This "next level" hackery that DP is referencing, is really just everyday normal old BMW problems. Always fun to see someone tackle it though, great video!
I have a screw in the same place on my e36 ...
Smoked out front and new tail lights ties the overall silver and black theme together so well 🤌🤌🤌
Great series! Note: North American BMW's with bumper side marker lights did NOT have fender markers...ever. The Euro spec ones had fender markers, but no bumper side markers. So definitely a poorly done add on. Car looks so good. Keep it up!
Also the wire for the sidemarker plugs right into the city light at the top of the headlight
Pre build year 1992 BMWs didn't have the fender lights, post 1992 cars all had the fender light. All of them had the bumper side marker light.
Good info, Omar. I missed that detail.
Seriously waiting for this episode. Love to see your content and energy. Hope you guys exceed in every aspect. Love from Pakistan.
I gotta say the rewarding feeling of all of that effort fixing up a car like that up has to feel great. BMW’s are a pain, but when it’s done up like this car…it looks so good from the side profile
PT: "I love DEPO lights"
M539 Restorations intensifies
A lurker and watcher for a while…just wanted to say thanks to Pete and Dave for their run at Modified, one of my favorite magazines. I’m a rotary guy and enjoying the diverse cars covered on the channel, thanks!
Great to see a long time Modified fan here!
Usually the bottom trim on the M5 is two tone, not body colored like yours. Thanks DP for correcting the badge placement!
It’s amazing how a few small changes make a big difference . Looks much better .
I really enjoy watching you guys projects that attempt to leave no stone unturned and treat an older performance car to the love it deserves. But...... I also enjoy this project a lot. Sometimes you have to just tune something up a little and drive it. The side marker light wires zip ties up out of the way is just fine for us mere mortals! Keep it up!
Man this series is great. Takes me back to my younger years spending all my days on the Bimmerforums talking E34's and complaining about all these common issues. US Spec cars only had the bumper trim lights, the euro spec only had the side markers, I think they also added them to later model cars, but I only ever owned '90s and '91s. So us US guys always usually wanted to ditch the lights but I'm guessing euro guys wanted to ADD the lights... the grass is always greener I guess. Seems like this guy wanted to add the side markers at whatever means necessary lol. This is a great build, thanks for sharing, can't wait to see you guys drive this thing. Such an underappreciated car... hand built!
Edit: Also be careful of those DEPO Taillights, the seals are prone to failure and they'll start letting water in the trunk. Just E34 Things...
I had a 1995 540i....the E34 is the peak of BMW styling, imo. Would LOVE another one.
This looks so damn clean now, especially with the smoke and clear, awesome job as usual
as an owner of a E36, you are definitely making me start to think about updating all the trim on my car....thanks PT
Another outstanding episode from TH-cam’s best automotive archeologists 😀
Wow, what a great refresh of the M5. It’s such a classic shape and your fixes are clean and modern, while not looking too restomod.
You guys make me feel like I can tackle these projects. Though, I do have some serious FOMO with used car prices as they are now...
Just got done with installing a stand alone on my M5, long live E34 M5 !
Which one are you running? Ive been looking into options that use the factory harness
@@speedacademy I bought a Vems kit from Uk, using factory harness but had to wire in M50 throttle position sensor
Thanks for the link about the Digi Sync. Would love to see an update about using this tool to tune the ITBs. Calibrating my 91 stroker with a 4 channel Carbtune was time consuming enough to sync the ITBs. Having all 6 channels to monitor at the same time is a God send. Also, having a digital reading instead of watching the mercury levels bounce makes it all the better tool to switch too! Thanks for these videos on the E34 M5, have been enjoying them all. Great job! Really looking forward to the next video!
Love this series. Can’t wait for exhaust and possibly intake!!
Just sat down to eat breakfast and this immediately pops up. Lifting my spirits a little bit during finals week, thank you guys!!
that really freshen the look a notch. especially with the taillights.
You did a fantastic job. It looks so much better now.
Loving this series.
E34 M5 is in my top 5 for sure.
The Ebay Motors BMW is looking the part. Good job Pete and Dave.
Love this I don’t have an m5 but love e34 platform. Also I broke my first trim I took off and the rear one lol
Nice build. The car is in fairly good shape for it's age and no major accidents. Hope you will enjoy as much as me, i had one in 1994, sold at 1999 when i go for my military service. I own f10 lci now but i really miss e34... But mostly i miss is my dads Alpina B11 3.5 which is totaled before we bought the e34. True Handbuilt performance cars. Todays cars are much powerfull with turbos but they can never achieve the beatiful sound and throttle response of an n/a inline six.
Hey guys, I’m loving this project!
Just one thing that I’ve noticed: The BMW logo on the rear looks a little crooked. I don’t know if I’m too perfectionist 😂😂 but I guess that doesn’t seems to be original.
Keep rocking with the projects and cheers from Brazil! 🇧🇷
We found that adhesion promotor plus the SEM black trim paint works wonders!
I think the wheels really set this rebuild off. Never thought I’d ever like that style wheel but it looks fresh AF!
chrome covered amber bulbs for the clear section of the new tails is a must!
Just a beater 🤯 What the h…For sure a great classic and prices for these in Europe has sky 🚀
The M5 is lookin great! This would definitely be a sweet daily driver.
Those headlights and fog lights are. Tight!!
Had major Ronin flashbacks with the final look (no idea what BMW was actually used in that movie). Love how it's coming together.
The trim black paint is 👌🏻 used it all throughout my e30
That car looks awesome. I used to be a newer is better guy but I have converted, old beaters are the way to go. With a bit of TLC and some wrenching the smiles per mile are nearly endless.
Love the car. Brings back memories. I purchased one new in 1991,
The car looks so good with those wheels. Awesome taste as always Pete!
Those gotta be the sexiest wheels I've seen on any BMW ever.
My favorite thing on the car is probably the throwing star wheels
Gents, just love this e36. Great job!
Looks badass Pete! Very updated!
That looks better! I'd have another silver BMW in a heartbeat. Great series guys 👍🏻
The car looks a lot better now. The rear trim plate, called the heckblende has made for a huge difference changing it, the front side markers were standard on EU models so I'm suspecting somebody may have tried to change the car to EU spec before you. But it is certainly the right way to go for an e34. 👌🏾
Great work done, great series and very interesting to watch. I personally like the original wheels better, either than that I wouldn't do anything else differently. 👍🏾 Great work. 💯
A little lip spoiler would be the cherry on top of this beaut
Those minor changes look great!! I dig it!
M5 coming along nicely guys. Looking good!
E34 actually has 2 generations. One of them was produced in early years about from 1988-1993 and after that BMW factory made a little changes with visuality. I am not sure what it is really called, but that new models are known as "Executive" or "Restailing".I have one of that kind of Executive one and general difference is that turn light indicators are added on front wings, nose grill is more wider and the lines on the bonets is different too. Your wings are DIY and reason is simple - Executive wings is EXPENSIVE and rearly in good condition :D
car is so clean i’m jealous . I always been a fan of the E30 - E36 . There just untouchable in price. Definitely is a cruiser. Like to see some velocity stacks on the ITB’s
I will also add that since you upgraded the headlights, you can use the sidemarker wires to go right into the city lights for the smileys
Very nice build. Definitely prefer the oem headlights. Wish you guys had more time to refresh the front bumper and fix the little details like the headlight washers.
Man this thing looks so good! I’m so jealous 🤤
PT loving the tlc you and Dave are showing this classic M5. Pro tip for you DIYers…if you find yourself reaching for a drywall screw when repairing body work…consider switching to wood working as a hobby? 😂
Speed Academy beater = my high society
Great save. Front m5 badge still missed placed 😉
Looks incredible guys, lot of nostalgic euro vibes going on with this build!
Loving how the build is going!!
Love it. Beautiful, clean, and classy.
Love the love for the classic bmw's here. keep it up!
Best head lights for the e34's are the euro spec Hella Smiley. Have to order then from euro , they have a great feature where the light beam actually is bent at 45 degress and project across to the passenger side and you can see the tops of the stops signs...Not sure why in the US these are not standard...But best after market are the Hella Euro Spec Smoked Smilies if you can find them...then you replace the H1 bulbs with Xenon Bulbs and xenon ballasts.....best headlight I have ever drive with except in the snow they wash out
Love this build guys! Thank you for your content!
that gouge on windsheeld wiper is from rubbing it under the hood , that is the issue with the wiper mechanism , bearings is wearing out , you can replace hole mechanism or you can make sleeves from copper and it will work fine .
Sweet dad car daily Pete. I'd like to recommend a cheap easy mods and replace those orange front & rear signal bulbs with LED or maybe if they still make those silverline bulbs. I'd consider using that trim paint on that rear trunk key cylinder too.
Looks super clean 👍 The rear needs a slight drop so the rear tyres just tuck and the car would be level.
oh snaps luckily I bought the license plate frame before it went out of stock :) didn't know its a collectors item now
To paint plastics, you use an adhesion promoter. It is a spray-on product.
Test tone out the speaker wires to see if they are connected. You can even just use a battery and connect the positive and negative will give sound at the speaker
This is gonna be one sick ride, thanks for rescueing this classic car. But...you know what Sreten from M539 thinks about Depo, do you? I can already hear him swinging his hammer :D You should go with some Philips SilverVision Bulbs on the blinkers. I don't like this "Egg-Look" with white or clear glas and then you see the ugly orange Bulb. The Philips Bulbs are "chrome-vaporized" so they look silver but still light up orange, which makes the look of the light so much better.
Its no longer a 20 footer.. its a 5 footer. Big difference guys! 🙌
I always used those pullers for battery terminals but that’s smart
As soon as you said depo headlights Sreten from M539 fainted ... 😂😂
Love this series!
I know it's all personal preference, but I think the amber tail lights looked way better. Clear on silver always looks a little cheesey to me. I don't feel like there's a need to try to make a vintage car look updated. It's vintage, and you can just own that. Thanks for sharing this with us!
Smoked headlights, clear indicators and M5 badges- its like every 518i ever haha
I'm loving that somebody is doing the best M car as a project, but its a shame they keep having to add all the ebay tat.
In all fairness they’re getting most of the important stuff OEM though. It’s not like it’s a resto, just a quick easy series
Amen!
Well it's how to make any bmw up to mid 2000s decent. Original they have way to much grandfather look. Smoked head and fogs with white corners combined withe a decent lowering brings it away from the dull 90s feel.
How cares that everyone does, it's done because it looks nice.
There are OEM clears too.
Amazing work guys keep it up !
20:20 I have the same issue with my E34. The edge of the hood actually makes contact with the wiper and over time it cuts into the wiper arm. I think maybe adjusting the sweep of the wiper would help but adjusting the hood would be more work and make the panels gaps not consistent.
That easy fix is raising up the rear of the Hood latch sliders with washers underneath.
@@Andrew4181975 That would make the hood sit higher than the top of the front fenders
Not sure about the smoked headlights but everything else looks great. E34's have aged extremely well.
Check that gouge on the wiper arm, my E34 M5 has the same and its from the arm hitting the hood when poorly adjusted
I like the side markers.
Next time try using a slightly used gray scuff pad for the plastic I used it to paint a lot of the interior on my SC300, but just a light scuff don’t go all in and create deep scratches
Pisses me off to no end when someone does a hackjob to "fix" something instead of doing it properly the first time.
I'm surprised you can find the trim parts for this car so easily, especially OEM ones. Can't wait to see it finished
I can hear Sreten screaming in the distance, seeing Depo headlights and non-OEM plastics.
Wiper tool?... That's a battery terminal puller😕 well i just found a new job for that tool. Thanks Speed Academy 💪
Funny enough, they are both the same tool
@@speedacademy that's awesome😆
BEAUTIFUL!! Love the wheels!!
My brain nearly exploded when he put the grill badge in
Funny thing is i always wanted those us side markers for my euro e34😂 i think they look cool
Looks great. I love those wheels
Fun fact - up until a few years ago all the E34 M5’s were “beaters”. Looking good.
Not for me, The first two Generations of M5s are Holy Grail cars.
How 💀 you wont find a good e34 m5 in Germany under 35k
Looking nice definitely a keeper 👌
Sretan from M539 Restorations is pulling his hair out and screaming over all the Depo stuff, haha
That car looks awesome!
Less sauerkraut more soy sauce 😜. Bmw looks so much better than before, cant wait for the dc2 arrrrrrrrrr to come back🔰❤️
That speaker wiring situation gave me some serious PTSD. You are a patient man lol
Pretty sure the Canadian and US market cars had the side marker in the bumper and European cars on the side marker behind the front tire on fender
The rear licence plate surround that you bought is a European/UK version. That's why it doesn't have the same square bit to fit your sized plate.
Why they didn't just spray the original one with Trim paint is beyond me??? US cars with Euro plate holders are dumb.
love the videos! would have left the oem rear lights on, looked like a very clean set.
such a good series
Very nice transformation man. GG
Just put some beefy magnets on the back side of that bumper trim, and similarly on the rear of the license plate. Pop it on, and you won't damage your bumper trim.
