      I posted this comment in the regular comment section, but I don't know if you will see it or not... But I figured if I posted here too, you'd have a better chance of seeing it!!!
      I love it!!!
      The 2020 guitar happened in "January and February before 2020 happened..." 7:40
      LMAO 🤣🤣🤣
      Actually, 2020 happened at 12:00 am January 1st!!!
      So... You want to change the name because the "2020 guitar" has a negative connotation to it....
      I've got a great idea!!!
      The 2020 guitar will now be known as the Crimson D20.
      D20 stands for Double 20, or 2020.
      The D could also stand for 'Discoverer' which is another name for an Explorer. Or...
      The Crimson 2020 PrePan Guitar. I'm sure I don't have to iterate or even reiterate that PrePan means Pre Pandemic...
      I like the Crimson D20 the best!!!
      Or... Just go totally nuts and rename the 2020 guitar.... Drum roll please..... 🥁...
      The Coffee Killer !!!
      I love my mug!!!!

    I love watching you design the layout of your build on the fly, drawing freehand Euler spirals with greater accuracy than I could accomplish with a actual French curve to hand. And I am always heartened to hear a craftsman say that although a component or part of a build will never be seen it will still be made to the highest standard. It's that philosophy that ensures I return to this channel every time a new video is broadcast.

      @@CrimsonCustomGuitars exactly, I have been wondering about a solution as such as well, as I (together with a lot of your followers I assume) are limited in workspace. Making tools as multifunctional as possible sure makes this interesting. On the jig itself, I would add some kind of guidance that keeps your object close on the jig. Now it is quite a hassle to keep it in the correct place I imagine, which make it difficult to keep it always exactly at the same distance from the sander if your object should move away from the jig (not sure if I explain it very well)

    For the 2020 guitar name, I propose "Regulus". 1, because it resembles a space ship, fitting an astronomical name. 2, because it's full of straight lines. In Portuguese, the tool ruler is "régua". régua->regular->Regulus. I searched for it, regulus means little king. So, I guess that maybe regular can be related to straight lines in english, IDK. 3, the guitar is badass, it rules, the litlle king rules, tadah. 4, I like the name.

    I've done a number of experimental builds with thin plywood bodies. 1/2" reclaimed can warp over time. New 3/4" seems to work fine.

  • @ErickC
    @ErickC 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Norma used to build Les Paul copies out of plywood back in the 1960s. The body was built of a thick plywood slab, and then a top piece of thin plywood was formed into shape and glued to the body with blocks of wood in between acting as spacers. I think the colloquial term for these is "bubble bodies."
    It's a cheap way of making a guitar, but from sanding down and refinishing one of them, I discovered that it actually looked really cool. The belly cut on the body in particular, as you might imagine.
    I guess it's not too dissimilar to what Gibson did with the Zoot Suit guitars many years later.

  • @jlarts
    @jlarts 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    This might be unfounded but I'm slightly concerned about the weight balance of the final instrument. With the body made from rather thin material and the neck and headstock from laminated hardwoods, I'm wondering how you'll counteract potential neck dive or whether I'm just (wait for it) fretting for nothing... ;)

    Agh Ben... you’ve simultaneously done my pocket book a favor. And done it in!
    That little jig makes me want a belt sander now... better than buying a thickness sander I guess...

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
      @CrimsonCustomGuitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      sadly there is still a very good argument for a thickness sander :) This does work wonderfully for narrower stock.. B

    A plywood guitar would be cool if you built the entire thing out of it and made your own ply out of home made veneers of different woods, but not shop bought stuff. Imagine a fretboard like the pixely cyberpunk one but higher resolution. Could be epic

      @@CrimsonCustomGuitars definitely.
      Y'know, if this works consistently, it could be an accessory sold by crimson. That thicknesser is a pretty standard design (Rigid in North America sells the exact same one) and having equipment with as many uses as possible is, as you know, a godsend in smaller shops! Even to start a PDF jig page would be super useful to aspiring builders!

    Regarding thickness sanders I have seen a number of people use a drill powered rolling pin sander affixed to a jig with a tilting board for thickness adjustments to do small piece work.
    Also the former 2020 build could be named P.P.E. for either Pre Plague Era or Personal Protective Equipment..... Dealers Choice.

    The 2020 GGBO champs, Texas Toast, have already done a "Les Ply" (neck was ply too)
    Plus there are a few regular builders over at Reddit/Luthier that have done several.
    You can get some pretty amazing patterns if you get creative with the lamination directions.
    Interested to see your take on it Ben.

    In teardown videos for cell phones, I see cell phone speakers (the bigger ones) have these micro acoustic supplementing bbs -all packed into the voids of the speaker's housing. I wonder if you could fill all the voids inside your guitar with those and have any kind of special results.
