Storm did have hives the other day. I suspect it was from contact with something in the hay. Sometimes certain weeds harvested with the mixed hay (especially in big round bales) will result in allergic reactions (hives). The day he had it he had his blanket off and was lying down in close proximity to the round bale shelter. Good they went away ..but I'd get rid of the source :)
Hi Laura- why not have the vet come to show you the ropes around de-budding and give you the tips and tricks? That way, you can have a hands on experience and watch from a trained professional. The vet will have to come for the neutering/check ups anyways. I think you should keep the goats you have and sell the babies. There will always be cuter babies and it’s likely no matter how they were bred more bucklings are bound to happen.
@@Flower_Eq she knows more than you, you can lose the attitude doesn't look like u have ever had goats so before you go after someone u need to fix yourself before u try and fix them
Ya. He will be here soon. I will definitely get him to show me. I feel way more comfortable with my goat breeder friend that has been disbudding for over 20 years though. She has way more experience then our vet.
@@DayByDayVlogs that’s awesome that you have a friend, can she come and show you? I find things so much easier when someone shows you the proper way. Cattle branding is the same, you need to see the actual process before you can get comfortable.
If you are wanting registered goats to show and the breed is not polled, surely the breed standard would require them to have their horns intact. You’d be better off getting a polled variety to start with I reckon.
Weed ‘em and reap never seem to have any issue with showing their goats after debudding them as youngsters. It’s safer for handlers, as well as the other goats around them if they don’t have the horns.
I am from the same climate as you. I am from Kingston, ONTARIO. If storm has had it once what teatment did you guys use at the time? Did you have a vet do some tests and rule out rain rot and that its gone? There were tons of people commentig about hives and visable lumps on Storm so we all see them. We are just concerned.. and want to sure everything is okay. P.s I only commented about it 2 times. I didnt keep on saying he had rain rot.
It probably wasn't you then! Yup we had the vet confirm but they don't need to confirm that they are gone. We cleaned it wirh an antibacterial and took all the scabs off when they came loose. The only issue with it being hives is that it was just the hair and not a raised rash on the skin. It was gone when we brushed him.
I agree with you Laura Sophie has to learn that she shouldn’t get rid of one animal just because something cuter comes along, Rocky is beautiful and would find it harder as you said to integrate into a new home herd.. where as winston is young and would find it easier, but you never know where they end up so I think you should keep a little paddock just for your wethers as pets 🫣🤣 at least you know they will all be loved forever x
Does anybody know what the purpose of their horns are? Laura doesn't seem to understand what the importance of horns are. I still don't understand why you insist on disbudding/dehorning goats. God gave them horns for a reason. Showing has come so commercialized Winston is quiet due to the fact he is still with mom and their is no siblings. Goats that are separated from their moms and siblings early have a tendency to be vocal. Usually when they have their own kids 65% of them stop being vocal. Personally I love vocal goats it tells me where my herd is. Also I had bells on some of them when my guardian was not in the field with them.
I agree. The girls should be responsible enough to be safe around the horned goats. The only reason my goats don't have horns is because they are therapy goats
I get it... I hate disbudding nut milk goats aren't supposed to have horns. It's Def Important for showing but also for longevity of our herd. Horses can cause a lot of issues. I know why goats are born with horms... It's very different being born in the wild vs living on a small farm though. When I say Winston is quiet I mean that some babies are born making a ton of noise when you pick them up. Some babies are definitely noiser even when alone. Some goats are way more talkative by nature and disposition. I agree... I do like a talkative goat but I like the quiet ones a lot too.
I respect your choice to do it yourself but our of genuine concern, for you and the goats and how I personally believe you should get your vet to do it. I admit I'm not very knowledgeable in goats and this could be intirely safe but until I know for sure I believe you should ask your vet. I respect your choice to do it yourself however.
Many goat breeders do it themselves as well as banding. I enjoy being able to learn all aspects of care for our goats. If I didn't feel capable, I would have someone else do it for sure!
I used to help with disbudding our goat kids with the iron many years ago. We also tried to burn the scent gland on the bucks; then we sprayed the horn buds with blue kote(I believe that's how it's spelled). I don't think you should keep any male goats that you aren't using for breeding. It's the same as culling your chickens. I think you are a doing a great job🙂
We used to use a cat collar on my yorkepoodle when he was a puppy to keep from stepping on him! Maybe it would work for Ellie too? Cat collars have bells on them already and some of them are really cute! ❤
You should use analgesics as it can be painful to a 3day old it's really not necessary and you should really no what you are doing it's more fore the farmers than for the goats
Laura, I bought a registered polled buck for my herd, so I have a 50/50 chance of my babies being polled also. If you don't want horns you should look into adding some polled genes to your herd.
Oh dear! I couldn’t choose who goes. Poor little Rocky came first but then Winston is just a baby. Keep them both and start fresh with a rule for next few. ❤
it’s not about the idea of something cuter coming along, and that’s why the others get sold. It’s about what brings the best genetics to your herd, ESPECIALLY as a buck. It’s always a tough decision to make, as they are so cute and adorable. The sooner you let the go, the easier it will be to do so! My boss has had to realise this, after keeping every foal until it’s 3😂 so this year, the 4 due will be put up for sale straight away to sell as weanlings. Have a look at goat confirmation guides. Take standing photos of a side profile, and of the rump and you can always reach out to a professional goat breeder to ask for their advice on which goat has better potential. It’s ok to ask for help!! It’s really fun learning about genetics and confirmation when you get into it. It could be a fun breeding project for you guys - everyone has to start somewhere!
I love learning about conformation, and Winston definitely has a lot of good genetics on his dad's side. Genetics are so important even in a pet goat herd because it's so important for longevity! Having said that, Winston will be a wether like rocky, so the same rules won't apply. He will be a pet and i feel like rocky would have a harder time settling in another herd while babies would find it easier.
I hope Sophie feels better soon🤞 I'm really surprised there are no new kids! Just a thought re dehorning Winston - I would check with your experienced goat friend if there's any chance his horns might grow in deformed after having used the chemical. We inherited a couple of older Angora goats on one property we bought and one of them had very deformed horns. We got the Vet in to knock him out and take them off. That topsoil might grow good pumpkins or garlic. All our horses, cows and goats loved garlic - discovered when one of our horses had a cold. Nevada loved it so much one day she shocked us when she grabbed our Labrador by the skin on her back and tossed her aside😳 It took a bit of working out but guess Tess was hoping to hoover up any Nevada was unlikely to drop. Poor Tess was so traumatised she wouldn't go in a paddock Nevada was in or tag along on rides for a couple of years. Chasing bunnies through the horse paddock on a different property finally resolved her trauma😂🥰

They can't keep every goat. I watch goat videos all time. People give goats away if it isn't beneficial to the heard breeding wise or if genes aren't a fit. So I can understand them not wanting to keep him. They will need the space for goat's thar they will be using for bleeding. He will be fine after a couple of weeks of being at his new home.
