    The first time i came in contact with Jimmy was in 1965 when he brought in his ‘fuzz box’ and played some riffs to the backing of The Manish Boys recording with Davy [Jones] Bowie of, “I Pity the Fool’, and ‘Take My Tip’. Davy was the soloist on both tracks. He picked up the songs very quickly. I think I’m right in saying the ‘fuzz Box was a new thing. Drummer of The Manish Boys.

    I was lucky enough to hear the Jimmy Page Yardbirds in 1968 at Hidden Valley north of Toronto. They were spectacular. Jimmy Page was as advertised. He did a lot of Hendrix -like things but he had a more subtle touch. The band would play quietly while he played complicated, jazzy solos.

      @@patriciafoster3347 they had a lot of great bands up there over a 3 year period. The Hollies when Graham Nash was still with them, the McCoys who were fantastic, the Sparrow, a Toronto band who changed their name to Steppenwolf, recorded Born To Be Wild and became famous. The funny thing about the Yardbirds was that Jeff Beck had just left the band and Jimmy Page wasn’t as well known outside of Britain. That changed in a hurry!

      Antonioni really wanted The Who, but their manager Chris Stamp was upset that Antonioni cast David Hemings in the lead over Terrence Stamp, Chris’s brother. I never really cared for the Yardbirds. There was a band that was less than the sum of its parts. Every time anyone mentions them, it’s like they’re talking about the Million Dollar Quartet. They’re more a bit of trivia than a memorable fount of music.

      You shouldn't use the term "Greatest", when Clapton, Beck and Hendrix were all a part of that period as well.
      Considering the abilities, creativity, and influence these guitarists had on the future of rock music, I think referring to them as the four greatest rock guitarists would be more appropriate.
      We shouldn't have to choose just one.
      They all contributed to the genre in their own individual ways.

    • @michellethroop9054
      @michellethroop9054 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@russellparratt9859 I agree, they are/were ALL Great guitarists, but IMHO, Jimmy Page is far and away the BEST. I loved Hendrix and Jeff Beck, too, Clapton, not so much. I just didn't listen to E.C. very much. I had a one track, musically speaking, in my teens and twenties. So MUCH SO, that I named my first son, James Patrick, after James Patrick Page!!! And THAT was ONLY because his dad wouldn't "let" me name him after Robert Plant, who I have Loved ALL MY LIFE. I stand by my statement/opinion, Jimmy Page is the GREATEST GUITARIST on the planet. Although, if Hendrix were still with us, it MIGHT be a tie. MAYBE.

      @russellparratt9859 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@michellethroop9054 Well, I think you're writing from a bit of a subjective viewpoint, but I'm not going to argue over it.
      He certainly put the runs on the board, with his huge input to the 60's studio scene, and then the groundbreaking work with Led Zeppelin, who changed the direction of rock music.
      I remember when Whole Lotta Love was released. Awesome.
      Hendrix was a complete natural, occupying a place that no other rock guitarist could reach. Clapton and Beck acknowledged that, but they fed off each other, in a form of friendly rivalry.
      Clapton changed the sound of rock, with the Bluesbreakers album, then with Cream, setting a standard of heavy rock that inspired many bands afterwards. But, I don't think the musical chemistry of Bruce, Baker and Clapton has been surpassed, because they were the pioneers, but also because of the nature of what they created. It was of it's time, but also timeless.
      Beck, as a guitarist, has continued to experiment, and both Clapton and Page have acknowledged his greatness.
      The areas he worked in didn't attract the huge popularity of Led Zeppelin, but musically, he has led the way on many occasions, from the Yardbirds, to the rock-fusion era, to more recent explorations in new techniques, but always with musicality to the fore. Getting back to Jimmy Page, I thought his solo in Nobody's Fault But Mine, from the Celebration Day DVD, was just pure creative genius.
      I could go on writing. It's a period of rock music history that I've had a huge interest in. 😉 🎸🎶

    • @shilohnoone4632
      @shilohnoone4632 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Huck Finn He certainly played on the 'Gloria' sessions but rhythm guitar , Moretti on lead guitar as he did with with the Kinks Vick Flick many times on lead and Jimmy on rhythm

    • @shilohnoone4632
      @shilohnoone4632 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Davies will confirm and often he played lead guitar but credit was given to Page , the Sessions are misty even Page cannot remember , much is assumption till proven wrong

    • @shilohnoone4632
      @shilohnoone4632 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Huck Finn Listen to the whammy guitar on ''Baby Please Don't Go'' , you will firstly hear its not a Stratocaster and secondly not Page's whining riffs . Page played rhythm as he did on many Kinks songs, whilst Vick Flick played the guitar breaks. Also often the Dave Davies version would be released , whilst the demo was Page which caused immense frustration and being the sixties nobody can ever remember . Page played on hundreds of demos but often not said was he played rhythm, whilst everybody assume lead guitar because he was naturally apt to rock n' roll riffs . So was Big Jim Sullivan etc etc

      Actually "rock n roll" came out of jazz and country. Rock n roll is African-American slang for "fast & vigorous" dancing.

    I've always thought that instead of smashing a guitar onstage that the groundbreaking guitarist of the Sixties should have used their guitar as either a cricket wicket, baseball bat, or what have you...and smashed a cat instead.
    I know he wasn't English and all {though he did break through in England}, but just imagine if Hendrix lit a cat onstage at Monterrey instead of his guitar.
    Think about it. I have.

      +mike jones i find it amazing how so many at least see the need to mention he took drugs or even bag him for it and its effects on him when 99 percent of the population today is hooked on all manner of lab made drugs just so they can cope with their menial lives, this guy had alot more stress in his life than anyone iknow and so took what he needed that was available to him to cope at the time and it didnt prevent him from being a huge contributer to music and a real legend and a great and intelligent and interesting man with a true gift for guitar that he was able to share with us.. he also quit unlike all the prescription junkies always making these comments...if u dont have something respectful to say about a man like this dont bother commenting... sick of all the disrespect these days and hypocritical prescription wankers always on about drugs.. and i dont see any of these dickheads mentioning artists they do respect probably because their complete morons with no idea what there talking about
