Apparently this is the most accurate ballroom dancing movie ever made, at least for competitive ballroom dancing - including repeated champions being alcoholics, sexual harassment happening (the hello sweetie bit), the fact that the Pascodoble dance in competitions is a far cry from the actual Spanish dance, and the absurd amount of rules about which steps are acceptable in competitions. And the fact that most competitive ballroom dancers have a day job as well.
Baz Luhrmann's mum it turns out taught ballroom dancing so he had insider information about which specific steps were acceptable and which weren't - mostly over which steps allows you to lift your partner off the ground and which don't.
I've loved this one for years--and I think it started the craze for the tv shows--Strictly Come Dancing in the UK and then Dancing with the Stars in the US. Thanks for choosing this one!
There was a gap of at least 15 years before the two tv shows you mentioned came on.....this is a great stand-alone dance movie, the two principals were great in it.
Thank you for correcting my misunderstanding of this! Don't know where I got my info but obviously wrong!! It is a wonderful movie--perhaps I only ran across it shortly before the tv shows. I will take down or revise my post soon so as not to confuse others. Thanks!

There was a BBC show called ‘Come Dancing’ from the 1950’s, ‘Strictly’ took its name from that series and this film.
Yes, it is my understanding that Paul Mercurio (Scott) was a professional ballet dancer --not ballroom. Your reaction and insights were so good. Thank you again for fulfilling the Patron's request. It was a good one!
He was a modern dancer. Amazing acting from a non actor.
The humour in this movie is so uniquely Australian and I love it! Such a wonderful, and also strangely accurate, movie 😅
The Castle is another great Aussie movie!
The, due to commitments to his landscape gardening business line is definitely in the same vein of comedy as The Castle 😂
I adore this film. Was obsessed with this when I was I child.
A great Aussie film!
So glad this very underrated movie is getting a revival!
This film came out when I was a flamenco dancer and we absolutely loved it the Pasodoble scene!
Welcome to Baz Luhrmann's 'Red Curtain Trilogy', called so because each movie reflects something in the theatre (the red curtain) - Strictly Ballroom (dancing), Romeo + Juliet (drama), Moulin Rouge! (music).
Yes, I am requesting/recommending all three.
His other movies are Australia (2008 - now being turned into a tv series called 'Faraway Downs'), The Great Gatsby (2013), and Elvis (2022).
Oh yes, and there's the production of La Boheme he directed at the Sydney Opera house that was filmed live.
I'm on ly 12 minutes in, but I had to mention that Tara Morice, who plays Fran, also sang this version of Time After Time. Beautiful voice! My sister and I used to watch this movie all the time back in the day, and we had the soundtrack. ❤
Gia Carides, who played Liz, went on to play Nikki in the My Big Fat Greek Wedding movies. Her one-time husband was her fellow Aussie actor Anthony LaPaglia. He's best remembered for his role in the American crime show Without A Trace.
I love the fathers of both Scott and Fran! They share the love of dance, deep down in the heart.
This was my mother's favourite film - so many good family memories sitting and watching it with her and my sister! It's such a silly film and it's so under-appreciated!
Lovely reaction! This is the movie that got me into dancing. Not competitive, but it just made me discover the joy in dancing. No other movie did that quite like this one. The paso doble scene in the family's backyard, teaching Scott about feeling the music rather than just going through the motions is the universal magic of dance and why every culture in the world has some form of dance and moving to music and I just love that so much. And Doug, the father, dancing alone in the dark, just his weird little steps only for himself, that no one ever understood and felt the way he did, always felt so magical to me. He just wants to dance. Still one of my all-time favourite comfort movies, I love it so much and am always so happy when people watch it!
OMG I'm so glad you're reacting to this!!!! I love this movie. This is still my favourite Baz Luhrmann movie. If you haven't done so already, may I recommend Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Muriel's Wedding. They're both contemporaries of Strictly Ballroom and really good movies.
Yes, love all 3 of your choices- absolutely uplifting . Haven’t really liked any other Baz films sadly personally
gotta do muriels wedding
She will, sooner than you think
Such a ridiculous and fun movie. LOVE IT. Wish more people watched it
I've loved this movie for so long. It's nice to see it being viewed. Another wonderful one to watch is Ladyhawke.
Ladyhawk is high on my list.
Kemi over here hitting it out of the park with all of my childhood favorite movies! I absolutely adore your reactions and the insight you provide for each movie.
Thank you so much!!
One of my favourite movies! When Doug says "we lived our lives in fear" it reminds Scott of the Spanish saying Fran taught him: a life lived in fear is a life half lived - then Scott realises what he has to do.
The dance scene where they play Time After Time, thats the voice of the actress who plays Fran
My favorite rainy day film when I'm feeling a bit depressed.
When I was in college in the late 80s-90s, ballroom dance was very popular. We danced several times a week to different live bands. It was great fun. Some other fun dance movies are Take the Lead with the delicious Antonio Banderas, and Shall We Dance, the American (Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez) and Japanese versions are both very good.
Love this hidden gem. I saw it while watching ice dancing and found they had the same stupid rules and controversies. 😂
I watched this with my parents years ago, and we liked it so much we watched it again the next night :D I think this movie was one of the things that got me into competitive ballroom dancing later on.
Oh hell yeah, I love this movie! You always review my favorites!
This is one of my favourite films. Such a great end dance. I always cry when the dad finally asks the mum to dance and her reaction .
Glad you're reviewing this movie. The dancing is wonderful, and the story is great too. My favorite part is the paso doble while the train goes by.
I looove this film!!! Looking forward to your reaction!!!
OMG, I love this movie!!
7:12 I think the script describes Scott as being like the boy in the emperor's new clothes when he watches Tina and Nathan dance - he realises that "there's nothing there". And that then Scott and Fran start dancing the rumba the way it's supposed to be danced.
Never seen a reaction to this film before! So looking forward~
Probabaly my favourite movie. So underrated. Thank you reactiong, and hopefully bringing more attention to it.
Great reaction! Strictly Ballroom is underrated, but I like the more popular and famous *Dirty Dancing*, too.
Once upon a time, this movie and "Blast From The Past" were my ultimate comfort movies. I still love them both.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I have always loved dancing and even took ballroom lessons for a few years. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
This film is in my top ten. The cartoon like flashback with his old man is masterful.
Such a fun, quirky film with a lot of heart. One of my favorites. Glad you enjoyed it, and loved your insightful reactions.
It's like "Dirty Dancing" and "Dance With Me" movies put together with an Australian twist. I love dance movies and I definitely love that your reviewing this movie.😊
So happy this was requested for you! I rarely see anyone react to it, and it's such a fun movie! I'm glad you enjoyed it💃 ~Caroline
Yes! This movie is so WONDERFUL!!!
ahhh there were some very awesome Auzie movies in this time. I loved Strictly Ballroom since I saw it the first time when it came out... Another great Auzie movie is Muriel’s Wedding. You will love it too I think. She's so relatable to me anyway lol And I love Abba too lol
I had such a huge crush on him. Then he was in Exit to Eden ❤😊
My very first cd i got was this soundtrack. I saw this in the cinema and still love it.
This is one of my favorite movies!! So glad you got to watch it!
I love this movie! I saw it when it came out. You are picking some wonderful movies! I just looked at Wiki, and the lead actor is a dancer. This was his first acting role. I am so glad you liked it.
Saw this years ago and the only thing I remember is the Paso Doble. I love that this dance showcases the gentlemen and I hate how it's always THAT song.
It's been so long since I've seen this. A fun movie.
New hair is on point.
Thank you dear
I love all your hair changes!!! So fun!

Great reaction to great Aussie Film!
Ah, my comfort movie.
Since you asked; I think I like this hair color on you the best! 🤎
Thank you dear - I appreciate the feedback -
Yay I love this movie!
I love this movie it was funny and emotional ❤
Love this movie and your review 😊❤. Check out Moulin Rouge, another fabulous Baz Luhrman movie.
Nice job and I love how your hair looks
Merci Hunni

Request: “The Enchanted April.” 🏰🪻🌳🌿
It's beloved! I like it very much.
Can you please react to the movie Chocolat 🥰
Meu filme predileto.
The idea of different steps, was a nighmare for the established teachers. If they could not do them they would not be able to teach them. Scott's dad would have been the star, they didn't want that at any cost. Simple as that.
No lifts, from what I know.
