Third white kiwi chick hatched at Pukaha Mount Bruce

The third white kiwi chick to hatch at Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre is shown here, being removed from the incubator.
The chicked hatched overnight and Rangers found it in the incubator in the morning. Iodine is applied to the navel to aid in drying and preventing infection and then the chick is placed in a dryer to dry out and rest.

Seeing this, 11 years after it happened...this sweet tiny thing has maybe passed on by now.
But watching this made me sad to see this baby in a cold, unnatural, and sterile place, alone without a Kiwi parent's warmth and comfort, and how that baby struggled against a human the way it did. It didn't perceive the human as helping, not from the reaction. It just seemed so afraid, confused, uncomfortable, and lonely. 😢

It is not an albino but a recessive gene when a time there may been have many white Kiwis as Brown. Unfortunately there are too few of either
