    Common mistake number 6 - thinking you need a big expensive camera to take great photos ;) Good one mate. Stumbled upon your channel, got yourself a new sub. Have fun in Bali, cant wait to hit the road again. Regards from the north

      Such a great comment. And absolutely true. Someone else mentioned this as well. You can do so much with a starter DSLR

    Thank you for this video! Very helpful! My favorite point was about storytelling. I believe it was the 4th most common mistake you touched on. That was a good example of the field and the picnic basket vs just taking portraits in the field! So true! Great content!

    When watching the video and listening to you, I came to realize I'm shooting beautiful sunsets from different locations and people really love them. But they all look the same ! Yes, the lighting and colors are different but in essence, they're the same. Same perspective, sometimes with reflections of the sky or something else. I'm making a promise to myself now, I'm shooting with a bit more sense, with a story, with a better composition. So thanks for making me think about the next shoot I'm doing !

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great reflection Maurice! It’s so easy to get caught up and capture the same compositions. I hope you get some interesting new perspectives next time you go out and shoot :)

      Same here. I’m trying to wean myself off beautiful, but trite, colorful things like sunsets and flowers. Or I shoot them but don’t share them. 😆

    Absolutely agree about images that tell a story. Often I see pictures from photographers that take the same photos over and over of people, or family, in a nice field. It’s just regurgitated. Like, what are they doing there all dressed up? Lol. Yes, it looks nice, but major lack of dimension without a story. Great video.

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100%, it is regurgitated and doesn't always make a ton of sense. However, my stance has somewhat changed recently regarding that. I don't want to be the TH-camr that bashes someone for shooting something that's been shot before/is boring. That's just part of the creative journey for some people and they learn from it. Shooting in general is a healthy activity, and as a photography teacher I don't want to put up barriers for people when all they really need to be doing is shooting. And shooting anything at that! Still working through this, but want to find a healthy medium on how to teach it :)

    • @ramey.street
      @ramey.street 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s fair. And I can agree with that too. Keep doing great work, Sean. 😊

    This is like the 3rd of your videos I've had recommended to me..let's see if you're worth a sub.
    edit: Yup, worth a sub. Also, you should make a video about setting beginners turn on/off and don't think about. I only just found out the AF assist light helps me focus much better in low light, and in fact, the camera won't let me shoot without focusing that way. I waas told to just shut it off, nothing else, didn't even know it would be useful that way. Another is Auto ISO, I use it but have no idea if my settings for it are good.

    I think one of the mistakes is thinking you need really expensive gear. Well, cameras are pretty expensive, more so depending on the country you live in, but an entry level camera will do everything you need and you probably wont feel limited by it for many years

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great reply, that’s so true. You can do crazy things with a beginner DSLR and a kit lens. I’m actually thinking of buying a beginner DSLR and documenting the process of using it. Fun cameras to use!

    How do in live in the villa? Did you get a permanent resident or extended stay?

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have emergency visas right now, so we can stay until they end the state of emergency. Indonesia is an easy country to stay in for long periods of time even without the emergency visa.

    BS, I shoot in the middle of the day all the time. Most of the time I have no choice. Thus fallacy of shooting during golden hour has to stop.

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can shoot whenever you want, absolutely. If you want to shoot in the middle of the day, more power to you! I think most photographers preach golden hour/blue hour because the light is simply more pleasing as it’s less contrasty and more colorful. Ultimately it’s a subjective thing so if you reject that idea that’s totally fine.
