- A few years back Geoff Lawton came and took this video of our Holyoke MA garden, Paradise Lot. This is a nice overview of the project and garden and you get a view of a majority of the permaculture food forest, and the plants we've been growing since 2004. One important thing to mention is that after this recording was done, Eric Toensmeier become a global leader in helping the world solve climate change. This garden is an inspiring example of what is in his two most recent books, The Carbon Farming Solution and Project Drawdown. In 2015 we ran some Soil Organic Matter tests and determined that we have sequestered 7.5 tons of carbon in 10 years on 1/10 of an acre.

Just eating good food the whole time. Picking as you go. Awesome! Most people if they got dropped in the middle of the woods wouldn't survive. We are the type of people who would plant a garden and come out fatter than we started. Thanks for the inspiration! Cheers from Aromas California!
Not everyone can do this... BUT those that have the passion and desire to grow food should be the standard in the Nation wide consciousness. Reward the Franchers, Urban Garden business, Carbon Cowboys... with equal subsidies or none for all producers of healthy food, locally grown, with the highest standards. I vote to even the playing field when it comes to 'the proper use of our tax $ as it relates to the real health-care of our nation.

during ww2 or as some call it "the great patriotic war",, we in the states were encuraged to have what were called victory gardens for sustainable living as many of the big farm cash crops went to the war effort and food was severley rationed . after the war , many cities , towns and villages said we cant have this and was outlawed . glad to see it coming back.
Can you believe that. I could just see some city employee putting up a notice that said they had to get rid of this stuff.

I was looking at solar charts for Boston area and wondering if a lean-to type of greenhouse, which would allow a north facing roof well insulated at 50-60 degree angle, and only glazing on the south side would work best there for winter growing, since the cold months are about 25-45 degrees sun elevation. Using soil on a lean to roof side would add insulation and work in summer months for warmer weather planting, for such as cucumbers zuchini, squash, tomatoes etc. Amazing what you've done there.
I just picked up your book and was blown away by what you've done with such a difficult spot. Thrilled to see the yard live!

Did you know there is a way to turn those seedy bananas to seedless banaana?
It is all about turning them from 2N to 3N. It is a bit technical but certainly doable.
banana seeds are edible. its common to harvest the seeds and throw away the 'fruit' for edibility. as eating the two together causes life threatening constipation..

It's wonderful to see every inch of this property put to use. However... we wonder about the toxins in asphalt paving, especially the newer types, which we heard are highly toxic. And the sealants often used on them. And the runoff of fluids from the cars parked there.
Stone dust, packed down, makes a wonderful driveway or parking area, and is much more eco-friendly than paving, especially asphalt, or concrete mixes that often contain additives that discourage the growth of molds and other things. Packed stone dust, or rock dust, driveways are usually cheaper than paving, too. Just don't try to scrape every last snowflake off them in winter. While not as dark as 'blacktop' they so still absorb and hold heat.
Water running off asphalt roofing is also a concern, as these contain heavy metals like cadmium, among others. There must be good ways to deal with this, though of course slate roofing, terra cotta tiles (in the right climate), cedar shingles (shakes were only used on minor outbuildings, like woodsheds; in humid climates and with sufficient pitch/slope to the roof, these last as long as the ecologically damaging asphalt shingles), or metal not coated in toxic substances are all better choices.
I agree :) The asphalt driveway was already there and in good condition when the house was purchased. It's to much of a cost to remove and replace at this time. Although the asphalt will not last forever as it is already cracking in spots. As it degrades the hope is to remove it and replace with gravel and discontinue parking spaces to make more garden! Hopefully ride sharing of cars will become more normalized and we won't have a need for parking in the future :)

Nope. We tried cooking it and the flesh was super bitter, yuck! Not sure if pickling would make less bitter, but someone should try and post their experience here :)

Glad you are inspired! What is a Chinese straight? Is that another name for bamboo? If so, mostly they are a fantastic plant for multiple uses in the garden, fencing, posts, trellis, poles etc... Birds seem to love the protection and roost in them. It forms a great wind break, and the new shoots are edible
