    This is very practical, over the years I have seen pedestal track used, this by far is the best application. Very stable in ground movement from expansion and contraction. Freezing and thawing, Desert dry then heavy rain. Good Job.

      Edwyn - Thanks! Yes ladderline has worked very well, i am using the existing ladderline and re shaping to the design and no problems changing the curvature of the material after 3 years in place. The stanchion system is also very sturdy, handles the the weather of hot and cold well also. I screw the track down enough to keep in place, the track can expand or contract with the weather. Thanks for tuning in. SKol! Ron

      John are you referring to the the slats of the ladder line those pieces? To cut those are used a chopsaw or a circular saw with a stop affixed to the tool rest measured at 4 inches. One of my other videos I think episode nine or around there shows how I make the ladder line and what pieces you’ll need as far as material goes. Ron, I am planning on creating my layout outdoors like yours.
    I was going to use MTH Realtrax but someone told me that I should use Atlas Flex track because it was more tolerant to weather. I think that you used Atlas track and so I will ask you, what is your opinion? Would you use Atlas again?
    I was advised to cut my flex track to the various lengths rather than buying a lot of small pre-made pieces.
    Do you cut your own track and connect them together?
    Do you have a preferred method for cutting track?
    What tools do you use for cutting and connecting track?
    Since your layout is done, I guess its too late to ask for a video on how to cut and connect custom lengths of track.

    • @baldypalmsrailroad
      @baldypalmsrailroad  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brent, I have used the Altas O silver nickle track for more than 5 years now, and have not had any adverse effects on the track. The track ties are UV resistant and have held up in my opinion - great. Take it I live in So Cal, where the summers can be over 100F and down to the 30's F at times. I found the flex track does not flex as much as I thought it would. So I opted to go with sectional track, on the long straights I do use the 30" long section when practical. I have not experimented with the MTH track, but from reading form posts, I read more positives for the Altas O track for outdoor use. I have not compared the two brands. My experience I'd say Atlas O silver nickle is the better choice. So using the sectional track I did come across times where I would need to cut in a custom piece of track. The tool I use the cut off wheel and a Dremel tool. A Dremel is the model railroader all around must have tool. I also use the Dremel with a wire brush to clean the track area before installing the rail joiners. One thing about using sectional track is when you're building the ladder line section you can dry fit a few sections at a time in building the bends of the ladder line. Let me see if I can find the video of me doing this.
      I also do not solder my joints, I found that adding track feeders every five or six feet is a good practice in providing good connectivity. The track needs to be able to expand and contract due to temperature changes, having a solid soldered track may cause the track to pop or pull off the ties, causing miss alignments and train derailments.
      Hope this helps in your decision in to which track to get. I'd like to see how your progress develop as you build your layout, and as always, I'd be glad to answer any question you have.. Ron//

    Question, how come you didn't bury your PVC conduit in the beginning to 18" (to top of conduit) in the ground? Your depth is good for 30 volts or less?

    • @baldypalmsrailroad
      @baldypalmsrailroad  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello MK thanks for your question. Reason is the ground in the layout area is very hard clay rocky soil, with a lot of surface roots from the area palm trees. Also to reduce the taunting task of trenching so much. With the conduit on the stanchions, the foot print is much smaller, easy to reroute track if needed.

      Brent the material I use for the horizontal ladder line roadbed is PVC door trim products I got at Lowes. On my website I have the Lowes part numbers for you to reference to. www.oscaletrainsbyron.com/roadbed
      The cross bar from the vertical PVC pipe and the ladder line is a 1" pvc Tee that I trimmed on side off the measure 3" across. Way Cool. Thank you for providing so much detail. Im here in Sacramento.
      Im going to use the PVC pipes to support the ladder rack. Im still not sure if I am going to use the sand and cement mixture you were using or I might just cut the end of the PVC at 45 degrees to create a sharp edge and pound it into the ground with a rubber mallet.
      We have hard pan up here once you get more than 6" below the surface.

    • @baldypalmsrailroad
      @baldypalmsrailroad  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just flew back from Sac yesterday...I was up in Redding over the weekend. I'd get a 2" tulip bulb auger bit to drill your holes. You can use regular sand too, just pack in the hole and pour some water in the hole, Its should set up nicely and be sturdy enough. I used a 1 to 4 ratio of cement to make like a slurry mix. Pounding in the stanchion post may go off target if they bounce of a rock of something..
