The Spyderco Yojimbo 2 Pocketknife: The Full Nick Shabazz Review

  • The Spyderco Yojimbo 2 is designed for self defense by Michael Janich, but I'm going to review it today as a basic tool for EDC. Although there are compromises in the name of "weapon", it's not a bad knife for EDC.
So, if you're trained in the arts of the blade (unlike, well, pretty much everybody) and need an EDC knife too, the Yojimbo 2 is a great choice. But if you're just a random jackass looking for an EDC, you might look elsewhere and get less compromise in a smaller package.

The loser of a knife fight dies on the street. The winner dies at the hospital. I Love mine. It is so Odd. All the negatives Nick mentions are what make mine so cool. Totally impractical, but it feels special to hold such a deadly tool in my hand while watching Wheel of Fortune on the couch with my wife. Comparing this knife to an E.D.C. for regular use is like comparing a pick-up truck to a Corvette.

When reaching into your pocket, your hand will slide along the back of the handle. The only way that your hand would slide off of the spine of the blade is if: 1 You have it set up for a lefthanded person and carry it in your front right pocket or 2 You have it set up for a righthanded person and carry it in your front left pocket.

The PM2 and the YJ2 both have the compression lock and similar blade stock..but the YJ, when u compare random examples, tends to have more of a glassy action ..I think the extra weight at the spine just gives the blade more momentum...but it also feels like there is a better level of finishing on the interior parts...and the detent, you can feel the detent ball tension while the blade drops shut as well...but it’s very smooth
Are there any stinkers out there?....or

Nick always brings the goods. Glad to see an EDC-focused review on the Yojimbo.
Something else that makes me lean away from the Yojimbo 2 is the fact that it IS designed as a weapon. That would be much harder to defend in court, no matter how scary the other ninja is.

  • @johnskibler

My GF just bought me one of these for my birthday after hearing me once saying I wanted one to match my fixed blade Ronin. In my excitement I had to go back and look at reviews I watched years ago. It's a piece I have had in my cart many times over the past few years but never pressed the button on. Aside from being the coolest BD present I ever got, I have to say I really dig the knife. I am not a stabbing professional either but it certainly does look competent for the role, much like my Ronin which lives in my home office work desk and has had a long career of opening envelopes and boxes. So far it is more impressive to non knife enthusiasts in a "bad ass" sort of way, than my Benchmade Fact, PM2, or anything else I got so there's that.

12:07 I actually do like kerambit/hawkbill shapes for a lot of EDC stuff. Opening packages of any kind is ridiculously easy with one. It has a lot of the same advantages and trade offs as a wharncliffe, but exaggerated. I imagine blade geometry as a continuum with drop point and Persian on one end (convex edge/points back), hawkbill at the other (concave edge/points forward) and wharncliffe in the middle (straight edge).

This is an interesting knife. If it didn't have the weapon compromises you pointed out I'm sure it would be an even better EDC'er as it has a utility feel to it. Oh and it just makes me or so happy to see that Razel make a few cameos!!!!

Hilarious and informative as always! Thank you Nick. As to the self-defense comments I agree and if I was going to use a knife for self-defense it'd be my K-Bar fixed blade I took home when I got out of the USMC. For self-defense I carry a firearm and OC spray instead. Folders are great for task not so much for self-defense. If a person is serious about self-defense with a knife it most always benefit them to use a fixed blade.

      @cjanquart 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Agreed, however in CA (specifically southern CA) it's nigh-impossible to get a CCW (Ventura and Orange counties are getting better) and fixed blades are problematic (must carry openly and can't be carried at schools or federal buildings) so most folders 4" or less are safe.

5:45 Nick, the way you are describing carrying this knife in the pocket would suggest that you carry it against the left seam of the right front pocket... Why would you do this??? You are always best to carry tip-up so the blade of the knife abutts the seam of the pocket... So this means that if you were to be carrying the knife in the right-front pocket of your jeans in a tip up configuration, you would carry the knife on the right side of the pocket (closest to your right side of your body.) You should carry the knife abutting the left seam (closest to your groin) this is bad.

I really love my Yojimbo 2, and I carry it alongside my MKM Voxnaes Isonzo clip point. I live in a really, really bad area, so I usually carry my Yojimbo 2 when I have to walk somewhere. My neighborhood is so bad, my rain gutters were ripped off to be scrapped by thieves. lol. So the Yojimbo 2 is very viable in my life.

Rides nicely? Man the yo was probably my least favorite in pocket ive had thus far (in my child sized jeans). I justify the superleaf by saying at least it is better than the yo lol.
I do also agree that the s30v on both yos i had was SUPER chippy

I got this knife and was shocked how good it works in edc. It really does..busting up boxes all kinds of stuff.

That knife is fantastic. It is a "specialty"...It doesn't do everything like a PM2 might. It ain't about that. I had Yojimbo2 engraved on it, in "Edwardian Script" and replaced the silver clip with a black one from a Manix. The lock and free-swinging blade make it a Joy to fondle. Plus it's so ugly, it's pretty. Just buy it. YES...the tip is needle-like and delicate SO = don't break it.

Easy to conceal a folding knife but not easy to conceal my hand-built Samurai Katana, In England were not allowed a flipper knife we can't carry any knife with a locking blade, all we can carry is sub 3inch counting the tang then you have to have a good reason. The Yojimbo is a Great knife I have this one and the blacked out one, the Canis is a Great knife too

I don't agree with you on blade length being too long and I do not agree with you on having a full flat grind instead of the Hollow Grind. Other than that like the review.

This is my favorite Spyderco knife of mine. It’s not my favorite every day carry, that goes to my maxamet para 3. This is my favorite unique, self defense, fidget spinner. It’s definitely not a utility knife. The tip breaks too easy. If you watch the video about Michael Janic, he explains why it’s designed how it is. It’s pretty interesting. Long story short… It’s mainly my backup to my 9 millimeter pewdiepew.

I agree with your review. I gave mine to my boss and he runs a ebay store and uses it alot. He is not a knife guy like us, but he likes having a nice knife. He loves it and it stays sharp for a long time.

By the way....when the knife is in your pocket the blade width doesn't "GUIDE" your hand down to allow you to grab your wallet or phone or whatever....right handed tip-up position (how you have yours in this video) would mean the blade is up against the seem of the pocket.....making it harder, not easier, to grab said item from your pocket. Just had to correct you on that mistake. Overall i think this knife is a little much & feel like if you have one you are obviously over compensating for the lack of balls....

I love your reviews as they are very informative. With that said please bear in mind that both Yojimbo knives were designed strictly as self defense weapons, not as an edc knife for every day tasks.

Damn it Nick! Why must you be the Voice of Reason all the time! I (like you) have been on the fence for years with the Yo2. I love wharnies and sheepsfoots (sheepfeet?). I was hoping to be wooed by your review, but great minds think alike and you have "Nickpicked" me out of another knife I would have let sit in my drawer and not in my pocket. I love you and hate you for it. Keep it up and never do it again.
