  • Firstly, apologies to my lovely BookTubers. This is a hashtag response about the online social media presence of "witches" and charlatans. I will return to talk about books soon. My love to you!
#OcculTea was started by three media accounts that asked for opinions/reflections on this issue. Here's my response/thoughts on many of the influencers/grifters I've seen on social media. Unfortunately, Witchcraft (and Wicca) being so popular among young adults results in inauthentic personalities speaking for things that are age-old and often ill-defined because there are not enough definitive historical records. Much was destroyed during the slow burn fall of the Rome Empire and conquest of culture by early Christians, which was as bloody and devastating as Islamists in Syria last decade (2010s).
When something, especially a spiritual practice or religion goes mainstream, it's too often used by abusers, charlatans, grifters, and the self-righteous. The witchy, neopagan, and satanic communities need to take care not to become what has hunted and defamed us. The lies Abrahamic religions projected onto the others/Others they demonized are the very atrocities they committed against the world. (i.e. The Catholic Church's crimes of adoption trafficking and hiding pedophile priests.) Look at the mistakes the major world religions have made and learn from their crimes.
Be whatever it is you are. Be authentic. There's no need to copy somebody else, or jump on a bandwagon just because it's the "in" fad. You are your own person. Be that person. If you are a witch, then be your own witch.

Thank you. Thank you finally a voice that wasn’t growing daisies upside down. I’m about ready to turn 73 been in the craft since I’ve been in my 20s. I live isolated and estranged but yet I live with a bounty, full of spirits and goddesses, and another realm. I’m grateful that you put your words together in such a bountiful way of wisdom. I’ll start to follow you.

Hello! So pleased to virtually meet you. My Mama turns 76 this year, and my two friends in this state are 80 and 65. Because I don't have human children it's easier for me to chat and hang out with older women. I understand what you mean about being isolated but finding solace with the Others. I'm so glad I'm finding older people on TH-cam. Part of the irritation was algorithms blocking out older people. I thought I was the oldest person doing BookTube just for fun because there are so many trendy accounts, which I love and follow! But unlike BookTube, I've noticed the witchcraft/Wicca/pagan circles have a lot of toxic stuff and grifters.

Oh, yes. Thank YOU for giving your honest opinions and scalding us with your tea. It was definitely needed. Also, hello from the South (GA)... It is something else down here!

Hi! Good to virtually meet you. I hope you're well. 🫶🏻 I've heard there are some issues with a community in Georgia. But I don't personally know anyone in that community. I've noticed that people do Paganism/alternative religions the way they did the religion of their past - they don't fully let go of the group-thinks. (Catholics tend to be ritualistic and rule driven, Baptist all about witnessing and personal experiences, etc.)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I agree with much of what you said. The title of "witch" is often worn as a trend, but as you mentioned, witches typically have social or community recognition, whether for good or bad. In my country of origin, you typically don’t call yourself a “bruja”; people around you do, some out of admiration and respect, others out of hate and ignorance. The social aspect is solid, though not the only requirement, but it's one that can be seen across the board.
I’m about to be 30 years old, and I find it interesting how many people attack older witchcraft books. As an immigrant and queer person, I always have something to say against appropriation and bigotry. However, I also believe it's our responsibility as readers and practitioners to understand that books of witchcraft must be read with an understanding of the nuances and circumstances of the time when they were written. There's always good information and knowledge to be found-I'm typing this with Thelema in mind, and how that hot mess shaped modern magic. And despite its messiness, there's really valuable content there.
All of this to say, thanks for sharing!

A lot of people who ive seen "selling" card readings are grifters. They take advantage of peoples insecurities (wanting to find love, wealth, community) for money. They tell people what they want to hear, completely skipping over the cards and their actual meaning.
I had to stop someone mid reading and had to inform them what those cards actually meant. She was trying to tell me I'd get married that year and i had to inform her thats not what 10 of pentacles meant and i didnt not, in fact, want to get married. She got mad that i was trashing her reading, and i had to correct her i was the only one listening to or reading the cards. I dont let anyone do reading for me anymore.
I do believe there are people with Heightened sensitivites and senses, but theres some people with self proclaimed "powers" that i immediately call bullshit on and is absolutely for attention. Most times when someone tells me they have powers, i have to take with a grain of salt until i know that they actually understand what theyre talking about and not regurgitating influncer and discord server garbage.
Hearing/smelling colors is a very real phenomenon people experience- i dont recall the scientific reason behind it but other people do experience it! Thats a real power.
I have keen senses, but i attribute that more to adhd/autism than being a witch. Me calling myself a witch just describes what i do and practice spiritually- witchcraft. Its purpose is to ground me back in reality, not to chase a fantasy.
I think seeing auras to a part is widely misunderstood and mysticised. Most people who say they do dont, and just say they do and pull a color out their ass without understanding what auras are. A lot of people claiming powers just want to feel special and want attention, unfortunately. It makes it harder to believe people that do experience things that are unnatural/supernatual/strange.
I knew a lot of people that were like this in college. When i started pointing out all the obvious bullshit i was not invited back to the clique. 😂
So i dont go out looking for "witch" friends and i practice completely by myself now.
There is no collective assembly or meeting for witches, so most practices or worship is done alone. Seeing how many meetings in my areas are qliques, im glad that im not required to attend get togethers because of the gatekeepers.
Im 24 now, i only discovered witchcraft when i was 16. I didnt really actively practice until 20. I dont think of myself as an expert and i wont claim to be, but im clever enough and intuitive enough to tell that theres a lot of people that are not in it for the personal spiritual experiences and learning about magic/what it is/its history. I know well to stay away from "witch influncers" and "witch fans" because they try to tell every person how they can or absolutely cannot practice/worship. Thats up for each witch to decide for themselves and ultimately pave their own path and discover whats right for them.

There's an interesting book about Oscar the cat (Making Rounds with Oscar) who can smell death. He acts as a doula in a nursing home. I think this may turn out to be a neural trait that we can measure one day. I appreciate neuroscience delving into these unexplored senses. Check out: neurosciencenews.com

Thank you for being brave in sharing this. I feel just as angry with some "spiritual" people. I agree. Many of is, even older than Gen Z are very privilidged. I will never know if my Grandmother was a witch. I know she had to hide it, but I only knew she was spiritual. I was not as advanced, but I grew up very similar, with gifts. Being bullied is difficult. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Oh thank you! I so agree on no drugs. I thought I rocked the tea cup, but you flipped it upside down. It's difficult to be gifted and so wrongly treated and watch people want to be "cool and witchy." I do agree what starts off as goid intentions for change turn in to fads and it's sad. ❤❤❤

Thank you! Your comment means a lot! What is really painful is how Gen Z ignores the fact that women were horribly harassed and targeted, lost jobs and income... lost their children, for just being what they are. And none of us were in a scene or trying to draw attention to ourselves. These young grifters act as if they're entitled to an audience built on the back of our miseries.

I totally agree about the burning times, I talk to a lotta christian types in the street outside my house and I'm often stunned at the sheer ferocity of their ignorance. The Earth (and associated powers) made humans so interesting but if you dont wanna be a factory/office worker. It can be really hard to even know what to do with yourself when the system raising you demands action but with no course or even guidance. Aside from if its for monetary gain, then I think maybe a lot of the same people who would be doing the burnings will be investing in things that trivialize a part of the human experience, to everyone's detriment including their own.
Plus all the awful grammar, Im sorry, its purpose driven but I forgot how to turn it off.
Anyway, you are clearly a just person and you speak in love/compassion more than in judgement, i appreciate you sharing with the internet.
Also you are extremely pretty and Im highly skeptical of your age, I hope you appreciate the world you helped create even if at times it grates a bit.

Thank you so much for your kind words! Means a lot - especially because I did work on a human rights campaign (completely volunteer and vocational) and was named in a SLAPP suit with national media outlets because of my work.
