Hey everyone. Sorry for the year long wait in between episodes, and apologies for the delay today. Ran into a lot of issues on the back end with getting it uploaded, but I’m happy it’s up and I hope you all enjoy it!
PS: Had some trouble pinning down an exact pronunciation for Hiram Bithorn (had to re-render several times because of it), so I truly am sorry if it still isn’t perfect
As a Puerto Rican, players like Clemente and Pudge are considered royalty there. Newer players like Baez and Lindor are also really beloved there. I remember even seeing a Puerto Rican commercial starring Lindor.
Definitely Italy cause I dont know anything about Italian baseball (not that I know much about Korean baseball but at least I knew they played baseball over there 🥴)
@sliim you want to be penpals? I've been learning Spanish by listening to games but could obviously use a friend who spoke the language and likes baseball...all I have is a coworker who speaks it but not a big baseball guy.
Fun Fact: At the Pirates stadium, PNC Park, the right field fence is 21 feet tall in honor of Roberto Clemente for his number and position. Also I'm interested in South Korean Baseball.
PR winter league has a rich history. Many stars and legends played winter ball in PR. Wade Boggs, Tony Gwynn, Rickey Henderson, Keith Hernandez, David Cone, Jim Thome to name a few.
I went from Puerto Rico to Cooperstown for Edgar's induction in July 2019. During the Sunday ceremonies a family who flew from Seattle, wearing Edgar's #11 jerseys and holding signs celebrating him, was occupying a spot near me and improvised a photo session. When the photographer said 'Say Cheese' I intervened and suggested that they say "Eeeeddddgarrrrrr !!!" instead. They did and loved it, laughing and having lots of fun taking the pictures !!! Then the father of that family walked towards me, and after addressing my Team 🇵🇷 PR jersey/cap combo he shook my hand, saying 'Thank You, for him (referring to Edgar), he saved Baseball for us in Seattle'. Needless to say, I was too moved to utter a word, couldn't respond to such words, that man was very grateful. It was the greatest weekend of my life !!!
Thank you for making this. I’m a die hard baseball fan and proud Puerto Rican. It often feels like Puerto Rican influence in American culture is ignored and underrepresented (among many others). This here made me super proud. Love the Japanese and DR vids. Look forward to the others.
Love this video. Baseball in PR is special and I really enjoyed this short series of videos. Would be fun to see more of them - Taiwan, Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Canada, Mexico, Italy, etc. Side note though, Juan Gone deserved neither of his MVPs - they both should've gone to ARod. The fact that he finished 9th in voting the year he went 40-40 is one of the biggest MVP voting embarrassments I've ever seen (in an era where they seemed to get MVP winners right roughly half the time even with obvious choices).
As a Puerto Rican and a baseball fan, hearing about Roberto Clemente always makes me tear up a little. On one hand, his untimely death is always devastating every time people talk about it. On the other hand, he was such a selfless person, and that commitment to serving others even at the cost of his own life, is part of what makes him so special. As for the next episode, I'd be interested in seeing Italy. I don't know much about European baseball.
My grandfather used to tell me about watching Clemente and Willie Mays play winter ball for the local team, The Crabbers, back in the 50s and wow I wish we could return to that. The local league here is still very good, albeit small.
I remember in 6th grade I read a loooot of baseball biographies because not many other books interested me besides the Series of Unfortunate Events. Anyway I blasted through a bunch like Babe Ruth, Sammy Sosa, Ken Griffey Jr. Alex Rodriguez, etc but my favorite was Roberto Clemente. He was the only one I knew nothing about prior but I fell in love with him. Not even his actual stats (though the basket catch is still amazing) but his life growing up and how much he helped his people out. One of the stories goes (anyone who reads this, correct me if I’m wrong) that he saw a man walking around with a missing foot and a worn out crutch. He wound up getting him a prosthetic foot and brand new crutches. His kindness was amazing and I was sad to read the rest of the book because of how his life ended too short. A few months later I was watching the all star game and saw them give the Roberto Clemente award to Albert Pujos and I remember being happy to see them honor his memory. Granted I should have known he was before but, that’s on me for not paying attention.
The only issue is they dont lump it up on to any streaming services. I did find one TH-cam channel that streamed games from Australia during the winter however.
This was a beautiful piece. I’m far more than grateful for this video, highlighting my country! Thank you so much!!! 🇵🇷 Please, support the local winter league!!! There are a few big leaguers that still play in this league and the games are fascinating!!!
As Dominican Clemente to us was is will forever be a legend not just in the field but, as a human as well, Clemente gave his life helping others fought for Latinos rights.
Saw someone comment about baseball in Italy and tbh that would be a good one for the next vid because I didn't know that they play it over in Italy I just knew of their WBC team
Hey SRS my apologies if I haven’t been joining the chat rooms in the locker room app, I’ve been having issues with the app and not sure when I’ll be able to access it. But thanks for inviting me to chat in the streams!
This series is so great there's nothing else like it. I really hope we get another one soon, and I vote Italy just because I feel like I know absolutely nothing about baseball there.
8:55 not only Pudge won the 1999 AL MVP after Juan "Igor" González won it the year after, but they are also from the same town of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico.
Nice Y’all got Anthony Rizzo , Joey Gallo, Aaron Nola, Yankee prospect Anthony Volpe, former MLB Players like Nick Punto, Francisco Cervelli, Team Italy for WBC should be interesting 🔥
The first Latin American born baseball player to play in the major leagues was Esteban Bellan, he wasn't from Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, or any other country you have highlighted in your videos, but from Cuba. You may want to research that, ahd and see if we Can get a little love in a video.
How come these videos sort of end? Might be good to revisit as there may be some interesting places to check out and these videos are really good. Venezuela would be a good one as there is plenty of baseball lore (you would also run across some cool names like Greg Maddux, Barry Bonds, Pete Rose who played there at some point in their early carreer) . Cuba would also make heck of a video and Mexico may make a super interesting video too. If we are speaking of East Asia I'd be super interested in a video of the Korean baseball league and, from what I saw in the WBC I sure would love to see what lore China Taipei has in their league.
Since you did Japan and DR and PR are neighbors, it makes sense to look at South Korea. But in all truth, I'm really craving the Baseball in Mexico vid.

I am Puerto Rican, and I am fine with it, and it was pretty close anyway. We just do not pronounce the letter "H"
A bit late to this comment but no need to apologize. You get unlimited passes
Will you do Cuba next?

My lita’s favorite of all time was Clemente, thank you for this.

That’s so cool!!!
Thank you again, this episode was fantastic. My choice is Italy 🇮🇹
A large part of the population of Puerto Rico has Italian ascendency, mainly from Corsica.
FINALLY, I’ve been waiting forever for you to highlight my island 🇵🇷🇵🇷
BEAUTIFUL IS BASEBALL THANK YOU. IN PUERTO RICO BASEBALL IS LIFE FOR YOUNG KIDS.

As a Seattle fan I gotta rep Edgar Martinez. He was born in NY but grew up in PR. Then casually came up to our rainy city and saved baseball.
I went from Puerto Rico to Cooperstown for Edgar's induction in July 2019. Also, I love Lindor. He is so much fun to watch. But Correa is a more talented player and the best active PR player.
Im from Puerto Rico but I love in Philadelphia. I want to thank you for this great video. You truly did a great job.
I love in Cincinnati
Roberto Clemente the best! Thanks for the video 🇵🇷

South Korea, and this episode made me cry hearing you talk about Clemente, really hit hard
