Green carded, the CWD for repairs, the checker in the office the non-clerical time keeper, loco foreman, shed supervisor, all terms I knew as a very young cleaner/past cleaner, as we were known in 1974. I worked with Ben at Eastleigh, as a secondman, and, like you, having the joy of Ben going home to Alton riding up front when I was at Farnham. Thanks Geoff, brings back so many memories....
I love hearing these experiences of Railway men - they were in a different league compared to those of today! It was also nice to see S15 30841 known as "Greene King" in preservation an engine I have riden behind which is sadly no more! Great work Geoff - keep 'em coming!!
Wonderful atmospheric storytelling conjuring up pictures of characters and experiences of steam days. These are terrific pieces of social history. Many thanks to Geoff and Bob. I look forward eagerly to more of the same. What a fantastic record these ramblings are. Thank you
This is my era. I have fond memories of going down to Eastleigh Shed on a Sunday from Winchester to meet loco spotters. See the Shed Master if he agreed and going and see the loco's. A railway career never happened but I have rode on the footplate a number of times. Was given the opportunity to fire a loco / drive last year on on a southern railway .. Yes you then realize at 76 placing the coal the strength is no longer there. A few decades ago I did pass the fire and drive on a local steam railway - so I got there eventually!!
