A scientist with over 200 peer reviewed publications here. This video, as do many others, shows how utterly UNscientific Mike's advice is. Mike's (add Nippard et al.) supposedly scientific advice is nothing of the sort - it is marketing nonsense of the "what non-scientists think science is" kind. Eric's advice is far better aligned with the actual science. Those who think otherwise just demonstrate their inability to separate appearance (Mike's and Nippard's supposedly objective, systematic, etc. analysis, vs Eric's over-the-top flamboyancy) from substance.

If you take the biggest, strongest, most successful lifters in the world and see what they have in common - it's mindset, grit and ego. You would be hard put to find certain training methods that stick out, other than trivial truths. This observation is what actually matters. A study on a few college students lifting weights for the first time in their lives is completely meaningless to anyone who is even somewhat passionate about lifting. That's a factual observation - that's science. The problem is, it's very hard to measure these variables like intensity. Even failure is about mindset. Does Arnold's rpe9 and a random beginner's rpe9 look the same? Do they promote the same adaptation? Is there even any meaning to these studies?
Even if you can get marginally more efficient work in with weird exercises or techniques, it's a drop in the ocean compared to your diet, sleep habits, mindset, ego, passion and grit. What happens when you do the most optimal routine, and plateau? Your training must evolve along with you. Even if there were a hypothetical "optimal" rputine, it would be locally optimal and would probably change within a few months.
The only study that matters is you. N=1. Find out what's best for you. Walk the walk and learn your body. Nobody can show you the straight path because there isn't one.

From one Eric to another: Honestly I think you would have the most success on youtube doing videos where you combine this style where you just talk to the audience, and splice in clips of you lifting massive weight. It's the best of both worlds. People come to your channel because you have an inspiring and hilarious personality, I think that's why these vids work so well. But if you gain lots of personal satisfaction from posting the lifting vids, combining the 2 might work.

what i’m noticing from rick the stick’s socratic seminar today is that this modern day gym culture “modern wisdom” type video is just neurotic perfectionism/OCD bro.
but branding it as “modern wisdom” and “discipline” makes it seem noble. nah bro, you just can’t handle fluidity and spontaneity so you try to micro manage every little fucking thing bout ur life to “optimize” and feel like ur more wise or better than the average person. all mind no soul.
thanks rick for talking sense into the masses

They basically made themselves out to be non-feeling computers with a need to control everything.

Reminds me of a video I saw about modern western movies and TV shows focusing on neurotic perfection over accepting something, enjoying it, and finding your own way.
The impact of all that media might be that people feel pressured to be the absolutely perfect whether they enjoy it or not.
I enjoy my workouts a lot which is why I even struggle to take a rest day. I'm practically itching to do more and go harder. My workout might not be optimal but it's all stuff I deeply enjoy
