I had forgotten how INSANE this record was. Like the opening and closing tracks are great but they seem like they belong to two completely different albums!
My favorite part in the record is the transition between Bungalow Bill and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. It's that mix between frivolous and serious that gives the album that crazy avant-garde unexpected feel while also been super pleasant, fun and accessible.
There are so many genres in this record, surf music with Back in the USSR, country/western with Rocky Raccoon and Don’t Pass me By, blues rock with Yer Blues, heavy metal with shelter Skelter, lullabies with Good Night. It’s what makes the album so good.
Thank you for stating how I’ve always felt regarding that transition! It’s like a door gets slammed shut in the midst of that happening and we’re swiftly whisked into “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”.

I thought they did a great job on this. Glass Onion and While My Guitar Gently Weeps really stood out for me. The only one that didn't impress me was Helter Skelter. It just doesn't sound as raw and hard hitting as the original. I'm also annoyed that they didn't include the 27-minute long version of Helter Skelter, but the 12-minute alternate take kind of makes up for it.

The "god awful" recording of Everybody's got something to hide except me and my monkey is really not bad at all when you really listen to what theyre doing. Theyre learning the song, theyre getting a feel for it so they can go in to record a real take. So while george is really all over the place in this recording, you can hear him start to piece together what he's going to add to the track. At the end you can hear him attempt something close to the post chorus guitar lick, its just a really cool way to see their creative process in action.

I grew up with them, already a mid-teen in 1964. My favorites are "Beatles for Sale" and this LP.
I think this album is their best also. Because the "flaws" make it their most interesting record in addition to the many outstanding songs on here. It's also filled with many underrated tracks
I just can’t describe why this album is so special, it hits everywhere you need it.

This album means alot to me, and is one of my favorites of all time. It's refreshing to see a remaster/remix that isn't a total cash grab and actually adds something to the album.

I would love more Beatles content from you, such as your opinion on The Beatles being someone’s favorite band, if they are overrated, or even album reviews. I know you have said you don’t see the point in reviewing music universally appraised, but i respect your opinion and would enjoy your take on the Beatles catalogue.
They´ve been pretty on point with these new mixes. the new Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was also much better than the original in my opinion.
I used to think Lovely Rita was one of the most annoying songs ever written but that remix saved it. Kinda the same thing with Obladi Oblada on this one.
@Colby S No idea if he has. Also I was thinking the same thing about Let it be, as it's probably the one I think has more room for improvement. Will totally be checking Abbey Road too though.
Gotta disagree. Squashed, tone-less bass, weird panning.. I appreciate what Giles is trying to do and I do want to see these albums remixed. But there are engineers out there currently mixing other classic albums that would do a much better job. These remixes don't breathe, they sound unnatural.

@@theretrogamer14 Naked is actually my preferred way to listen to Let It Be too, but I still think that you could do something with the official release where it keeps some of the studio trickery Beatles are known for, without seeming as sloppy and tacked on as it currently feels.
Thank you for the review - very concise and thorough. My teacher in fourth grade used to have us listen to two to three Beatles songs a day in the morning - a really keen start to our day. We also had the overhead projector out with transparencies of all the lyrics so we could sing along. Crazy to have seen a version of this in the film Yesterday. We also got our fair share of The Band as well. It was a real treat.

You need to listen to the old school mono lp to hear how the Beatles actually wanted it to sound. They didn't spend a lot of time on the stereo mixes back in 1968 because hardly anyone had stereo hifis.
I like some of the new mix especially in the 5.1 surround. Honey Pie doesn't sound as good as the old mix, it needs the old timey sound. They should have included the 1968 mono mixes with the 2018 deluxe release. I don't like the new Helter Skelter either. P.S. John plays bass on Helter Skelter..... I am disappointed they didn't include the original mono mix for comparison. The Velvet Underground include their mono mixes in the super deluxe re-release of their new remasters of their classic albums.

After listening to the first "half" of the Blu-Ray, I hear a GENTLE remix. Vocals, drums, and background are given some prominence -- all in all the clarity is improved.
At one point in time I considered the White Album my all-time favorite album out of at least 3000 albums heard. I don't really think of albums in that way any more. But if I could only own one, I'd probably still go with it.

This perfectly illustrates the difference between me and Melon-Head here: his favorite Beatles album is the experimental but cluttered and uneven White Album; and my favorite tends to jump between the grandiose and solid Abbey Road and the widely-experimental but still cohesive Revolver.
My only problem of this mix is Helter Skelter, they turned down the bass and Ringo at the end and those two aspects really made the song for me.

I really, really loved the treatment to Mother Nature's Son.
I'm not usually a fan of augmenting old records like this, but they did a heck of a job on the White Album. It was almost like listening to it for the first time again.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps is a contender for greatest song of all time, I love it to death.
IMO this album is so good it has multiple contenders for best song of all time, Helter Skelter, Dear Prudence, Julia, Blackbird, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Martha My Dear, etc.

I completely agree about the Helter Skelter mix. It needs to feel heavy, sloppy, dirty. I feel the new mix sounds too clean and sharp to my ears. Also it was John on bass for that one.

I'm glad I bought the 2018 remix of The White Album, but there definitely are pros and cons to it in comparison to the previous CD mix. It's been a long time since I've listened to my dad's 1968 vinyl copy, so I can't compare it to that yet, but I plan on doing that eventually. There are a lot of things on the 2018 mix that I do think sound improved, but there are other things that are not as loud and prominent as they were in the previous mix. I'm not yet done making my track-by-track comparisons, but one example is at the end of Helter Skelter when Ringo yells "I've got blisters on my fingers!" In the original mix, that yell is loud and right in your ears, but on the 2018 mix, it's much more quiet as if you're standing way down a long hallway and hearing somebody yelling from a room at the other end. Overall, I think the 2018 mix is still worth getting, but as with last year's Sgt. Pepper, I'm going to have to make some personal modifications to the mixes to restore sounds that were lost or softened (or in some cases, too blatant).

Agree on the Helter Skelter remix. They reduced the bass. About Rev9, I don't think Revolution 9 was remixed. Maybe it had some eq adjustments on the new album. There's no way they could really attack a remix of that song because of the live one take performance of it originally. The mono LP is even a fold down reduction of that song.

Listen to the Quad/5.1 mixes of any Pink Floyd albums you can! The albums were originally recorded in Surround sound and the usual stereo mixes everyone hears are dry and deader because they're missing some instruments and nuances they were intended to have. You don't even need a Surround setup if you down mix them using today's technology to stereo. It's what I did, and now I never wanna go back to the old Stereo mixes

Great review! I think that it’s important to note that until Abbey Road, the mono mixes were the only versions that the Beatles themselves had any artistic input in, and that the stereo mixes that so many of us grew up with on CD, tape, and vinyl were often created by junior engineers in a matter of hours after George Martin and the band had left the session.
