National Anthem: Poland - Mazurek Dąbrowskiego [REMASTERED]

- The Polish national anthem was written in July 1797 in Reggio near Bolonia by Józef Wybicki, one of the organisers of General Jan Henryk Dąbrowski’s Polish Army in Italy. The theme of the original poem was a novel idea in the era of the nation state (that is, most European nations were made up of eponymous nationalities), that the nation does not need a territory to be a nation, it only needs a group of people. This idea was a timely one, as Poland had only been partitioned out of existence only two years earlier. Several more times in subsequent Polish history would an independent Polish nation appear then disappear from the map, which could explain why the song resonates with Poles even today. The original poem also mentions several Polish war heroes of the time, as well as heroes of past Polish wars; also Napoleon is mentioned, as the commanding officer of Dąbrowski and as an example to be held up.

It's not like that! The Italian provinces formed and developed independently, they united only when they felt that they formed a people! The verse "Marsz, marsz, Dąbrowski, z ziemi włoskiej do Polski" is found in the chorus of the marzurca - literally "March, oh Dąbrowski, from the Italian land to Poland" thus inciting the general to continue fighting until the liberation of Poland.
History teaches us that in reality, Poland had to wait until 1918 to "reappear" on the maps of Europe.
The Italian anthem, on the other hand, "The Song of the Italians" was written by Goffredo Mameli around 1847, fifty years after the Polish one, at the beginning of the Italian Risorgimento.
Even Italy was still under Austrian rule, but dragged by the enthusiasm for the great changes that were hoped for, the patriotic songs praising liberation multiplied.
The most popular was precisely that of Mameli, a real incitement to insurrection.
In what will later become the Italian anthem, the verse is found: "the Eagle of Austria has already lost its feathers, already the blood of Italy and the Polish blood drank with the Cossack but the heart burned them".
Austria of the Habsburgs (of which the double-headed eagle was the imperial symbol) was in decline (the swords sold are the mercenary troops with which the ranks of the imperial army were full) and Mameli summons the people one last time italics to give the coup de grace to the Austrian domination with a parallelism with Poland. Between 1772 and 1795, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, together with Russia (the "Cossack"), invaded Poland. But the blood of the two oppressed peoples, the Italian and the Polish, can turn into poison through the uprising against the foreign oppressor.

I've always been fascinated with Poland's history. Imagine how much of a powerhouse in Europe Poland could've been if the Poland Lithuanian Commonwealth still existed and didn't go through the hardships of the 1600's and 1700's.
I'm also from Owen Sound Ontario and in WW2 the small town was chosen by the Polish government in exile and the Canadian government as the location of a training camp where a group of Polish officers would train a group of Polish immigrants from Canada, the USA and a few from Cuba to serve in the Polish army in Europe. The soldiers trained here took part in and some died at the Battle of Monte Cassino. My grandparents live a short walk from the remains of the shooting range where the troops practised.

It's amazing to see what the internet has done for the respect that Poland so deserves. Before the Internet became popular, if you asked your average American about Poland, only the smartest would know they were the first country the Nazis attacked. Most Americans cannot even point to it on the map, but opinions are changing, now that everyone can see how important and how incredible Poland was and still is.

I think this is a great point. Many Americans only knew Polish jokes, bit nothing about poland itself! I'm glad to see the recently increase in awareness of the Polish contributions to WWII, their fighting spirit in general and in particular their assistance to ukraine over the past month. What a fantastic, generous, proud bunch of people. I'm proud to be Polish-American!
