Thank you so much for this! I had no idea how to do pin stitch until I watched this... It goes to show that, even after 30 years + of stitching, there is always something new to learn!
Thank you for making this wonderful video! You did an excellent job of explaining both methods. The diagonal pin stitch is brilliant! I tried it today and made one change. Instead of having the tail in the back and flipping back and forth I started from the front in the upper left corner of the stitch I was starting on. Pulled so I had a short tail, completed the diagonal pin stitch, snipped any remaining tail and completed the final stitch so my needle ended in the upper left which pushed down any remaining tail. It’s a game changer for me. I just have to master the method when finishing. I need more practice with that for sure. I appreciate your thoughtful tutorial.
Gtrat tutorial. We are always learning something. I'm adopting this method now. I've been overdoing the securing of my threads, so I definitely need to change my methods! Thanks.

Thank you Shiloh! I always tend to forget the pin stitch unless I have to use it. Your tutorial reminds me that it looks so neat on the back is a good incentive to use it more often.! Thank you!
I start with diagonal pin stitch but never thought to finish with it! Thank you so much for this awesome tutorial. :) My back should look so much neater this way!
Whoa! I've used the pin stitch before, but gave up on it because I didn't like the added bulk. I never knew there was a diagonal version. Game changer! I have a piece with lots of scattered snowflakes which are just one stitch each that I wasn't sure how I was going to handle. That all just changed! I'll do a loop start and a diagonal pin stitch finish. w00t!
This tutorial video was very well made; I was able to follow and COMPREHEND both versions of the stitch. After seeing both, I think that I'll probably use the diagonal pin-stitch, as well. Plus, I really like how you do your ending pin-stitch; ingenious!💗 Thank you 👏
This video is so helpful! I found out about ink circles designs through your floss tube videos and using pin stitch is keeping my elegant squid very neat!
I am so glad you recorded how you do your pin stitch! I have been trying to figure this out as I have a few designs that have single stitches using 1 strand and now I feel i know what i am doing finally! Thanks so much 🥰
Love doing the pin stitch it does make everything look lovely. I was looking at your finishes for 2019 and saw the amazing world finish. If you have it fully finished I would love to see it.
Thank you for the tutorial. Over 2 I always start with a variation of the diagonal pinstitch as well, I loved seeing how you ended with that. I’m wondering how you would start and end with a pinstitch if you had to do just the one stitch.
So for finishing on the diagonal, you stitch the top stitch FIRST & then do the pin stitch for the bottom left second! It’s just the reverse so that the pin stitch is covered!
Great tutorial...just thinking there must be some way to start with 3 strands of floss. I found your tutorial which ... bonus... shows how to end as well. New to pin stitch...thank you.
Thank you for this video! I love using the diagonal pin stitch to start, but your video helped me figure out how to end with it as well. I'm currently working on After the Roses by Ink Circles, 1 over 1 on 25 ct, and there are a ton of color switches, so this has been super helpful! Thanks!
@@Xstitchmd its pretty much the same, but I start from the top so i dont need to turn my work over. just trim the thread close and when you finish your X it gets covered
When I use a pin stitch to finish my thread, I don’t pull the second leg of my X all the way through. I bring up my needle for the pin stitch, put it in the middle hole. Then I pull the second leg through. It’s much easier to find the middle hole this way. Love the diagonal pin stitch. Thank you!
Thanks for watching! “splitting your stitches” means that when you go down into the hole, you go directly through the floss already there (instead of around it). This gives a bit of extra security because it has the floss already there to “grab onto”. Let me know if that makes sense?
@@Xstitchmd Yes, for stitching with 2 strands, that makes sense, thank you! Do you know if splitting the stitches would still apply for a pin stitch with 1 strand, e.g. working with silk on a higher count linen? That is still not entirely clear to me. Thanks again!
Thank you Shiloh! This might work out better than previous attempts I have tried on certain projects. My main issue is when I am stitching on a stand on how to start odd numbers of thread, 1 or 3, without a mess of waste threads and ending the threads. I don't really like the look of running the threads through the stitches on the front of my work. Any helpful suggestions? I will definitely try this when I get a chance.
Are you able to link to or do a second tutorial for starting and stopping the same stitch with diagonal pin stitch on aida? I have some confetti that I've been putting off
I’m Im a LONG time stitcher and I’m petrified! Of the pin stitch Petrified !I will not let myself do it! That needs to change I’m going to Just Do It.! Thanks. I’m Im a little mixed up on the ending pin stitch but I’m going to learn it that’s a Oct. goal for me Take care and stay safe.
Question: when ending in this method, wouldn’t the thread come undone pretty easily? Or is it that since it’s underneath the top thread, that’s enough to be held down by that thread?
If you are starting a thread with a pin stitch, sometimes the first leg can come loose. To avoid that, I make sure that when I go down for the second leg, I pierce through the thread to anchor it. For ending a thread with a pin stitch, the stitch that is already there anchors it down & it does not come out!! Which makes it tough if you’re trying to pick it out if you make a mistake haha - basically you just have to cut it! Hope that helps!!
Hmmm - I am not quite sure! I supposed you could just pierce the center of the square (like you would for Aida?). I very rarely stitch over 1, so I haven’t tried it personally! So sorry I couldn’t be of more help!
Great question! I do absolutely nothing fancy haha - I usually sit on the couch & don't use any special light aside from the overhead light in the room! Lucky to have good vision so far, so don't use magnification or anything like that yet. I'm sure I will have to one day!! haha
Excellent tutoria. Agree with you on diagonal stitch and want to practice today Good to know the horizontal stitch and for that matter vertical as well. As far as diagonal stitch: I guess you leave the little loop in the back to ensure that when you come back you can split the thread to secure the stitch? When you end the tread: Do you do the same then by leaving a little loop?. Thanks much! Esias
You probably could, but you would have to pierce the center of the linen thread! (Same as if you’re doing it on Aida). I haven’t done it before, but you could try!!
Thank you for this tutorial! I just realized that the pin stitch I was doing is only half a pin stitch (I go from middle right to the middle, then cover it with a full cross), which explains why it never worked with ending threads lol
On Aida, you need to pierce the center of the square, since there isn’t already a hole there! (Same as if you were doing a fractional stitch on Aida). Hope that helps! 😊
