I notices alot of the comments saying this is pretty unfair, and yea it is. The centipede in the video is still "basically" a baby if it was an adult the fight would have been over immediately. Centipedes can tear and hook onto other insects with their legs and the venom gets so much stronger as they mature, which is why it took a day for the mantis to die a mature centipede can kill a mouse in a few seconds.
This centipede was small, compared to the mantis. The sand for a substrate wasn't great for the mantis, but was much better than glass, or a smooth surface would have been. The biggest thing was; the mantis made the mistake of grabbing the tail end of the centipede the first 2 times, and got bit. Then, once it grabbed the correct, head end of the centipede, it didn't keep it immobile, even after the centipede was eaten in half. A little irony going on there. This was about the first time I kind of rooted for the centipede, because it was small, and put up a great fight.
The Mantis didn't deserve to die, and wouldn't have if the centipede didn't bite his arm. Centipedes are venomous assholes, Mantises are good and harmless to humans.

This statement is only partially correct. Mantids are opportunistic sit-and-wait predators. In that sense they don't have a choice of what encounters they may have. But when a mantis is hanging upside down from a bush, and an opportunity comes, such as a scorpion or centipede wandering by, the mantis has the choice whether or not to engage. The scorpion or centipede doesn't have that choice. It's completely up to the mantis.

Especially when it comes to a centipede. They are extremely powerful and are one of the few insects that can give up a size advantage and still win.
