Make a Yoga Pants Waistband for Ready-to-Wear Jeans

- I had the opportunity to go help my daughter in her 3rd grade classroom to Tye Dye T-Shirts! I couldn't say NO to that... But I also didn't want to cancel Fab Fit Friday! So, here you go, a pre-recorded episode that hits two birds with one stone! I have had a few requests for a tutorial showing how to make a Yoga Pants Style Waistband for Ready-to-Wear Jeans & I had to take in the waistline of my Mom's LL Bean Jeans. This technique can be used on any pair of ready-to-wear jeans that you can pull on over your hips with them zipped up! Because my Mom's jeans were really big on her, I decided to cut off the original waistband and add some front/back waist darts to reduce the ease along the waistline a little bit (verse taking in the side seams). Then I added a Ponte Knit Stretch Waistband with elastic inserted in side. Fixing my Mom's jeans was a simple waistband switch, so I also shared how to take off a waistband and remove the right fly and zipper to create a faux front fly!

:) So comfortable! Thanks for watching
Wonderful!
Thanks for watching! I hope you give it a try!
Oh man! I wish I had seen this yesterday!! I spent so long taking my jeans apart making a skirt. Also, face razors are available at dollar tree in a 3 pack. Subscribed!! Thanks!!
Welcome to my channel!! ... Excellent find at the dollar store! Thanks for watching
Thank you for this video. I have lost weight and have many pairs of stretch slacks that need adjusting.
You have saved me from buying new pants. I love this.
So happy to hear that this helps you take in your pants!! Thanks for following along with me!
Just what I needed for my husband, lots of unlicking to do now 😊
Glad this will help you fix your husband's pants! Thanks for watching
My tip is … I pin the stretched elastic band end to my ironing board cover or the arm of my arm chair, then tug and cut with scissors or rip with seam ripper. 😍
I love your channel, I’m learning so much.
That's a great tip! Thank you for following along with me!
Good job.
Thanks so much! ...and thanks for watching
❤WOW !! Thank you
I went on a hunt to seam rip something… anything, and it’s a dream. 🥰
:)))) It can be satisfying (especially when you don't also make a hole in the fabric!)
A couple more issues that this resolves spring to my mind:
Increasing the rise (I detest anything less than high waisted trousers of any kind)
Comfort for those recovering from surgery or with medical conditions that cause pain in the area usually covered by a waistband. My mum has a hernia in her lower stomach and yoga waistbands are perfect for her.
I made her a pair of joggers and used the maternity expansion pack from the Patterns for Pirates Peg Legs (free pattern) for the ‘waistband’ which gave her smooth, high waisted coverage with no centre front seam to irritate or cause discomfort.
Yessss!!! Thank you for sharing all these ideas! ...and for watching!
I was looking for a tutorial like this recently. I’m making a pair of shorts that I want to use a yoga waistband on and here it is. Thanks so much for explaining in detail. I wasn’t going to put elastic in the waistband but now I will. 😊
I'm so happy you found this!! I use this technique to add stretchy waistbands to my yoga pants, pull on pants of all kinds and my skorts! ...I don't need elastic because I'm basically a rectangle without a defined waistline. (A defined waistline needs a little elastic to need it secure it to a smaller waistline because it's harder to sew a smaller knit band to the wider top edge of the pants (If you have a wider high hip below a smaller waistline). I hope this helps! Thanks for fitting along with me
I ordered the stitch removers! Thank you for the link and great demo.
:) You're going to love them!! Thanks so much for watching
Thank you. I was already considering doing this with my old jeans to make them more comfy. Thanks for showing me how. (Isn’t nice to know how to sew? I love tweaking my clothes!)
Yes!!! I love that I can "fix" things as well as sew new things :) Thanks for watching
Thank you. My waistband are different to this, most of the time i make them out of old tights without putting elastic inside it as i can't handle anything that tight as it hurts to much. I also buy maternity jeans from the thrift shops and sometimes they have the elastic inside them, i just take them out. But still very helpful. 😊 💕
My pleasure! Thanks for sharing your waistband ideas too & for watching
Thank you for all your videos, I'm learning a lot ❤. I'm from Sweden and I'm watching and learning ❤
I'm so happy to hear! Thanks for watching and sewing along with me!
Thank you! Cool tool! I want it. Super tutorial! Hope all enjoyed the tie-dye!
Had so much fun with the Tie Dye... The 3rd graders were so cute... and I loved watching my daughter in her element, she is such a good teacher :) Thanks for watching
Thanks for the tutorial. This is such a great money saving tip.
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
You can do the same thing with the seam ripper. Use it with the little red bead downward between the seam and rip!
Yessss that's the proper way to use the seam ripper... but I've cut my fabric when I'm not careful... This Seam remover is almost "Jennifer" Proof!! Thanks for watching
Another good topic ❤
Thanks so much! ...and thanks for following along with me
Great tutorial and yes, I need that tool!

Have you ever tried an electric seam remover? Would love for you to do a review on one.
Ooooh an electric seam remover, that sounds like something very COOL. Stay tuned for that! thanks for suggestion :) and thanks for watching
Good tutorial..i loved it!❤
Glad you liked it!! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this, Jen! I’ve tried to figure out how to eliminate the waistband and snap on a pair of jeans and add elastic but your way is better! I have some stretch denim but hadn’t thought of using a knit. I’d like to add about 2” of height to reach my waistline. Do you think it would work to just make a wider new band and sew a casing at the top?
-Addie
PS your waistband looks like a nice belt…it inspired me to consider a contrasting color!
My Pleasure! You can definitely make a wider waistband... when you put the elastic inside... make sure you push it up to the top fold of the waistband before stitching it in place at the side seams and center back. Hope this helps! thanks for watching
I just saw this video yesterday and I really like the idea of replacing waistbands with a yoga pant waistband. I do have a question, though. My jeans won't go over my hips unless the zipper is down. Is there a way to adapt the yoga band to slim fitting jeans?
That's a great question. I have a good idea for that... stay tuned, I'll do a tutorial for this for Fit Tip Tuesday next week, thanks for following along with me
Fantastic tips Jen. I plan to put this one to use right away. I heard you say you were using a Ponte on your Mom's. What other fabrics would you recommend for the yoga waistband for denim or twill and for knits pants?
Thanks! I did use Ponte Knit for this pair. Any bottom weight knit works great for these waistbands. If I had had any of my Performance Sports Knit that I make Yoga Pants from, I would have used that. I would use the same fabrics for denim, twill and knit! Hope this helps, thanks for watching
@@JSternDesignsI've actually never made yoga pants, so this is very helpful. Thank you for the additional information.
Thanks so much for this. I am making jeans and didn't want all the extra fabric around my waist so I was wondering how to do this. I am allergic to knits that are not 100% cotton, would this work using 100% cotton knit?
:) As long as you can insert elastic into the waistband, cotton knit will work... (By itself, it might not be firm enough to keep your jeans up! Hope that helps :) Thanks for watching
Thanks so much for the reply. I also want to thank you for all the sewing information you put out. By listening to another TH-cam on how to draft a pant pattern, then your information on fitting, I am finally able to make pants for myself from cotton fabric without stretch, other than the cotton knit pants that are fairly easy to fit. It has literally taken me 14 years to get to this point. Since my hips are only 4" from my waist, trying to fit a commercial pants pattern never worked. Also since I have knee issues, pants always pulled and your video on how to move the knee portion of the pants pattern to fit a knee that is swollen worked wonders. This was another big part of my fitting challenge. Thank you so much for sharing your wealth of information in a way that is easy to understand and put into practice!!
Is there a special way to do a horizontal stitch through the center of the band?
That's funny that you ask me about that...I've been looking at waistbands that have rows of horizontal stitching to create a drawstring casing...and flatten the gathers. I'm going to play with that, I think the important thing is going to be stretching the elastic to equal the knit fabric while stitching! Stay tuned and thanks for watching
Kai in Chinese means open. Very appropriate name for it. Seam opener.
That's so cool, thanks for sharing that! Kai also makes the best fabric scissors :) Thanks for watching
We want pictures of the tie-dying! Some of us don't use Facebook.🙁
