HONDA HRX217 | Mowing Low with a Rotary Mower

- I use both reel and rotary mower in maintaining my lawn, I use the rotary to do a rough cut and also pickup leaves and debris. Then I use my reel mower to do the final low and clean cut.
The beauty about the HRX217 is it can cut really low at .75”, and does it really well.
So if budget is tight and you can only afford one mower at the moment, I say you invest on one of this mower as it will do the good stuff that you get from a rotary mower and cut “reel” low.

Just purchased one of these mowers and used it today. I am very impressed at the cut quality and the strength of the motor. I have 8,000 square feet and it only took just over 35 mins to do the entire yard. I’m curious what type of grass you have? Very green at such a short cut.

I have the exact one and the formate clippings fly out between the bag and the shoot lid. Defeats the entire purpose and gets all over me!

Very nice mower. Since it’s capable of cutting low, I think it would work great in conjunction with the Swardman, especially for spring / fall clean up. Now you got me thinking.
I love how it hugs the ground, almost like a body kit! I was nervous when you were mowing along the retaining wall! 💚👌🧘

I have the older HRX with the 190 engine and love it. The fold down handle is great for space saving and I love the lighter/rust free deck and ability to mow low. I had the Honda HRR216 prior to that to get the HRX They are both outstanding mowers!
Both HRX and HRR are awesome mowers,...i wish i can say the same thing with the HRN216

My goal is to ever get to try reel mowing on my 5,300 ft² lawn and get a clean low cut, but unfortunately I guess I first have to get it perfectly level 😢

I have the older model as well.
A useful accessory to save the deck sides from wearing against the concrete is the "edge guard" it is a strip of sturdy stainless steel that bolts to each side.
Probably 25$...or you could make up something yourself.

I once owned a HRC216 (commercial mower) and I like that edge guard feature. Didn’t know you can purchase one for this mower, thanks for the tip Wayne.

I just got this today. Cuts great. However I wish there was a setting to have it raised a little higher. I seem to have to bend over more with this Honda than my last lawn mower. The highest setting is still a bit low.

I have the 190cc model and the 200cc model and I have to say Honda makes one hell of a mower! Honda,Echo and Makita for the win Japanese made engines are by far the best out there.
Absolutely the truth, my old Murray push mower died several weeks ago and my wife called me later that day to tell me she found a HRX217 mower at a thrift shop for $30. I told her to get it and bring her home. Filled it with fresh gas and second pull it started!

Lawn looks great! Almost looks reel cut. This gives me hope you can cut decently low with a rotary.
I use both, the thing about this mower is it cuts short and cuts really clean. With this mower set to 3/4”, a level lawn, sharp blades, and mow 2x a week,.. you’re set 👍🏼

This grass is darn right beauty! What kind of grass is this? You prefer this lawn mower vs California reel?
Is it just the 3/4 inch setting that makes this good for cutting low? I assume that there is nothing special with this rotary mower that reduces scalping any more than other rotary mowers? For a less than perfectly flat lawn, a reel mower would still be needed to go to 3/4 inch....I assume.
i'm so glad I stumbled on this video. I like the low cut look, but not ready for a reel mower. And even when I do i still need somthing to suck up the fall leaves and debris. I watched one video where it looked like it left clumps on that lawn when bagging, but that was from like 11" down to 4 or 2.5" I want to know how much suction does it have when you mow at 0.75" continuously and then you have to suck up stuff from a 0.75". DOES IT SUCK!?
This gas powered mower really sucks! Battery powered mower really lacks suction power.

Yes and yes. I have kentucky bluegrass and he has tall fescue, and different maintenance techniques makes a difference.

..and nothing can replace a reel mower as far as cut quality, i use both rotary and reel but in some days where I just need a quick cut this HRX is pretty good. And like what i mentioned in the video, you can actually maintain a low (.75”) lawn with this thing without a reel mower, it wouldn’t be as perfect as a reel cut but it will good enough.

how do you like the self propel on this machine? I used an older honda and the self propel totally killed my thumbs.
Works good, you just grip it with one or both hand unlike the one on the HRR216 where you need to press it with your thumb.

You could’ve went straight to HRX and probably won’t need a second mower. I don’t know what it is but i like the cut quality of the hrx. I use my HRR216 mainly for it’s smaller size, just perfect for my 1500sq/ft lawn. How do you like the hrn?
I like the HRN, I did get the rotostop, it’s light weight. Easy to move around obstacles and fun to mow, the quality of cut is awesome, compared to My older hrr 216 which I sold to offset cost.

Me too. Also, a side discharge adapter for the rear would be nice too for this model. That way you are not walking through the clippings.

Geeez what a lawn! How do you manage to cut this short (0.75) and have no bald ( burned) spots? Do you water a lot?
I have Kentucky bluegrass it can tolerate lower cuts unlike fescue. I water 2x a week totaling 1” of water. Typically you get bald spots from an uneven lawn, mine is relatively flat. 👍🏼

For 3/4 acre people should stick to reel mower.i will. Unless they have some health issues.

I think it depends how hot summers are where folks live whether they would survive frequent mowing in 90 plus degrees using a push reel.
@@wayneessar7489 I used to be a body builder so I spoke in that sense, I think you are right in hot weather it's impossible to reel mow. Electric would be a good option.

I had a heart attack in 2011 push mowing with my Silent Scott and the fear has only subsided in the last two years.
I love the look but keeping the reel speed up on varying terrain became a 'reel' challenge for me.

@@wayneessar7489 I can understand, I met with road accident toobbroke couple of bones that is why I said I used to be a body builder we all go through bad things in our lives and reel moving on not a flat terrain is huge burden too. best option is battery electric mover, edgers etc. Have a good day.
Old vs new honda their nothing much in it ok new one got 10% more power but you dont really need it , and why would you want to cut high grass, good video

i dont know why people like this mower so much. i cut grass all day everyday and this is the worse machine ive ever had. good engine yes but cut quality and the the overlap is the worse. i feel like i take longer to cut the grass with this machine then a basic lawnboy because of the overlap. no side discharge. rear discharge makes clumps. anyone else have experience with this machine? put a toro 30 timemaster on that lawn and compare the cut
I have this new HRX, and love it. BUT my 12 year old Toro Super Recycler is better for in many aspects. Ease of use, cut quality, and even noise level. I prefer the Personal Pace
drive on the Toro. It’s very nimble in tight quarters. Hate to rain on the Honda parade!
