    This is still the best range etiquette (=safety) video I’ve seen. And I’ve seen a lot. Authoritative, memorable, and very watchable. All necessary to have any effect. Bravo. And I just noticed the rain in the last scene. I’m not stopping dammit. It’s important. Beautiful.

    Have to agree with you about cans over ear plugs, week before lockdown used my custom moulded earplugs clayshooting and my ears are still ringing (exasperated mild tinnitus I have anyway) so bought some more cans with comfort gel pads for optimum seal.

      I also bought moulded plugs and was disappointed. They just do not attenuate the noise enough. Went back to my over ears

    Great video. I would like to say good outdoor footwear is very important good fit tread boots or wellington's not trainers! lots of guns have been destroyed through slips and falls and could be deadly if you have one up the spout! 👌

    Hello David, I;m so glad that someone has put this up however as a former RCO , I have seen several examples of a cartridge not detonating when the trigger was pulled, obviously this could be down to several reasons but if the primer has been struck, don't instantly unload the round and put it in your pocket, I have seen primers fizz for over 30 seconds before finally detonating and if its in your front pocket, it wont end well shall we say. Thanks again.

    I was once on a clay shoot where a person was loading and closing their gun behind the stand and awkwardly lifting the barrels into the stand causing the barrels to sweep other shooters on the next stand over. It was so dangerous I told the person to stop doing it which they did not. I don't know if the person was new at shooting or what but I proceeded to demonstrate how to load the gun over the bar down range and had to tell them I would call shoot management if they didn't load down range.

    Some really good advice here. No harm in being reminded. It's easy to get complacent. Might have covered footwear, cartridge carrying, what to do when it goes click and nowt happens! also personally don't agree with cans vs plugs. Never got on with cans myself. Don't always get a good seal due to glasses, pinch behind the ears and interferes with gun mount. Use custom moulded plugs. Works for me.

    David thank you for another good video. I'm a firearms instructor on my side of the pond for our dept. and during training cycles we will have up to 17 shooters on a live line depending on if it's a requalification course or an academy. I always use both electronic muffs as well as plugs due to the very loud conditions. The electronic muffs make it so that even with the plugs I can communicate and hear while still providing decent hearing protection. ALL shooters on our ranges are required to use muff type hearing protectors due to better protection as the sound waves won't travel through the bones around the ear and also the visual conformation that ear protection is in place.
    We require eye protection at all times on the range and I have several examples that have been damaged due to splash back of dirt, debris, and bullet jacket depending on the type of target and range. A baseball cap is also required for much the same reason. Thanks again.

    Another excellent video David. I was particularly interested in your views about closing the gun. Wood to metal was drummed into me many many years ago and by BASC when I took their shotgun proficiency course, also many years ago. I can’t get on with “Cans” over my ears, as always hit the stock with them. I am surprised at your view on custom (especially electronic) moulds, but they seem to work for me.

    A gun slip doesn't show people your gun is safe, it doesn't really show them much of anything other than it's pointed at the ground or the sky. There could be unspent cartridges in the barrel(s). As a bystander you don't really know. The only way you really know a gun is safe is if you visually see a broken gun or an open action. Of course gun slips are ubiquitous and are a very safe way of carrying your gun around a clays ground, but it doesn't allow people to visually see the gun. Here in the US I used to go to a range that required people to walk their guns onto the range without a sleeve or a case with actions open and barrels up so that the range safety officer didn't have to guess at whether or not the guns were loaded. It made perfect sense.

    Great video thanks. How best to carry a closed and loaded gun as 'back gun', behind a line of beaters? I was told barrels up, against my shoulder with triggers pointing forward. The main hazard being trip/fall. Awareness of beaters and dogs position obviously key and if a fall happens its concentrate on keeping barrels away from beaters line rather than saving myself from falling in a patch of bramble.

  • @countryboy2329
    @countryboy2329 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For a start you should never put your finger on the trigger as you close the gun no matter what form of shooting you do. Shutting your gun to the floor is so you don’t shoot anyone infront of you (beaters etc) and you would never shut a gun in a direction of a dog, as you should be fully aware of your surroundings before closing the gun. Having dirt thrown back in your face is better than injuring or potentially killing someone if the gun was to ever go off.
    Always shut the gun to the floor and be fully aware of your surroundings.
    Never put your finger on the trigger until you are going to shoot.
    It’s a joke that you would say something like this, this is how accidents happen when new clay shooters or novices in general go to try game shooting for the first time.

  • @michaelplank8966

    Dont agree whem i used to teah kids with a auto the button saftey is full proof the triger cant be pulled the saftey catch is very good what you do is dangerous but i was taught by gamekeepers 40 years ago i agree with some of it when your in the cage keep your auto up or your double im a big person on the safty catch it works

  • @Top_Shots_Photography
    @Top_Shots_Photography 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Firstly all i must say love the channel but a couple of things ,,, never close the gun barrels up - it will lead to a mistake, never close a gun with your finger on the trigger .. the dog running around out of control analogy does not stick, guns do not just go off so when you shut it at the ground it will not go off as you will not have your finger on the trigger! if it were to go off it would be in the soil. no harm
    if you do it your way before long that muzzle will be dropped and the gun will become horizontal and if it goes of a greater chance if injuring a person .
    probably the worst safety video by a professional i have seen. and yes i am a shooting coach and instructor.

  • @TomYourGod
    @TomYourGod 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I feel I need to qualify this comment by saying I have watched your videos for years and this is a great shooting channel...
    But this is easily the worst video you have ever posted. Always close stock to barrels! Words cannot express how much I despise watching clay shooters close barrels to stock. Shot going into the ground does no harm. If your dog is out of control and runs in front of you that would be tragic, but a dead dog is nothing compared to a dead person. If you teach people to raise barrels to close a gun, inevitably they will one day do it on a horizontal plane. It can't possibly be aimed at a person if it is into the floor.
    Apologies if I'm ranting, but this is a pet peeve for me and I can't believe you would advocate it!!

    • @davidcoldicott8424
      @davidcoldicott8424 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spot on Tom, he also has his finger on the trigger!!! There is nothing safe about this method. He would be going home early if any of the keepers I know saw him doing it on a game day
