    You know, despite the clear focus on the "don't drink the water", I haven't realized until now how big a role water plays in this "purgatory" world. Kevin starts in a bathtub filled with water, saves lil Patti from drowning in a pool, and then he and Patti finish in a well where he has to drown her.

      @reatores  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definetely!

      In Greek mythology you drank the water from the River Styx to forget your human life to become part of the dead.

    Ah, that's the episode that changed everything wasn't it.
    A few pointers:
    Since this is Virgilius, much as in Dante's Inferno, he serves as Kevin's guide in Purgatorio.
    Why not drink the water? Because the river Lethe is the river of forgetfulness and all the souls drinking of its water forget their previous lives.
    Possibly the man on the bridge represents in that world Charon or Pluto, or both.
    Why does Kevin have to kill Patti thrice? I believe they're different incarnations of the various obstacles that Kevin has to go through - 1. His inability to deal with 'proper' family life, either in his previous marriage on in his current relationship. Patti adressed those issued directly.
    2. His younger self, probably admonished by Kevin Sr - that's probably why the scene at the well is so deeply moving. Kevin adresses his own guilt complex, that he's not 'good enough'.
    3. Finally Patti's monologue inside the well, her inability to leave her abusive husband resembles Kevin's inability to understand or enunciate what he really wants and needs. Remember that in Cairo, SE01 Ep08 Patt tells him that 'he understands'. The whole departure thing is just a decoy for a deeply seated depression which they both share.
    One more thing - I can't think of any other show where a character has two amazing monologues, one comic and the other one tragic, in the same episode. The shee quality and breadth of writing are staggering.

    • @reatores
      @reatores  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow!
      This Dante's thing really explains a lot... thanks for bringing that up! I mean, even not knowing that it's an absolutely wonderful episode. But that reference is really cool!
      And the obstacles Kevin needs to go through... poor guy haha! But I guess we all go through obstacles at some point in our lives, and reading what you wrote, I can think of some personal dillemas myself.
      Yes, 100% brilliant writing!!

    A bridge, being something that spans the gap between disconnected places ( often over water ), is always metaphorically important.
    The entire realm that Kevin was in was a place that lies in between realities, a bridge.
    Deus is that which connects all things, stands in between, and is therefore everywhere holding everything together.
    If you meet Deus on the bridge, the miracle of choice will be proffered, decisions must be committed to and free will must span the gap.
    Choose wisely, as love is what binds all as ONE.

    • @reatores
      @reatores  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting point of view!
      The concept of bridge and all. Guess Kevin did chose wisely.

    37:35 Erica said you make a wish, then you dig up the bird. If it's alive, you'll get your wish.
    And Erica had wished that Evie would be ok if she left John. And that was right before the girls disappeared.

    • @reatores
      @reatores  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it confused us a little bit, but it's part of the great writing. It wouldn't be half as good if they just showed that plot in a straight timeline.

    Erika was told that if she buried a bird for 3 days and it was alive when she dug it up, she could make a wish. The one time it was alive and flew away she wished that Evie would be ok without her (as Erika was planning to leave her husband). Then Evie disappeared (perhaps a different interpretation of the wish being successful, as Evie is away from her mother?). Since then all the birds Erika buries wind up dead.
    The balloons being delivered to Mary have 'Boy! and 'Congrats!'' written on them. They reminded me of the deer that ran out the house and got hit by the car when Kevin was trying to tranquilize it. That one had balloons caught in it's antlers with 'It's a girl!' on them.

    • @reatores
      @reatores  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooohh true! I didn't remember the deer with the balloon.
      About Erika, thanks, it's actually quite simple but the way this story was told made it a bit tricky, especially after she told that to Nora. But of course, that's precisely what made it so cool, the way it was written.

    Kevin's time with Patty, child and adult, just does my heart in. 💔 Compassion oozing for both of them.
    Btw, natural hallucinogens like Kevin Sr took don't kill. Esp not in mere seconds like with Kevin Jr. There are lots of natural poisons. Leafs and berries. Or Virgil could've used big dose of Opium to kill Kevin.
    Thought this info might help, without being a spoiler.

    A ideia de que aconteceu algo semelhante no dia que o Kevin tentou se matar não é tão estranha assim. Virgil diz para o Kevin que ele também teve que "batalhar" com seu adversário, o que leva a crer que ele teve que morrer que nem o Kevin. Talvez essa "batalha" tenha ocorrido no mesmo dia que o Kevin resolveu que iria se matar.

    • @reatores

      Thiago, concordo que não é tão estranho assim - afinal nessa série nada é tão estranho hahaha - mas na minha cabeça me parece q esse evento do Virgil batalhando faz mais tempo... sei lá, tb não sei justificar o porquê kkkkk

    Virgil (the old black man) is John’s father, not Erika’s. I’m not sure why it bothers me so much, but it’s driving me crazy that they keep making that mistake. LOL.

      S2 finale... When Michael comes home after John took Kevin to question him, Erica asks him where he's been. He says, "your dad's". Virgil was indeed Erica's dad. Not John's.
      Before you correct someone, you need to be certain.

      @@Eowyn187 - If you look on cast info, Virgil and John both have the same surname. I think the show itself is confused because of multiple writer’s influence and has implied he is the father of John at times and then Erika on other occasions. I just Googled some articles from media reporters, and I’ve seen some say John and others say Erika. Now, I have no clue. LOL.
