Book Review: "The Deer and The Dragon" by Piper CJ
"The Deer and The Dragon" by Piper CJ is the best romantasy book I've read. I can't wait to read the sequel. I appreciate the author's academic background and her unique blending of folklore and various pantheons with modern times. This review is a redo. I tell you why at the end...yes, it's a long-ass book vblog. I cover everything from cancel culture and bigotry to discussing the human rights campaign I carried in a SLAPP suit.
NOTE: I'm not an influencer. This is just a fun hobby. I'm in my late forties - just enjoying talking about books and shit. It's just me being my witchy self. This ol' crone was young when whimsigoth was called celestial.

Book Review: A Study in Drowning

Ava Reid's "A Study in Drowning" is the best dark academia book I've read. Dark Academia meets Romantasy in this rich narrative full of metaphor and symbolism. There's so much in this book world that parallels our reality in 2024 and our past. The allegorical telling of Reid's fairy king is a wealth of unspoken commentary on predators, the vileness within abusers.

I really hope we all make it through this election cycle, and the country can heal. I've spent my life being a mediator. It's exhausting. I have friends from all walks of life, and they all are cool people. I hope everyone can find the healing they need from religious trauma. It is so very heavy to live with.... I really worry about Gen Z even though I'm not a parent. I don't want them to make the same mistakes as the Boomers. The future should be brighter for younger people. To me, that's how progress works. I wish you the very best, and lots of peace.

    I agree with everything you've said. This book is concise and refreshing - it can be difficult to find original material sometimes, with many books in the witchcraft genre repeating similar information. This was different and it covered such an important subject area in a way that answered all my questions and filled in the gaps. You often see the witch wound being mentioned without full explanations of its real depth and meaning. I also found the third part, the healing rituals, to be very accessible and non-prescriptive. I often get put off when there's a long list of must-haves, but this author manages to offer really effective healing practises that instantly inspire and that you can mostly start straight away.

    • @The_Witch_of_Noccalula
      @The_Witch_of_Noccalula หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes! I appreciate her ability to concisely present history. Healing from this is difficult because it's still a taboo wound. People deny our life experiences. It's especially difficult when you have shame and guilt embedded in your unconscious from religious trauma.

    Just got my mix match stuff and I’m excited! I agree that Natural Life has very bold picture quality. I’m impressed with how great everything looks but I’m not in love with how it feels, kind of scratchy. My daughter thinks they feel soft and she suggested that I’m used to the super soft material of my other sheet set. Good point. Anywho. I’m washing the sheets before I use them and I hope they will feel softer. The price was amazing so I want this to work! Any tips on washing the sheets/pillow cases? PS I got The Avery Fitted Sheet 😉

      About perfumes and such, the first scent I ever wore was "Beautiful" by Estee Lauder. I tried different ones in my twenties, mostly cheaper stuff or free samples. I wore more essential oils or solid perfume from witchy stores than notable perfumes. A friend gave me a bottle of Black Orchid; I adore it. It does well on me but I do know what you mean about perfumes mixing with scent. Have you heard of Demeter fragrances? You can find them at Smallfower Apothecary. I like Kitten Fur. I found my husband a really old Austrian scent by Echt Kolnisch Wasser.

    • @NicholasOfAutrecourt

      @@The_Witch_of_Noccalula I remember “Beautiful”. I used to smell it on women in my family growing up. A big, wonderful, heady indolic white floral that I can still remember over thirty years later. Estee Lauder made some real bangers back in the 80s and 90s that had eternal staying power and sillage. (Sort of like Clinique in that respect. In fact, I have a vintage bottle of Aromatics Elixir in my collection. A dank, earthly, floral patchouli - so wonderful.) And I know Demeter very well. I’ve even met Christopher Brosius (the founder and former owner) at a couple of fragrance-related events over the years. I used to go to the health food store with my mother and some of his first releases were my first olfactory memories. He made a soliflore based around just tomato leaf which is still one of the most photorealistic things I’ve ever smelled. But I don’t know Kitten Fur. If it smells anything like huffing my old kitty’s tummy, I’m sure it smells amazing. And about your husband: are you talking about 4711? My partner wears that. A great scent for the warmer months. My only regret is that it only lasts for about 15 minutes before it disappears into the ether. I don’t mean to ruin you for perfume but do check out Lucky Scent sometime. Luckyscent dot com. Thousands of niche perfume and they sell samples of everything they have in stock. I can get lost there. If you like florals like Beautiful, I recommend pretty much anything by Papillon Artisan Perfumes, especially Salome. I hope you’re having a lovely start of your week!

      @@The_Witch_of_Noccalula :) OK, you asked for it. All but two of the following are from before the 1990s. Some are not cats in space or other planets but still in SF. Kafka On The Shore by Haruki Murakami, The Green Millenium by Fritz Leiber, Cat Country by Lao She (1932), Eye of Cat by Roger Zelazny, Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams (more Fantasy than SF), The Door Into Summer by Robert A. I'm growing my datura now. She's precious. I order my stuff from Coby because I have cats that just won't leave me alone to make my own salves. I'm afraid they'd be right up in it. Coby has the best products I've found.

      Hello, friend! Hope all is well done there. 🫶🏻 How's the gardening going? If you like dark fairy tales, do check out Albert. Also, we both read Kingfisher's "The Hollow Places" - great liminal space folk horror!

      @@The_Witch_of_Noccalula The gardening is going really well. We planted a bunch of stuff, including a lot of mandevilla, some more hibiscus, and some esperanza. Because we're had such a mild early spring, a lot of the stuff that bloomed in February is still in bloom - especially the freesia. Still waiting on the Asiatic lilies to show their faces. Very much dreading the slow approach of 100+ degree days...

      Hi! Good to virtually meet you. I hope you're well. 🫶🏻 I've heard there are some issues with a community in Georgia. But I don't personally know anyone in that community. I've noticed that people do Paganism/alternative religions the way they did the religion of their past - they don't fully let go of the group-thinks. (Catholics tend to be ritualistic and rule driven, Baptist all about witnessing and personal experiences, etc.)

    I totally agree about the burning times, I talk to a lotta christian types in the street outside my house and I'm often stunned at the sheer ferocity of their ignorance. The Earth (and associated powers) made humans so interesting but if you dont wanna be a factory/office worker. It can be really hard to even know what to do with yourself when the system raising you demands action but with no course or even guidance. Aside from if its for monetary gain, then I think maybe a lot of the same people who would be doing the burnings will be investing in things that trivialize a part of the human experience, to everyone's detriment including their own. Plus all the awful grammar, Im sorry, its purpose driven but I forgot how to turn it off. Anyway, you are clearly a just person and you speak in love/compassion more than in judgement, i appreciate you sharing with the internet. Also you are extremely pretty and Im highly skeptical of your age, I hope you appreciate the world you helped create even if at times it grates a bit.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I agree with much of what you said. The title of "witch" is often worn as a trend, but as you mentioned, witches typically have social or community recognition, whether for good or bad. In my country of origin, you typically don’t call yourself a “bruja”; people around you do, some out of admiration and respect, others out of hate and ignorance. The social aspect is solid, though not the only requirement, but it's one that can be seen across the board. I’m about to be 30 years old, and I find it interesting how many people attack older witchcraft books. As an immigrant and queer person, I always have something to say against appropriation and bigotry. However, I also believe it's our responsibility as readers and practitioners to understand that books of witchcraft must be read with an understanding of the nuances and circumstances of the time when they were written. There's always good information and knowledge to be found-I'm typing this with Thelema in mind, and how that hot mess shaped modern magic. And despite its messiness, there's really valuable content there. All of this to say, thanks for sharing!
