This is so cerebrally organic. It's a flash of insight. I wasted tons of cash on Mel Bay and that Alfred guy buying manuals, books, CD's, etc. Your color-coded chart is so good. You discovered pentatonics from the inside out. I knew the five positions of the scales and felt my job was to "connect them." Your system says to just play them. Wonderful! Best of all is your comment that if you don't like playing something, or it's no fun, forget it. You won't learn it anyway. Right on! No more cycle of fifths or fourths or whatever the heck. I have great difficulty memorizing licks, much as I might want to and have forced some of them. More of you. Although it's counter-intuitive to what you do, anything in manual or written form, working off your color chart would be an immediate sell. Rather make you wealthy than Mel Bay.

Iv been playing for 40 years .. my mind works different than most people and for some reason I connect with your explanation of this.. most of the riffs, method, theory or whatever you want to call it was really just memorizing and playing same thing a thousand times BUT this I can see clear as day!! Thank you so much for this Dave. I know its not recent, but for me it is! Let me explain. A few years ago I packed my guitars and amps away & put them into storage in France, where I used to live. The reason for me to have packed it all away and stop playing was my cancer and its treatment was totally debilitating for me as I was still running my business as well. 15 months ago I finally retired and moved to Spain. The weather is obviously suiting me as I have been feeling better each day. During the lockdown here, which by the way is a lot stricter than here, (no going for walks etc), I discovered your music here on TH-cam. Your skill and your enthusiasm, together with both your ability to play things I really enjoy and your great presentational skills has prompted me to start playing again. So, I'm arranging for a couple of guitars and my favourite amp to be delivered to me from France. I'm not a good player, and I'm not like red wine, (which I love BTW) , I will not improve with age, but you've inspired me to start again, at the rather advanced age of 70. My love of music goes back to my childhood, my father was a singer with a big band and I cut my teeth in the mid 1960's at the Marquee in Soho. I'm writing this here as I've never seen anything like this video ever before, and I'll be using it shamelessly when my gear arrives. Thank you so much Dave, due to you I feel young again, Alexis Korner got me hooked on the guitar, and now you have lit the flame again. I owe you big time. .

I've known unlocking the neck is the key to great playing, and I've watched a few "expert" vids on yt...but it just seemed so complex. The way you have done this here seems to make much more sense.....I've always wanted to be able to play across the neck,because just going up an down has made me fall into a bit of a rut. It's going to take time but I really think you've given me one of the best presents ever in this vid so MASSIVE thanks for doing this for us all Dave :)

Dave thank you so much for showing us this. I’ve been playing guitar now for several years and can get by reading guitar tab books; but wanting to learn more I have just started, 3 weeks ago, learning scales along with my buddy. We learned that ‘#’ sharps go down the neck (nut to bridge) and ‘b’ flats go up the neck (bridge to nut), that there is no B ‘#’ sharps or E ‘#’ sharps and there are no C’b’ flats or F ‘b’ flats. Once you know this you can work out where all the notes are. So once you know from the nut to the 12th you also know from the 12th. I know it might sound basic, but if you don’t know, and if you’ve never had a lesson, these can be revelations. So thanks Dave, this lesson came just at the right time and was clear to understand.
its now 2yrs since I watched this video and started playing according to this. Probably the most valuable lesson ever for me. I now see the chord shapes inside the scales. It has undramatized the whole scale and modes thing for me.
Thanks for the lesion Dave. I learned he first 3 positions, practiced them and then learnt the next two, practiced the whole neck up and down and then I've just learned all the added notes in all position's tonight and will practice them for a week then work out past the 12th fret. I have ADHD and can never follow lessons on scales well but you've managed to speak my language and get this all in my head in one video, well done man you're an absolute godsend.

I really cannot express how helpful these tutorial videos are, I've been playing guitar for years an I never bothered to learn anything past postion 1 and just did the rest by ear, now I've come back to playing again after 12 odd years, largely due to your videos sparking my interest again, I decided I want to know it all, I struggle to learn from books, but between books and your vids I'm learning so much more than I ever knew, but also realising I knew a lot without knowing if that makes sense. This is magnificent instruction. You have really cut through the minutia. I can learn all the notes of the 2 bottom strings along the way as I become adept at the 5 forms. Amazing.
This is a highly recommended video if you want to start playing solos / improvisations. I have trained this a year now. Easily the tutorial that has helped me most understanding how to approach soloing. Make sure you watch the last minutes where Dave goes through his neck schematic!

This video was very clear and I was able to screen shot your charts. I made sure I was comfortable with the basic minor pentatonic forms before really digging into this one. I had no problem understanding or following you. I'm going to make my own hand copy of those charts, it's a good way to learn. Thanks for taking so much of the mystery out of guitar playing 🙏‼️
I've recently learned the aeolian and mixolydian modes and what I find from the diagram is that it's in fact an E Aeolian mode with the added blue notes. The diagram is only missing one note on the 21st fret of the A string. But all in all a great video, I learned quite a bit from it.
I was also wondering about that fret as well since the purple sections should have the same notes. Thanks for spotting this. Also thanks to Dave on providing insight on his years of playing and the tools he uses.
This has to be one of the best. if not. THE Best lessone I have ever seen and I believe it is really the MOST RELEVANT of all to guitar playing proficiency yet it is so "simple" but then therein lies its truly practical Genius.

I stalled out a few years ago and as much as I love the sound of the guitar, I became "stagnant" and have all but quit trying. I discovered your videos this week and they have breathed new life in my desire to play guitar again! Your passionate, soulful playing, informative videos and excellant teaching have given me hope... and motivation to once again pick up my beloved guitars. Have always been a Les Paul/SG guy but see myself getting an "S" style guitar very soon. . This is a brilliant video, Dave. What you did totally makes sense and the pace is perfect (even you interrupting yourself gave useful time to assimilate the information). I transferred the coloured diagram into The Gig Bag Book Of Guitar Complete and added notes. You covered an awful lot of ground. There are so many jumping off points for individual video lessons and explorations. You could bring some of this (visually) into your 'How To Play Like' videos - using a little white/wipe board you could show neck work visually. Thanks Dave ❤ .
Dave, this lesson should be titled everything you need to make sense of the fretboard. I am fairly familiar with this stuff, but for less experienced players you’ve given them the tools to leap ahead massively here.

Charlie. hi I`ve seen Rory Gallagher live at every Glasgow Apollo concert and muddy Waters with Clapton in the 70s it was great. I have bitten the bullet to learn electric guitar, played acoustic for years using harmonica with harness for solos . didn`t realise how geeky electric guitar can get with gear and technic. I wish I`d had a video like this when I started playing 40 years ago. I spent years figuring this out on beer mats and much banging of head against the wall. I eventualy got there using modes ie pos. 1=aeolian 2= ionian 3=dorian etc etc. but as far as I am concerned THIS IS ALL YOU NEED KIDS. The ghost of the GREAT Rory Gallagher awaits you and consider the gates to the kingdom truly unlocked, Well done David !!!

I just want to say Dave that you’ve helped me a great, great deal with my guitar playing and understanding, and one of the main things you do that helps me is that, you tell it how it is. There are so many “trendy” guitar TH-cam channels and I’ve learned a lot from them don’t get me wrong, but I feel they withhold information or try to tell you that you need to know all the theory to be able to express yourself on the guitar and this is totally not true(maybe a way to plug you to their pateron). Some of the things you say off the cuff are what have helped me most; in one of your Rory Gallagher videos you said “your not going to sound like Rory...” just that alone I thought “you know Daves right, I won’t sound exactly like my hero’s and they couldn’t possibly sound like me” just you saying that released me from a mental block and now I’m making progress like pfff it’s unreal I’m sooo happy, I’m making my own music left right and centre now, it won’t stop pouring out of me. In this video you just mentioned how ‘you don’t know the modes and that you just know what sounds good’. I don’t know the modes either but I know I play modes in my soloing and for a long time I thought “man I need to know these modes I’m playing and label them because the TH-cam theorists are saying that’s what I gotta know to be great at guitar” and this is totally not true. What you say around your guitar teaching in the videos has helped me as greatly as the thing you are teaching itself. I believe this to be because you’re a musician where as most teachers are just theorists(probably why a lot of them lack soul in their playing). Didn’t mean to essay you here 😅 But man I love your stuff. I’d definitely pay for lessons with you if something like this is possible.
Hi Dave, today its a first time i came across your videos. I've seen this one and the one where you share what you know from theory. Just want to thank you for being so open about sharing your entire system (of fretboard...theory...) in the closest detail. I think its very brave and also useful for another players. I am just in a phase of "building" my own guitar fretboard (and kind of music in general) "navigation" system which although not exactly like yours , shares a lot of similar features and concepts (shapes...). Therefore I found some really helpful tips here that I can integrate. Many thanks!
This video has helped me so much. As i am self taught and do not have much music theory this has really opened up some doors and new sounds for my playing. Wish i had time to put in hours of practice. I enjoy playing alot johns acoustic songs and playing chords. Love playing chord progressions

I've been kind of doing this for the last 20 years or so without actually realising it! When I saw the diagram at the end it was so odd seeing a picture of how I see the fretboard when It comes to improv. Such an excellent teacher is Sir Dave 👍🏻

ive been playing by myself and in bands (entirely self 'taught') for 10 years and I barely know the pentatonic (that i learned by ear) haha. i only really learn by watching people and rewinding videos or randomly my brain works it out; whether i have a guitar with me at the time or not, strangely. i have to 'digest' it. ultimately my hands move and notes come out. any theory makes my brain hurt! I have my own bizzaro terms in my head and my own crutches that make sense to me and i fit new things around. but this video helps a lot! i can actually see what you're doing! thanks a lot dave! Al
Alright Dave, excellent stuff mate. I'm a beginner who knew nothing about scales. After watching once, I didn't really understand, but I kinda got it. I took photo of your diagram on my phone. Watched it again. Then tonight I was looking at diagram and had light bulb moment and seen where and how's scales connected and got it, how you can move between. God now I'm gonna learn them for sure. Cheers mate, great stuff yeaaaa.
Dave this was a great video, it really helped me! Two things I did to further reinforce this that I would recommend to anyone still learning these is I put a strip of blue painters tape across my fret board (and all the way around the neck) between the 12th and 13th fret... and I have a screenshot of your diagram in front of me. Kicked on a 80'ish BMP drum track and away I went. My thought was I am going to spend some time and play strictly the E minor scale and via the first octave / 12 frets... I only spent one evening doing this for a few hours, and by isolating myself to one scale and octave range, it cuts the neck in 1/2 and I am now only dealing with those five shapes of the minor pentatonic scale. Yes the 13+ frets are the same, but just cutting it down visually in 1/2 really helped my brain solidify those shapes to memory. The tape does two things, one a visual indicator / reminder to stay on the lower half of the neck... and two, I can feel the tape on the back of the neck... confirming where I am. Within an hour or two of doing this while just watching YT I already learned all five shapes and can move in between them with relative ease. As I got more comfortable, I am trying not to look at the neck at all. I feel both the notes and my hand hitting that tape around the neck which gives me a confirmation that I'm indeed where I think I am... it has worked extremely well for me as a practice tool and I will definitely only leave this tape on here for a week or so, but in the meantime it really helped me. Now that I am comfortable with the basic shapes, I can totally move them around to suit the root / key and away I go! I will forever remember this "ah-ha!" moment and have you to thank for it, so thanks for another great lesson / tutorial man!

This is so cerebrally organic. It's a flash of insight. I wasted tons of cash on Mel Bay and that Alfred guy buying manuals, books, CD's, etc. Your color-coded chart is so good. You discovered pentatonics from the inside out. I knew the five positions of the scales and felt my job was to "connect them." Your system says to just play them. Wonderful! Best of all is your comment that if you don't like playing something, or it's no fun, forget it. You won't learn it anyway. Right on! No more cycle of fifths or fourths or whatever the heck. I have great difficulty memorizing licks, much as I might want to and have forced some of them. More of you. Although it's counter-intuitive to what you do, anything in manual or written form, working off your color chart would be an immediate sell. Rather make you wealthy than Mel Bay.
Wow that was a brilliant lesson and explanation!! Iv been playing for 40 years .. my mind works different than most people and for some reason I connect with your explanation of this.. most of the riffs, method, theory or whatever you want to call it was really just memorizing and playing same thing a thousand times BUT this I can see clear as day!! I know its not recent, but for me it is! Let me explain. A few years ago I packed my guitars and amps away & put them into storage in France, where I used to live.
The reason for me to have packed it all away and stop playing was my cancer and its treatment was totally debilitating for me as I was still running my business as well.
15 months ago I finally retired and moved to Spain. The weather is obviously suiting me as I have been feeling better each day. During the lockdown here, which by the way is a lot stricter than here, (no going for walks etc), I discovered your music here on TH-cam. Your skill and your enthusiasm, together with both your ability to play things I really enjoy and your great presentational skills has prompted me to start playing again. So, I'm arranging for a couple of guitars and my favourite amp to be delivered to me from France.
I'm not a good player, and I'm not like red wine, (which I love BTW) , I will not improve with age, but you've inspired me to start again, at the rather advanced age of 70. My love of music goes back to my childhood, my father was a singer with a big band and I cut my teeth in the mid 1960's at the Marquee in Soho.
I'm writing this here as I've never seen anything like this video ever before, and I'll be using it shamelessly when my gear arrives.

I've known unlocking the neck is the key to great playing, and I've watched a few "expert" vids on yt...but it just seemed so complex. The way you have done this here seems to make much more sense.....I've always wanted to be able to play across the neck,because just going up an down has made me fall into a bit of a rut. Dave thank you so much for showing us this. I’ve been playing guitar now for several years and can get by reading guitar tab books; but wanting to learn more I have just started, 3 weeks ago, learning scales along with my buddy.
We learned that ‘#’ sharps go down the neck (nut to bridge) and ‘b’ flats go up the neck (bridge to nut), that there is no B ‘#’ sharps or E ‘#’ sharps and there are no C’b’ flats or F ‘b’ flats. Once you know this you can work out where all the notes are. So once you know from the nut to the 12th you also know from the 12th. I know it might sound basic, but if you don’t know, and if you’ve never had a lesson, these can be revelations.
So thanks Dave, this lesson came just at the right time and was clear to understand.

Thanks for the lesion Dave. I learned he first 3 positions, practiced them and then learnt the next two, practiced the whole neck up and down and then I've just learned all the added notes in all position's tonight and will practice them for a week then work out past the 12th fret. I have ADHD and can never follow lessons on scales well but you've managed to speak my language and get this all in my head in one video, well done man you're an absolute godsend.

I really cannot express how helpful these tutorial videos are, I've been playing guitar for years an I never bothered to learn anything past postion 1 and just did the rest by ear, now I've come back to playing again after 12 odd years, largely due to your videos sparking my interest again, I decided I want to know it all, I struggle to learn from books, but between books and your vids I'm learning so much more than I ever knew, but also realising I knew a lot without knowing if that makes sense. This video was very clear and I was able to screen shot your charts. I made sure I was comfortable with the basic minor pentatonic forms before really digging into this one. I've recently learned the aeolian and mixolydian modes and what I find from the diagram is that it's in fact an E Aeolian mode with the added blue notes. The diagram is only missing one note on the 21st fret of the A string. But all in all a great video, I learned quite a bit from it.
I was also wondering about that fret as well since the purple sections should have the same notes. Thanks for spotting this. Also thanks to Dave on providing insight on his years of playing and the tools he uses.
This has to be one of the best. if not. THE Best lessone I have ever seen and I believe it is really the MOST RELEVANT of all to guitar playing proficiency yet it is so "simple" but then therein lies its truly practical Genius.

Its not just the dots on the chart. Its how you explain it and present it with the colors and lines. makes it easier for me to se the relation between, pentatonic, minor, major, blues, and Dorian scales. This is so helpful.

I stalled out a few years ago and as much as I love the sound of the guitar, I became "stagnant" and have all but quit trying.

Have always been a Les Paul/SG guy but see myself getting an "S" style guitar very soon.

What you did totally makes sense and the pace is perfect (even you interrupting yourself gave useful time to assimilate the information).
I transferred the coloured diagram into The Gig Bag Book Of Guitar Complete and added notes.
You covered an awful lot of ground.
There are so many jumping off points for individual video lessons and explorations.
You could bring some of this (visually) into your 'How To Play Like' videos - using a little white/wipe board you could show neck work visually.

Dave, this lesson should be titled everything you need to make sense of the fretboard. I am fairly familiar with this stuff, but for less experienced players you’ve given them the tools to leap ahead massively here.

hi I`ve seen Rory Gallagher live at every Glasgow Apollo concert and muddy Waters with Clapton in the 70s it was great. I have bitten the bullet to learn electric guitar, played acoustic for years using harmonica with harness for solos . didn`t realise how geeky electric guitar can get with gear and technic. Why is the flat 5 marked for 1st and 2nd positions but not 3rd, 4th, 5th positions, but the 2 extra Gmaj scale notes are added to all positions?

I eventualy got there using modes ie pos. 1=aeolian 2= ionian 3=dorian etc etc. but as far as I am concerned THIS IS ALL YOU NEED KIDS. I just want to say Dave that you’ve helped me a great, great deal with my guitar playing and understanding, and one of the main things you do that helps me is that, you tell it how it is. There are so many “trendy” guitar TH-cam channels and I’ve learned a lot from them don’t get me wrong, but I feel they withhold information or try to tell you that you need to know all the theory to be able to express yourself on the guitar and this is totally not true(maybe a way to plug you to their pateron). Some of the things you say off the cuff are what have helped me most; in one of your Rory Gallagher videos you said “your not going to sound like Rory...” just that alone I thought “you know Daves right, I won’t sound exactly like my hero’s and they couldn’t possibly sound like me” just you saying that released me from a mental block and now I’m making progress like pfff it’s unreal I’m sooo happy, I’m making my own music left right and centre now, it won’t stop pouring out of me. In this video you just mentioned how ‘you don’t know the modes and that you just know what sounds good’. I don’t know the modes either but I know I play modes in my soloing and for a long time I thought “man I need to know these modes I’m playing and label them because the TH-cam theorists are saying that’s what I gotta know to be great at guitar” and this is totally not true. What you say around your guitar teaching in the videos has helped me as greatly as the thing you are teaching itself. I believe this to be because you’re a musician where as most teachers are just theorists(probably why a lot of them lack soul in their playing). Didn’t mean to essay you here 😅 But man I love your stuff. I’d definitely pay for lessons with you if something like this is possible.

Hi Dave, today its a first time i came across your videos. I've seen this one and the one where you share what you know from theory. Just want to thank you for being so open about sharing your entire system (of fretboard...theory...) in the closest detail. I think its very brave and also useful for another players. I am just in a phase of "building" my own guitar fretboard (and kind of music in general) "navigation" system which although not exactly like yours , shares a lot of similar features and concepts (shapes...). Therefore I found some really helpful tips here that I can integrate. Many thanks!
This video has helped me so much. As i am self taught and do not have much music theory this has really opened up some doors and new sounds for my playing. Wish i had time to put in hours of practice. I enjoy playing alot johns acoustic songs and playing chords. Love playing chord progressions

ive been playing by myself and in bands (entirely self 'taught') for 10 years and I barely know the pentatonic (that i learned by ear) haha. i only really learn by watching people and rewinding videos or randomly my brain works it out; whether i have a guitar with me at the time or not, strangely. i have to 'digest' it. ultimately my hands move and notes come out. any theory makes my brain hurt! I have my own bizzaro terms in my head and my own crutches that make sense to me and i fit new things around. but this video helps a lot! i can actually see what you're doing! thanks a lot dave! Al

Alright Dave, excellent stuff mate. I'm a beginner who knew nothing about scales. After watching once, I didn't really understand, but I kinda got it. I took photo of your diagram on my phone. Watched it again. Then tonight I was looking at diagram and had light bulb moment and seen where and how's scales connected and got it, how you can move between. God now I'm gonna learn them for sure. Cheers mate, great stuff yeaaaa.
Dave this was a great video, it really helped me! Two things I did to further reinforce this that I would recommend to anyone still learning these is I put a strip of blue painters tape across my fret board (and all the way around the neck) between the 12th and 13th fret... and I have a screenshot of your diagram in front of me. Kicked on a 80'ish BMP drum track and away I went.
My thought was I am going to spend some time and play strictly the E minor scale and via the first octave / 12 frets... I only spent one evening doing this for a few hours, and by isolating myself to one scale and octave range, it cuts the neck in 1/2 and I am now only dealing with those five shapes of the minor pentatonic scale. Yes the 13+ frets are the same, but just cutting it down visually in 1/2 really helped my brain solidify those shapes to memory.
The tape does two things, one a visual indicator / reminder to stay on the lower half of the neck... and two, I can feel the tape on the back of the neck... confirming where I am. Within an hour or two of doing this while just watching YT I already learned all five shapes and can move in between them with relative ease.
As I got more comfortable, I am trying not to look at the neck at all. I feel both the notes and my hand hitting that tape around the neck which gives me a confirmation that I'm indeed where I think I am... it has worked extremely well for me as a practice tool and I will definitely only leave this tape on here for a week or so, but in the meantime it really helped me.
Now that I am comfortable with the basic shapes, I can totally move them around to suit the root / key and away I go! I will forever remember this "ah-ha!" moment and have you to thank for it, so thanks for another great lesson / tutorial man!

It's not on your chart but it does work as a blues note in passing !.
