Hate to be the bearer of bad news but the modern life mod (the one with the gun) has the survival crafting recipe for the gun disabled on default cause the actual recipe for the gun can not only be made on a normal table but also only requires 4 ingots arranged in a pistol shape and three iron nuggets arranged in a line ontop, JEI would show this recipe if it was craftable which means the only feasible way for him to obtain the gun is to make a deal with the devil
