Here are the parts required to make the straight road MILS plates as per the video. I usually source parts from Bricklink or Brickowl.
PLEASE NOTE:
- Quantity required shown in brackets
- I have included an additional 6 2x2 plates for road plate support/attachment to base plate in the list, not shown in the video. These should be placed at the unsupported cross points on the underside of the road plate that were not supported in the video.
- The list below includes the 1x4 and 2x4 Dark Bluish Grey tiles and the 2x4 white line tiles that come with the road plates when bought as part of set 60304

Personally, I think the contrast of dark gray and light gray tiles between the sidewalk and Modulars is great at emphasizing the sidewalks as is! The only thing I would suggest is perhaps adding details to the sidewalks to make them more exciting. Great video, I’m still here!

I've not owned any Lego since I was a kid but picked up that little Landrover kit recently. Something that would be quite cool in a town like this would be putting the LED kits in buildings and possibly street lights if its viable. If you did each building separately you could illuminate them one by one. Voice control smart plugs would be quite fun too

This looks great! I make mine in a very similar manner. One change I would advise is to add either a 1x2 dark bg tile, or a 1x2 dbg grille tile to the bottom of the drains. This will cover up the 2 blue exposed studs. They may be hard to see but I just like knowing that they're there.
Hey thanks! Yeah so know what you mean about the bottom of the drains, maybe I’ll put some grill pieces in there.

@@motoringnation Hi! Most of them will have buildings next the them but I imagine when it comes to the outer edge of the city I will make sure that I use grey brick to make it uniform along the edge

Please update your part list to include the 1x6 tiles in light bluish grey to go over the drains as just found out the hard way using the list as a parts check list that they where missing in the list 😞

How do u make a sidewalk on a mils plate
Great video, thanks for sharing the update on your LEGO city. I have one question regarding the MILS plate - did you experience "bending" of the road MILS plates in the corners? I was experimenting with small 16x16 MILS plates a couple of weeks ago, but the bending in the corners was unacceptable. Hope there's not such issue with large 32x32 plates. Hey, thanks for commenting! I’ve never experienced the bending you’re talking about, I wonder why that would be? It shouldn’t happen if everything is connected properly, so can’t shed any light on that I’m afraid.
Hey you might have an updated video but I like to use brick pieces on the edge of mils road plates so that the side facing out on my shelf looks cleaner that just random color pieces and technic holes.
@@Timep3 Yes totally right. That’s exactly what I would do for any edge facing. All my roads have buildings either side but definitely that’s the way to go to make it look good for outer edges!
what is the reason to use tech brick 1x4, instead of 1x2 brick with 2 holes?
Just curious because I havent tried yet, but I want the road to be wider, so use 1x2 bricks with 2 holes and add extra width to the road? will that work?
@@nicholaspark4543 Hi! The reason for the 1x4 with 3 holes is that it lines up with the way I do my MILS base plates so they can connect together. If you do MILS the way I did then a I think in order to have a wider road as you’ve described you would need to use a 1x2 with one hole, otherwise the holes/connector won’t align on an adjoining MILS base plate.

so if I build all of my MILS with 1x2 bricks with 2 holes, there wont be any issues, correct?
I am thinking about using the brick design ID 32000. this has 2 holes, so I can make the roads wider and use 2 pin pieces and make it sturdy?
@@nicholaspark4543 as long as the holes are in the same place on all MILS you use then it’ll work fine within your own city. If you’re not ever linking with others at conventions/displays I don’t think it really matters. And you only need two connectors for sturdiness if you’re going to be picking up multiple sections together. I’ve actually now found that within my own city I don’t even need connectors and having them in place makes changing the layout a pain!

Great wee video!! This might be a silly question, but how do you get all those bricks that you need so they're at hand? Massive Lego bulk order or lots of bulk job lots etc??
Generally I use Bricklink and can get all of them from a few sellers, sometimes even just one. I have a road part wish list set up so it’s now easier to

The Lego roads are far too wide in relation to the buildings.
great Video. can you provide a parts list and where you get them from. Can you do a video to eplain the 16 X 32 plate you mentioned.. oh and by the way where is youe cafe.. May pop in ofr a coffee sometime

MILS is expensive. Dark bluish grey bricks (1xAny Size) are expensive because they are used in so many builds. How I wish Lego brings back the old road plates. Sigh.
Yes they’re not cheap! I’ve switched to using yellow for anything ‘unseen’, sadly can’t do that with the road widening section.
@@BrickheadBarista Yes. I wonder why Lego did not consider "widening" the roads in the first place to fit 6 wide vehicles. 4 wide style vehicles are as old as the old road plate system. Pick-A-Brick wall (in my country) rarely has any 1xAny Size dark bluish grey pieces (even if there is, I am often too late to get them). Anyway, I like your videos. Great work! Keep the videos flowing!

Why do this with expensive Lego bricks when there are far cheaper options for a build that will never be seen. The new road plates are horrendous , all bright and shiny gloss so with MILS you are forced to use these now.
Absolutely no reason why alternatives couldn’t be used. I use cheap used bricks from Bricklink where possible for unseen bricks. I guess the new road plates are just a matter of personal preference, I only started building last year and that’s what chose as that’s what is now in production. Fully aware they’re not to everyone’s taste and a frustrating lack of road layout options currently which hopefully they’ll add in time but who knows.
I would love to begin building modulars, but which one should I do first? The ones soon to be retired, or a new one? I like the pavement, but I think the haunted house is a little to dominant next to the city. Cheers from Sara
Hi Sara, I would suggest getting the ones that aren’t retired yet, like Jazz Club and Boutique hotel as otherwise they will go up in price to buy once retired. You can wait a while to get the museum. I agree with the haunted house, we’re at early stages of the city and that set will be moved eventually.
I bought the Jazz Club vs Assembly Square around Christmas, not realizing Assembly Square was retiring. I could kick myself. LOL.

Hi this looks awesome. Have you considered swopping out the grey sloped pieces by the crossings for tan. Typically in the UK there is usually tan/yellow/brick tactile paving to help those partially sighted people. Not sure how it would look overall but might be worth trying.
I hadn’t considered that! I’ll have a look next time Im out and about and see what I could do!
