Here is a fun fact about Riquelme: in the 2006 World Cup match against Montenegro he completed 104 out of 105 passes, scoring a 99% accuracy in passes, he is the only player to have ever done it in the WC (with at least 100 pass attempts) .

When journalists asked about that last shot he answered "why on earth i would kick a center with such a strengh?" and he dropped the mic.

In Argentina we have had a generation that we consider that Riquelme is the best player in history
Furthermore, he is the greatest idol in the history of Boca Juniors and Villareal of Spain.
He is as great as he is an idol of Boca that the Bombonera herself chose him over Maradona and Messi

"Anyone can run, playing soccer is something else." Quote from Menotti, technical director of Argentina champion in 1978. Riquelme did not need to run and get 8 players off him, because the ball is faster than any player. I saw the gap to make the pass and for the play to end in a goal. And yes, Riquelme was a player with innate talent, the vision of the play is learned as a child playing. More so in Argentina where we grew up playing anywhere we could. Greetings.

    Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim.
    Assalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh to Muslim.
    Good day to Others.
    With Riquelme,
you can put him as a playmaker with 10 lesser known players
who are above average in 1 team.
Most likely, this team will give a very, very difficult time to the best team in the world.
That is one of the unique thing about him.
    A slow player,
    but a very deadly one.
    Wallahu a'lam.

guy has played against great teams, he left Europe because he'd rather play in Boca, not because his level dropped. And yes there are still players like Romy, just getting harder to find th-cam.com/video/bNTN03qdYHY/w-d-xo.html

With all due respect the Somali brother is mistaken about it being easier before, it's easier today! The other guy is right, players were better back in the 90s and 2000's.

I agree with the talent thing, context matters. There was more space to play in back then, they weren't pressing like all these teams do nowadays. Forwards are expected to defend from the front now, it wasn't always like that.
I think the talent has grown for sure & the science. There's only less flair cos systems nowadays allow for less but there's much more technical ability.

Your right the games faster and players are pressing more. But the question remains, how effective is pressing against technical players of the past with great ball control and skill. The answer is they strive under pressure. Also how long does pressing last? Do players ever get tired? Players like Roman 10,a magestic player who could control the tempo of games, know when to speed it up or slow it down to walking pace, pull it back or pull it forward. These technical and intelligent players don't exist anymore which is why pressing is dominating today. The game is lacking of naturally talented players with the 10 position extinct, the number 9 position is almost extinct its only going to get worse.
Has the quality of football in terms of naturally gifted technical skillfull and intelligent players diminished?
In other words is the game not enjoyable compared to when Ronaldo Nazario, Pele, Roman Riquelme, Zidane, Maradona, Zico, Cruyff, Ronaldinho etc... Played. What have all these top players got in common? Naturally gifted footballers with high intelligence, skill and very high technique. The achillies heel for physically fast and strong players with limited technique is naturally gifted footballers with high football intelligence and high technical ability etc..
