  • Vaping is the most common way for young people to ingest nicotine. It is less regulated than smoking and has even caused random deaths amongst teenagers, so is it actually worse than cigarettes?

i think the amount of lithium batteries ending up in landfills is also worth mentioning. I have a huge "bag of shame" that was my biggest reason for quitting. you can't even pay the recycling center to take them unless they're fully dismantled, so no one does it. we need more regulation for all the electronic waste this creates.

I don’t understand the disposable vapes. I’ve had the same pen/battery for years and cycle through the little pod cartridges. Hopefully they find a way to make those recyclable, or better yet sell the oil only and refill it yourself.

Doesn't help that the 18650 batteries don't last that long. And they are expensive too! $20 for a pair and the worse part is if you get some old batteries you might as well throw em away. They will lose half their charge when not in use 🥲

I think one of the biggest things that is usually overlooked is how often people are vaping. if you compare to smokers who can only smoke occasionally throughout the day and they have to take an actual break and go outside normally compare against people that use Vapes that can do it indoors basically Non-Stop the entire day

I agree, I used to smoke cigarettes and there was always a time where I was smoking and times where I wasn't. I feel alot better after switching to a vape it is lke I hit it non-stop. When I was at work, in the store, while I'm eating. With a cigarette it always has an end, so you get used to smoking certain lengths of time. With vapes tho it's ongoing with no end for awhile so you just keep hitting it. I do try to step outside of places when I wanna repeatedly hit my vapes a few good times, kinda like how going out for a cig is

Precisely. Also since you can vape almost anywhere it's more accessible and you're more likely to puff on your vape than a cigarette...unless you're a severely addicted cigarette smoker

Two months later im feeling more awake during the day, ive managed to gain a few pounds when ive struggled to the past few years of vaping. Do your best not to trade habits though, try not to eat a bunch of junk food and smoke more weed. I found myself doing that in the first few weeks after but started working on that too. Don't let the "is vaping as bad as smoking" keep you from quitting smoking. Also, to anybody having trouble quitting smoking and don't want to "jsut switch addictions", and I mean this seriously as an ex smoker, PLEASE take the time to switch to vaping. Even if it's "just as bad" as smoking, your lungs will thank you. I've been vaping as long as I'd been smoking and the health effects I've experienced from vaping are a fraction of anything resembling the COPD-ridden hell that smoking ever was. Just my anecdotal evidence from myself and those in my personal life who also used to smoke, so take it with a grain of salt, but I will advocate for vaping over smoking all day.

I vaped for nearly 4 years and found a great way to quit. My friend had been raving about this key lime vape juice from a local shop near him, so I had him send me a bottle. Turns out that where he's from, all juice needs to be 0mg nicotine. Anyways, I vaped that whole bottle and still got the physical stimulation of hitting a vape without the chemical dependence from the nicotine. By the time the juice was gona about a month later, I was genuinely too lazy to find more of that juice and I just stopped vaping. Been clean for alomst two years now!

The hardest part for me was redirecting my hands to do something else other than reach for a vape. For me that ended up being a constant struggle for the first month or so. Like if I was playing a game, after every round or in any downtime, I'd pick up my vape.
My simple, healthy solution to this was to always have a bottle of water in front of me. That way I'd remind myself, oh yeah, not supposed to be vaping, and I could reach out and still grab something to fulfill that mouth action I was really after. Which ended up working very well, I recommend it.

Walking helped a lot for me. Whenever I had cravings I would go outside to walk. But say I’m at work, I would play with something in my hand and chew gum. I used nicotine patches and gum before but not this time. I wanted the nicotine out of my system and quit cold turkey. For me it worked but it may be helpful to others to slowly decrease your nicotine consumption with patches!

I do appreciate that at the end of the video the difference between tobacco and vape was actually discussed. I'm far from a young person using vape to be cool. I smoked 1-2 packs of smokes a day for 25 years until I was finally able to get OFF tobacco and move to vaping. Those nearly 30 years were filled with attempt after attempt to quit with repeated failures. For the last 8 years I have been tobacco free and while I'm still heavily addicted to nicotine, the delivery mechanism is far less problematic at this point. I do think anyone who is not addicted to nicotine should avoid it like the plague, but realistically there are many people like myself who need a less harmful alternative to tobacco and at this point vaping provides that.

I've grown up in the vaping epidemic in highschool. I just remember hitting 10th grade and suddenly EVERYONE around me was vaping. Thankfully I never ever started, and I think part of that is because both of my parents have smoked their entire lives, and they would literally destroy me if I started vaping, as they taught me first hand how bad it was.
I remember being offered a vape once, and when I declined, the girl said "Good. Don't start."
I remember walking into bathrooms in the mornings before school started and just smelling vapes everywhere, seeing the vapor, it was insane. I remember being in the locker rooms and seeing everyone vape. (There was never anyone supervising the locker room since there were were no gym coaches for one of the genders) I remember kids literally vaping when the teacher briefly left the classroom. It's so bad and widespread its ridiculous.
I'm in university now and I will say it's not much better. My campus strictly enfrocing no smoking, vaping, or drinking policies on campus (including weed because I live in a state where it's still illegal) and no joke everyday while I'm walking around I see students vaping everyday.
The epidemic is BAD and it's only getting worse. To any grade school kids or college students, please don't start. I'm forever thankful I never did, and you will be too.

Propylene Glycol is also the carrier in many asthma inhaler medications, I'm always confused when it's mentioned in a negative light with regards to vaping. Compared to when I smoked, when I started vaping my libido actually increased - probably has something to do with the lack of carbon monoxide in my body compared to smoking thus increasing blood flow. Glad you actually clarified the Evali issue, most don't and just put it down to all vaping rather than the actual culprit of THC vapes. I quit smoking using vaping, then subsequently quit vaping. It was always the plan. Of course you're better off not inhaling anything into your lungs, ever, but vaping is less harmful and works for many to quit smoking, myself included.

I would like to point out that the presence of Propylene Glycol in asthma inhalers doesn't inherently mean it's safe for frequent recreational inhalation. Medical applications, such as inhalers, are designed to deliver a benefit that outweighs the risks, with usage and dosage carefully controlled. Asthma sufferers use inhalers sparingly, typically during symptomatic episodes, which minimizes potential side effects. In contrast, the habitual use in vaping introduces Propylene Glycol to the lungs at a much higher frequency and dosage.

Good thing to note with the THC vapes coming from the perspective of someone who's been a manager of a smoke shop for 4 years and has connections to people in the industry.
The issue with the vitamin E acetate popping up in a lot of THC vapes was due to cost cutting. One of the popular street methods for testing the quality of a cart was to flip it upside down and see how long it took the air bubble to move, it it practically didn't move at all then it was high quality. Unfortunately, you could get away with passing off a lower quality (i.e. lower THC value) by mixing it with vegetable oil. It would make it thicker but an, at the time, unintended side effect of it was that vegetable oil when vaporized creates vitamin E acetate.
Once it was learned that that was the cause of the health issues most, if not all, people who had been using vegetable oil stopped. I don't know if this was ever reported on widely or not which is probably why it wasn't mentioned in the video and also only tangentially related.

Hey AsapScience, one thing that frustrates me with big tobacco and vaping is that everybody only discusses the combustion reaction of burning tobacco, but that is only part of it. Big tobacco adds a ton of chemicals to their cigarettes that have been found to be carcinogenic. Some studies have found that there are upwards of 600 ingredients in cigarettes, and when burned, that turns into 7,000 chemicals. It isnt as simple as just "burning tobacco". Tobacco is just 1 of the ingredients of the 600, but Big tobacco should be held accountable and responsible for the other 599 on top of the tobacco. We have even allowed Big Tobacco to just blame nicotine, and we see "nicotine causes cancer" Surgeon Gerneral warnings everywhere, but in all studies, nobody has been able to show that Nictotine is carcinogenic.
For some added irony on Vitamin E and EVALI cases... It wasnt just any THC vapes, it was "Black Market" THC Vapes. People were illegally selling THC cartiridges, that were filled up in someones home with literally 0 oversight. This was done to trick/short the consumer and to increase profits on their illegal sales. They were using vitamin E since it has the same color and consistency as THC vapes that you could get at a cannabis club/marijuana dispensary. Most dispenserarys if reputable do have some oversight and restrictions. Now, the ironic part is that these EVALI cases have been the supporting pillars to cause more laws around e-cigarettes and vaping devices, but as we all know, when more laws restrict sales then black market sales go up. We literally helped create a stronger platform for black market sales with all of the vape laws, marijuana tax laws, etc which is why we continue to see a spike in EVALI cases. I'm not advoacting free reign of e-cigarettes and vaping, but I do think we should promote safer sales and controls in place to ensure safety rather than bans and prevention all together. People didnt stop drinking during the prohibition.

They use waste from gypsum mines as fertilizer, and its contaminated with radioactive metals such as uranium, radium, thorium, etc. These metals end up in, which is why cigarettes expose you to radiation.
Also, i was happy to see ASAP acknowledge that the EVALI issue was unrelated to nicotine vapes. Ive heard so many people use it as an argument against nicotine vapes, and it bothers me because its incorrect.
Back when it EVALI was still unfolding, i actually wrote a research paper on the issue for my humanities class. I had come to the conclusion that vitamin e acetate was to blame, a few months before the official conclusion was announced.

The keys thing I’ve noticed with cigarette smoking patients is they know how bad of a habit smoking is, but that same awareness amongst vapers isn’t. When vaping hit the UK in the mid 00’s, I shuddered when it began to be popular as it just never felt right that we were inhaling these things, and now with the flavourings it’s became an epidemic around schools. Of course it’s got less toxins than cigarettes, but the NHS will still not actively promote vaping, and in the UK companies are banned from advertising it on TV or radio. I’ve always feared the cancers we’ll see in 10+ years, directly linked to vaping, will terrify us, and I just cannot see how the eventual reality will be anything different

Worth noting that nicotine levels are variable. Common ranges in the UK, depending on the type of nicotine, are either between 3mg, 6mg, 12mg and 18mg. Those strengths roughly equate to smoking up to 5, 10, 15 and 20 cigarettes a day respectivley.
Salt nicotine used in disposable models, like the Lost Mary you were showing, are PH7 or neutral, so they're the ones that absorb in to the blood faster.

  • @PaulOrtiz

I found (and continue to find) quitting vaping far harder than quitting cigarettes. At one point I was doing it so much that I associated pretty much every place in the house and every activity with it. I’d never smoke a roll up in bed. Or while working. Or after the gym. But puffing fruity mist? Sure why not - what’s the harm!
I was also of the impression that the worst thing about nicotine is that it makes you want more of it. Not realising the actual physiological effects. I started waking up in the middle of the night feeling anxious, shaking hands, feelings of like…dread. It’s evil stuff tbh. I still get tempted but I think my fear of irreversibly damaging my lungs is winning out.

For clarification the tax is based on ml of e-liquid. Lower nic bottles are bigger and are usually bought by adults trying to ween off of nicotine, while disposables and closed pod systems with fewer ml are what is being bought by teenagers. So adults trying to quit are paying more while ppl selling vapes to teenagers are not

I was talking to a school counsellor the other day who pointed out to students that (in the western world) we were extremely close to eliminating cigarettes. There's a whole generation of kids who just aren't interested in taking up smoking and the older smokers are going to die off do we honestly think it's a coincidence that vapes come along now appealing to younger users to get them hooked on nicotine?

  • @LMacNeill
    @LMacNeill 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I smoked for 24 years and I used vaping as a tool to help me quit smoking (in addition to nicotine gum). Because you can control the amount of nicotine in the "juice," it can be very helpful to slowly wean yourself off of the nicotine. Of course, you have to make sure you're buying the right stuff -- getting liquid with too much nicotine will only make your addiction worse.
I fully quit smoking (and vaping) 9-and-a-half years ago after about 6 months of slowly weaning myself off of nicotine using a mixture of nicotine gum and vaping. Haven't looked back since. 100% worth it!!

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this but only the first week of vaping for me felt euphoric, calm , and relaxing. Following the third week I started to feel anxious after I vaped. The initial puff relaxed me but the post affects had my heart racing , and had me very light headed . I still craved it though even though I got horrible side effects. I quit vaping 2 months ago. I have had several attempts before that. not to say that I don't hit a vape at some ones party but for the most part that is very few and far between. My trigger to quit was that I was very active and I would go to the gym after a long weekend of vaping. I was doing a plank and I could hear air exiting my lungs after I had stopped breathing . almost like a wet breathing sound. I was horribly out of breath and it was difficult to keep up with my cardio . I could feel it affecting my training . I'm a college kid , everyone on my campus vapes because we are all stressed out. So i get cravings constantly , even this video got me thinking about a vape and then I started craving one . I've been staying strong though.. I have a partner who admittedly vapes at work . I encourage him to not but he leaves his vape at work because I am severely addicted to it. if he brings it home , I will smoke it . I cant balance it . its hit after hit . where he takes a hit after an hour or two . he can control how much he's hitting it. I'm firm on not wanting to ingest it at all so I've been doing okay . It is hard when one is in front of me.

That's exactly how it goes. After the first couple weeks you get a nic tolerance and the good feelings are few and far between. I still vape but it does make me anxious sometimes and I don't like the heart racing feeling. There was a point when I quit for about a week because suddenly it would make me nauseous, even if I hadn't hit it for a few hours and would only take one hit. Nicotine isn't fun after the first week unless you're drinking lol. Before I got into it I'd joke about nicotine addicts because it is "the most pointless addiction," it doesn't even feel good unlike weed or other drugs lol. I started vaping as a joke because I thought it would be funny to buy one out of a vending machine at a club, and here I am now. And it's hard to quit when you're peers constantly are. I'm confident I could completely quit, at the times I've taken breaks it honestly felt good to overcome the cravings and I felt powerful lol. But my friend that I frequently spend weekends at vapes and it's hard not to just grab it while you're laying in bed when it's there. Then it hooks you again because since you havent had it in a while you get those good feelings again. It's rough out here.

@@maisyrae4967 yes I can resonate with this. I got that neouseous feeling too. I would take a couple hour break and I would still feel sick. Going out to the bar.... Is the worst. I will hit someone's vape if they allow it. I do. T go out and buy one though. That is my boundary because I do not go out that much. I went cold turkey. But there are replacemts to replace the hand to mouth motion. I know it's not the same cause we are addicted to the nicotine..... Not the hand motion. But it helps getting through the hard weeks. I feel way better. I have my energy back and it's encouraged me to also quit things like energy drinks and ect. It's hard as hell. But setting reasonable goals and having a plan to replace the bad habit with something healthier helps alot. Also letting your friends know you are trying to quit. So not pulling out the vape in front of you might be a healthy boundarie.

yes totally, i was a very intermittent vaper my first year of college. id get one maybe once a month since i was underage and couldn’t buy them myself and didn’t want to ask people regularly to buy them for me, but i remember trying to make my vapes last as long as i possibly could. id burn those suckers so much that it would taste like meat when i inhaled. it was foul lmfao. but they never lasted a whole month for me so i would go like 2-3 weeks vaping and 2-3 weeks not and it was excruciating, i’m not sure how i did i it honestly. the constant back and forth of being an addict and then quitting cold turkey definitely messed me up physically and mentally on top of all the stressors of college. i tried to quit vaping this january but slipped up and got another one this june but since that one died i’ve been clean. let’s hope it’s for real this time. we can do this !!

Honestly, it was a pretty similar experience for me. It felt good to hit it every time the first week or two and then after that, it was like I was just doing it because I needed to when I was feeling cravings. For me, a big part of the appeal was the oral fixation and the feeling of inhaling the vapor into my lungs. The nicotine was alright, but like I said it wore off after awhile. My realization that I needed to stop was when I started coughing all the time. Like I couldn't even laugh without going into a coughing fit, it sucked. I'm off of it now after trying and failing to quit several times, and it's much better now. Still cough sometimes when I laugh too much though.

I started vaping back in 2010, when the concept was relatively new, and most of the commercial vapes you could buy looked like cigarettes (before the giant box mods and stuff took over). It was an amazingly effective way to quit the bad smoking habit I had previously, and it only took about two weeks before I noticed a HUGE improvement in my health. I lost my smoker's cough in less than a month.
Eventually I started mixing my own juice, and started dropping the amount of nicotine until I was vaping no nicotine at all: the hand/mouth habit got me thru the nicotine withdrawal while barely noticing it, and after some time on zero nic, I eventually stopped picking it up so much. Eventually I noticed I went almost the whole day without touching it, so I threw it in a drawer and never looked back.
I feel like vaping is probably one of the most painless ways to quit smoking, and even if you don't drop the vape, it's still harm reduction making the switch from traditional cigs. It sort of irritates me that as far as our medical establishment goes, good is the enemy of perfect, and complete abstinence is the only option they will ever endorse. I feel like there are great missed opportunities to step people down from tobacco's more harmful forms into products that keep them comfortable while also reducing the damage they do to their lungs. But medicine's insistence on cold turkey quitting, or scary drugs like Chantix, just prolongs misery for people who can't quit easily.
Most of the problems with vapes is centered on the flavoring components and could be minimized or eliminated by formulating safer flavors. From there, create a better step-down program to help people get there.

On the other hand, vaping nicotine does not contribute to the Tobacco Settlement money that US state government depend on to keep the politicians able to give out goods unrelated to smoking. Therefore, the government has a vested interest in keeping people from switching away from tobacco.

The amount of personal anecdotes from myself and others of not being smokes, starting to vape, and now we all smoke i think highlights how insidious nicotine producing companies are. I roll my own and have a cigarette every couple days- I still know it's bad but it feels more controlled than when I was vaping and had that thing in my hand at all times. There's also a little bit of the devil you know- i am consenting to all the harm cigarettes cause because I know the risks. With vaping we truly have no idea the long term effects and that is much scarier.

Smoking weed with fire is the same as smoking a cigarette. Either way you're inhaling carbon monoxide, the same thing that comes out of a car exhaust.

Would you be able to cover nicotine pouches compared to vapes OR cigarettes?
As this is becoming more and more common as well, and there is almost no information online about that.. I think a lot of people would be interested! Thanks!

I’m glad that the neighborhood I live in has no one vaping, when I was a kid I was completely turned away and everyone now in grade 8 also doesn’t vape and I go to a different city for school. This might change when I go to high school but my sister says that barley any people vape in her high school which I’m planning to go to so nice!

I was an on and off smoker of Marlboro reds for 10yrs, more on than off. I was always trying to quit but eventually after months I'd start again. One of my friends said she had tried a vape that tasted exactly like it. I tried it and immediately was hooked. I never had any crazy problems with cigarettes other than ruining my french manacuer, the high cost, bad cough and constant nicotine smell.
When i switched over to vape i didnt ruin my nails, i never smelled anymore, saved money and the cough was long gone. Unfortunately, after about 3 years of vaping it started to really affect my gums. Although i didnt realize it at the time, vaping really dried out my mouth whereas cigarettes didnt. This constant drying caused my gums to receed in certain areas. I had no choice but to get gum surgery, I put it off as long as i could because i wanted to still vape. It was the worst recovery ever...
I had no choice but to quit cold turkey after the surgery and about a year later i indulged for my birthday and that was it. Also, i used to go through a pack of cigarettes in about a day, but with vaping it was constant. You can vape anywhere, anytime, thats a real issue.

There is no such thing as second hand vape. The "smoke" you see in the air is water vapor the same thing that makes real clouds in the sky and what comes out of a humidifier.
There is nothing dangerous in the slightest about the vapor after it is exhaled into the air.

    • @xavier6130
      @xavier6130 หลายเดือนก่อน

@kingzach74 It's not water but propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin vapor, which means that secondhand vaping is about as harmful as being in the same room as a very underpowered smoke machine. Namely, not much.

@@mitchaser5159 Not walking. Working. Big difference. Regardless, I can tell you first hand vaping does almost nothing compared to cigarettes.
I know this because I use a pulse oximeter. When I smoked my heart rate would go nuts and my oxygen would plummet. When I vape neither of those vitals do anything at all. They don't move.
Vaping isn't healthy but neither is bacon. The fact remains, they're both better than smoking. It is what it is.

Honestly I use THC vapes and this video made me feel a little better, especially about EVALI. For a while I was worried I could get a serious lung injury from the distillate but after learning all the cases are from Vitamin E Acetate I feel so much better, glad I buy from reputable online shops that have in-depth third-party lab testing for every batch.

totally agree. thc vapes are really of no concern here in canada since it is properly regulated. they are safe (and super cheap!). it's a great way to smoke herb without smoking it :). the vitamin e issue was with black market carts. the only thing that sucks in canada is there is a really heavy tax on anything vape related, but it's still no where close in cost compared to cigs, and is a much lower risk (albeit not zero) alternative.

Inhaling any type of smoke into your lungs is dangerous. It's safer to just take edibles since you're not risking lung cancer.
