 2 and snapping that tiny little joy stick in half.

One funny thing you mentioned is that you don’t like KOF as much & the Japanese version is focused on “fighter games” while the International version is focused on “shooters” again thanks a lot!

It looks nice, though smaller than expected. I like how they have the controller/expansion ports on the side where they don't interfere with the 'clean' look of the front. Of the 2 marquee stickers, the 4-slot style matches the old arcade look more, though maybe if the other one didn't have the white face, if it just had the logo in the center I'd probably go with it.
ETA Prime, would you PLEASE do a tutorial video on how to add more Neo Geo ROMs to the International version of the Neo Geo Mini? I think there is a video on how to do this on TH-cam but it is in a foreign language and I was hoping you'd make a video most anyone can understand, like you always do?! Thanks!
A bit pricey but it's pretty cool looking. I knew that this would be more expensive because of the build, I hope they make a legit mini version for like $100 in the future.

Hence why I mainly collect for the 360, PS3 era and back. A time in which you got to keep your games and not have to be online or download to your hard drive before being able to play, shout it from the rooftops LMAO.

I'm still hoping that the controllers use a standard input method so they will work on a computer. If not I do have a Neo Geo CD pad that SNK released for the PS3.
Yes the shadows blink in almost all KOF/Garou Mark Of The Wolve games.
without optimization it ran a lot smoother which I guess makes sense cause it will use cpu power too.

If you get slowdowns on your Recalbox/RetroPi while playing Neo Geo games, just overclock Retroarch emulator to max (200) in the Retroarch menu. After that games like Metal Slug 2 run perfectly.
Overclocking the Pi 2/3 CPU is not necessary...
I like the Neo GEO Mini idea, but Recalbox with retro-shader on is the way to go for Neo Geo games. Perfect retro-style graphics on modern displays, huge arcade controller support list, Unibios and of course no slowdowns after tuning.
So there is no need to hack it....
SNES Mini hacking is better because you have the very low inputlag if you leave the original emulation software on it(just +25ms than original hardware). And of course high quality replica SNES controllers!
I made a mini bartop arcade in wood with laptop and its looks much better like this plastic design without imagination
Hey ETA, great review! I am a huge neo geo fan but Those retropie options have an annoying input lag sensation. Did you feel any input lag using neo geo mini’s HDMI output ?
At 13:44, the cloud disappearing like that on the left side of the screen got to be an emulation bug. It does not behave like that when I play Blazing Star on the Nintendo Switch. :(

I'm pretty sure that ants are not to the scale of this. If you were TRYING to go for "clever", the least you could have done is said "mouse" or "rat" or "pet Iguana". But I don't think you would have had the mental capacity to come up with that.

Well it uses USB type C connectors so it SEEMS possible. You can certainly get adapters. I buy packs of 5 on Wish for super cheap all the time. Sometimes I give them out as stocking stuffers just because everyone who has a modern Android phone is so pissed about having to buy new cables and peripherals.

SHADOWS: I'm gonna guess it's related to the loss of CRT scanlines.
Nah, this was due to difficulty in achieving real transparency in those days. What is going on with the shadows here is a transparency-like effect by just turning the solid shadow on/off rapidly which is far less taxing on the hardware. The SNES had the ability to do real (or at least more convincing) transparencies, but most other systems did not.

I watched a doco on Metal Slug or a vid a guy made on Metal Slug and I didn't realise theres part xx and part 7 too. You can get it on PSP, DS, Xbox and PS4. It blew me away being a Metal Slug fan too. Just thought I'd mention it if u didn't know although u probably do know. Def keen to play them. Can't wait to see the cpu and if you can fit more games on this mini :)

It's pretty cool device, but I believe snk should add other games as ms4 that mentioned above from eta and not all king of fighters series. There are lot of great games on neo geo that should be at the system
They should have just made a little console and included two new wired neo geo replica controllers. I didn’t get one of these because I’ve got a lot of these games on my Switch and honestly this looks kinda dumb to me.
