Fun fact: studio el Zahrah which made all of the Arabic dub on Spacetoon, changed a lot of the script of the original anime and changed the story to be appropriate with the middle east culture and religious beliefs, which I see as a very good thing that's affect a lot of children's childhood and when they grow up and saw the difference between the original Japanese anime and the dub, they know what the studio made the right decision.
So this is why no hero in the entire history of Arabic Spacetoon anime ever had a girlfriend or a lover, they were all just 'sisters' or such.
Hey at least they kept the violence in DBZ and Conan... It's funny to see the parents nowdays complain about modern shows like gumball or spongebob for being "too violent" Those tv shows may apprear stupid and confusing for some to enjoy due to the shitpost/meme-level humor that only seems to catter better with Westerners as our meme culture is quite underdeveloped, but fucking hell! Conan can get away with 50 episodes containing up to 10 mentions of suicide and STILL get beloved by Arab Karens of all people! Those were the days when kids content had real education man! It's not like there were cases of kids dying when roleplaying some of these cases (Even the Voice Actress of Conan Amal Sa3d Al-Deen addressed those questionable rumors in an Egyptian talk-show here th-cam.com/video/aoRONAVVFPo/w-d-xo.html)... Afterall, this is the dub that aired all the episodes banned in Europe for being too violent. But I'm sure it wasn't that bad, atleast it's not like modern violent cartoons where they have... girls wearing shorts and... If there's anything that we can reasonably blame for some of the """meanspirited behaviors""" of young Arab kids that people have an issue with for no reason it would probably us leniantly letting them get exposed by MBC 2 and the PG-13 dube-bro crime movies at a very young age and with confident ease. Nowdays (more-so around 2008-2019) kids would generally look down brutaly apon animation and kids channels calling them lame af, but those who do enjoy animation would get bullied and flatout suspected by their classmates to be mentally crippled for liking a cartoon show of all thing (because I know I have when I was pretty into Adventure Time). Of course the big elephant in the room would be the internet, and more interestingly the modern landscape of mainstream music culture being significantly bumbarded with the """most problematic""" of rap songs that I first-hand frequently saw sibilings play at kids birthday parties. So what? you don't see us 90's kids be into crime or violence inspite of the sedist media we grew up with too or ever the harsh violent conditions many of us lived/unfortunately still live through, so who's to say if kids wouldn't be functional adults in societly based souly on the products they consume? (that are often tamer than ours) We only have a gripe on this generation for being more disconnected from Arabic culture itself, so what? are we that too high up our horse to simply get along? I don’t agree about the accent part because the formal arabic is the most sophisticated one and allows for a wide variety of vocabulary and as a kid you don’t even think about it being different or the same voice actors. Spacetoon put in so much effort to make its shows align with our morals and culture which I will forever be grateful for.

I am an indian and back when i used to live in saudi arabia for the majority of my childhood, spacetoon and mbc3 were the only channels i had for watching cartoons. Spacetoon is a big nostalgia for me with all the different planets for the themes. Beautiful memories from this channel. Also every thursday mbc used to show animated movies😁
And this channel also telecasted in India also. Really nice channel. now it is only in the memories because it is stopped in 2009.

but spacetoon was a really important part of my life since i was 5, and i'm 21 btw

spacetoon's most famous line was that it's the channel for the youth of the future and indeed it was
it was kinda weird because we had the same level of mainstream audience that anime now has worldwide all the way back in the 1980s if not before. they used formal arabic in the dub so as arabic listeners we all could relate and at the same time our parents liked that it was formal arabic because that's what we were supposed to learn in school yet we were learning it willingly and enjoying it lol. the music was a mix of poetry with rock/ jazz, a weird mix but it somehow worked out so well that we still memorize these songs to this day, and the singers are hounded and highly sought after just to sing these songs. the themes that the dubbed anime tried to instill good morals. rather than goku being a battle freak who only fights because he likes fighting, they shifted things a bit and now he is fighting for his friends and family rather just cuz he wants to fight and it just so happens that his family and friends are in danger.
Speaking as an arabic guy that watched SpaceToon throughout his childhood, I’d like to point somethings out.
The use of the (Fussha) dialect, or the standard arabic language is actually one of the great things that made SpaceToon great and stood out from the other cartoon channels like MBC3 and the arabic nickelodeon. We as arabs put the Fussha in a high regard, being able to write it and speak it properly is one of the most important factors in our lives, so for SpaceToon to dub it in Fussha, made children around the arab world get accustomed to it and learn it from an early age. So we dont see it as being boring or shallow when characters spoke using Fussha
And speaking of the dubbing team and voice actors. Even though there wasn’t many of them, and you could spot them in different shows, it didn’t make it annoying to hear their voices repeatedly, infact the voice actors are loved and cherished for their amazing performance and for making our childhood great.
You may disagree with me on this point, but Spacetoon sometimes changed the storyline or the relationship between characters to fit their audience. We as arabs and the majority muslims have a set of values and morals that we follow, so when a cartoon/anime comes without filtering, it will affect the children watching and change their values for what we believe is the worst. Thats why SpaceToon is heavily loved and has a strong fanbase. When they chose a cartoon/anime to dub they chose it with care, and were careful to choose the correct lines to say and clips to show, to send a strong message filled with values to the children watching, one of their famous quotes is “The channel of the youth of the future”.
On the other hand, theres channels like MBC3 or nickelodeon that dubbed the cartoons without filtering, and mostly used everyday dialects that didn’t help the children understand the beautiful language that is arabic or Fussha. The shows they aired also lacked any values or morals in them, thats why in the arab world they’re viewed as kinda bad or not so great compared to SpaceToon.
Sorry for the long comment, but I just want to show how much SpaceToon has impacted a lot of its audience for the better, and I wanted to share the love I have for it.

Fun fact for anyone who watched "ana wa ukhti" or Me and my sister. The plot for that was so far removed from the original plot that it is actually straight up hilarious. The original title of the show was "Mama is a 4th grader" and it follows the story of a 4th grader who has to take care of her future baby when she accidentally slips through time. But the arabic version made her an alien baby and the mc just loved her like her sister XD.
Don't forget the Space Power channel. It was also my first introduction to some awesome Arabic anime theme songs!
Also, spacetoon Action Planet was probably the most badass thing that I have ever heard of.

Speaking of the Arabic dub of DB and DBZ, they got home video releases by Al-Wadi on VHS and DVD from 2002 to around the mid-2000s.
I grew up in Morocco til I was 16 and this is a massive nostalgia trip for me. I agree that the dragoball op was amazing in its tone and I find myself giving it a watch every now and then. Another amazing op they did was the original digimon adventure which not only is iconic but demonstrates what the english dub could've been had it remained faithful to the japanese soundtrack. also cosette (or les miserables as it's actually refered to) was amazing and I don't believe there's an english dub which is such a shame. loved that show growing up.

6:04 "which im sure Americans would balk at" my brother in spice, every children's show in American television, regardless of the channel (CN, Nichelodeon, PBS) had Christmas episodes. My public school had Christmas movie events and Easter egg hunts. While one could say that neither holiday fully embodies the religious intent that they were initially supposed to have, it still wasn't something my family celebrated and it was easy to feel othered any time those seasons came about.
As an American Jordanian kid, coming over to Amman and seeing "Ramadan Kareem!" on TV made me feel seen in a way that American children's media never really could. It contributed to this sense that my traditions and holidays weren't "abnormal", my zait w zaatar sandwiches weren't "weird", etc. Not sure why that's worth balking at?

As someone who didn't get to grow up watching spacetoon, hearing my older siblings talk about it and reminisce about the times were they used to crowd themselves up against the TV monitor does bring a smile to my face, although it saddens me that I didn't get to experience such a thing. I like the fact that they gave anime and western animation a remodel and delivered it to the Arabic communities in such a way that enables those who watch their programming to develop some sort of a bond towards it, a bond that I never saw anyone who watched or is still watching MBC 3 and Cartoon Network develop.
I've never related to a comment as much as this, I wish I was a bit older just to have that experience though I do have some small memories of the shows especially the music and ads since they are on repeat
Well, yeah, same with you, i didnt watch CN Arabia until 2018 and i watched a little bit of Spacetoon, well but i grew up more with MBC3 and Baraem. (Also MBC aired some Warner Bros., Cartoon Network (until 2010) and Nickelodeon, even Baraem was airing Playhouse Disney shows and others (even before BeIN aquired Baraem and Jeem)

About "Al fusha" standard classical Arabic; it was an admirable choice since it is comprehensible for almost all Arabs, helped Children learn the language and gave a much needed sense of unity.
I’m Moroccan and only know the Moroccan dialect because I grew up in the west so I didn’t understand shirt of spacetoon but shit was still good asf.
This channel was my childhood ... When I hear the original opening songs they had in their anime , I get overwhelmed with so much nostalgia I start crying
not really arab but i did grow up watching in two main channels, MBC3 and Spacetoon, but what I always looked forward to was the girls only block, and just even looking at the special 3d planet transitions was fine with me, but my favorite has got to be the sports one. even though i couldn't understand jack about arabic bcuz I'm filipino, I still enjoyed watching it (I think i remember there being a paid cable version of the english version of spacetoon but we were too poor to afford it so we stayed with the arabic version)

I see it is totally not ok to use dialects in Arabic media for children as we have too many and it’s gonna be hard for the child to understand all of them. Another thing is that Fusha gives MORE character and strength than dialects and it doesn’t sound at all like news shows. Imagine if it was dubbed in Syrian, it’s gonna be a comedy show or it’s gonna sound like باب الحارة

Grew up on SpaceToons in Ethiopia, it never had any kind of English Dub so I never understood anything that wasn't said in English and to my surprise a few Amharic words I later found out were borrowed from Arabic words. So I could only ever watch the anime for the action and pretty pictures for the most part. And yes, a lot of the Arabic Openings are my favorite versions. Batman, Dragon Ball, Thunder Jet, Dragon Quest, Digimon and especially POKEMON.

@@Seven7601 That sadly must be the case, because I had never seen it broadcasted on the Arab Satellite Package I grew up with. There were other channels that were in english, but SpaceToons was not one of them.
Yo just to add a lil info: some of cgi mini animations were actually what personalized this channel the most cuz most of them (take worm jumpscare thingies for example) were used as 'bumpers' if you're not familiar with the concept it's actually inspired by the brief weirdcore clips western channels would display when it's close to children's nighttime and to prevent them from watching "adultswim", now same thing spacetoon did to send kids to bed and to prevent them from watching "spacepower" cuz it had more violent shows I guess
spacetoon was the best channel for me . it made up my childhood a lot. and the best show i was watching back then was thunder jet (هزيم الرعد) and virtual fighter (المقاتل النبيل)

its true that you said in spacetoon they used anime and translated it but after watching the real version of the cartoon it made me realize that spacetoon changed the story and made it less dirty or all about love and stuff.. for example Coonan, sandy bell, Emily, me and my sister etc. the Japanese version was more dirty or more for grown ups like its all about love girlfriends dating and female and male relationships, so i was soo shocked after seeing the real version and how my mind used to be so small that i didnt get the meanings and dirty hints in it and i am thankful to spacetoon because it all reminds me of my childhood and my past days with my siblings.
Technically in japan those were still originally aimed at kids and teenagers, it's just that the Japanese are more OK with that stuff than the west, let alone the middle east.
Oh my god... so i looked up Remi and it turns out it's a cartoon adaptation of one of the very first books I've ever read and fell in love with, Sans Famille by Hector Malot. I never knew there was such a thing.

There were a ton of animes that were a some what collaboration withsome European countries and they produce quite the collections of animes based on novels (mostly frensh), spacetoon aired a lot of them.
I grew up in Spain and every summer I'd go back to Morocco to my grandparents and the first thing I'd do is switch on Spacetoon on my grandma's TV for Arab Conan. It was my fav thing ever. Conan is still huge in Spain and the Spanish (Catalan) dub has now reached the thousand episode mark (yes, it's amazing). So yeah, I owe spacetoon and spacepower so much for making me a weeb as I grew up. I will never get the Arab OP of Conan out of my head.
There was also Digimon, Sailor moon. There were a big part of our childhood but this channel not only chaped my childhood but it was also my ticket to the anime world.

I grew up and currently live in Ethiopia and space toon used to be my gold mine of just good entertainment. my country is dominantly christian but Islam is pretty big and for most of my child hood I was surrounded buy people who spoke Arabic and I actually picked up the language from watching those shows. Thank you for this video very much appreciated.
Also to this day I can't believe they edited an eiichi (ranma half) into a perfectly pg slice of life comedy and still managed to tell a story that was not only consistent but also entertaining and "respectful" of the source material. That to me is their greatest achievement and why I respect them.
As an Arab myself (I’m from Lebanon), this TV channel is so nostalgic to me too. Most videos that talk about it are in Arabic and it’s great to see that there is one in English because I don’t speak Arabic very well. Since I mostly grew up in west Africa with French channels that aired cartoons, I know French better compared to Arabic. But I remember the times where I would travel to Lebanon on vacation, I would always turn on spacetoon or MBC3 to watch cartoons, even if I didn’t understand Arabic too well, it was still entertaining to watch.

I actually disagree regarding the arabic dialect used, I loved the formal dialect as kid and didn’t mind it. That’s a big reason why me and all my siblings today can talk and write pretty well in that dialect.
Your criticism of the use of classical Arabic is unacceptable (الفصحى). It is what distinguishes Spacetoon, which is the language that unites Arabs. I was born in 2000 and Speactoon was a big part of my childhood. by the way, the channel has gone through many big changes since the early 2000s that you did not mention. I believe that the dubs are so impressive especially when looking at the fact that there are no big montage businesses in the Arab world for producing Local cartoons so there are not enough writers and etc, which makes producing expensive. sorry if what I mentioned isn't so clear, I would be happy with any correction.
Deff a nostalgic rush for me, Spacetoon really was something. It makes me really sad to see the generations after us missing on such thing. It really surprises me how I remember every single song every planet every commercial, I wish I can go back to that time.

6:00 I want to humbly disagree ''separating religion from children programming isn't a thing in Arab countries'' it's not really just an Arab thing it's also in Americans media as well the inclusion of Christianity in western cartoons from wedding in a Church to celebrating Christmas and many other things, even atheist now a day in America still preform this religious activities even if they don't believe in it. and also in Japanese anime they have many Buddhism themes in it like temples monks etc. people don't realise this because it's the norm to them. so for Arabs its the norm to have Islamic themes in media while in western societies it's Christianity.
What I love about spacetoon is how it features planets with different themes based on whatever genre of show or movie it plays and the fact that most are either Japanese or influential French anime shows and you could tell that the way it was presented in the early 2000s aged well but in 2013 they renewed and made them more modern and had new shows here and there but what's fascinating is that it's random on which planet will be presented and which show will air for it so if let's say you wanna watch dragon ball z then you'll have to pray that the planet action gets aired and shows DragonBall otherwise you'd have to wait for the cycle of the planets to repeat and hope it airs it but other than that it's still amazing
as a person who isn't a arab but knows what spacetoon is, it nice to hear someone else's opinion of it that was the main audience for spacetoon

I've always been fascinated by the originality of the program management of spacetoon. You can see how they were not randomly throwing shows off our faces, they were sorting them into categories referred to as planets. To me, this was genius, for us children who could've accepted any form of visual entertainment whether it was some goofy animation ads between anime/ KIDS shows or the shows themselves. Also, a very good and nostalgic video thumbs up for that.
23 yo Tunisian here and god that channel is just epic thank u for this vid...SpaceToon and later on SpacePower are the reason behind my love for anime....Well by time the dub got actually very good though ... animes like black cat ,Gankutsuou and hunter x hunter got a really good dub .. fusha or modern standard arabic actually gave them an attitude and attracted kids to them because fusha is associated with eloquence .Syrian voice actors and dubbing studios went through another peak by dubbing turkish soap operas in the syrian dialect this time and that's how tukish soft power reached the MENA region , going with the syrian dialect was a smart choice as the dialect was already popular thanks to syrian dramas , the only competition of Egyptian dramas in the region ,plus the dialect was associated with a duality of attitude and softness so were the early dubbed turkish dramas .... they also dubbed korean dramas in the Fusha (modern standard arabic) and they were actually popular and people watched them with their kids to impove their Fusha....back in the days soap operas from latin america were once popular in the region too xd arabs dubbed eveything but american content they'd just give us subtitles xd

This was the most memorable part of my child hood but I am from Ethiopia so we only had access to these shows but it was funny because It played such an important part of my child hood I was able to learn how to hear and speak Arabic and no one knew where I learned an entire Language from
It's very funny how Futurama aired on spacetoon, albeit with heavy censorship. (and all jokes targeted agianst fox were altered to mock TV in general instead since the jokes wouldn't make any sense to an arab child.)
Also at 2:59 is that aqua teen hunger force that is on the list of aired shows? That has to be a mistake.
AOA, this is a great video and a good nostalgia trip. On the topic of Al Fushah, I just wanted to point out that I was a non-arabic speaking kid growing up, this consistancy helped me pickup arabic at least to the point where i could understand the news, though it never translated well to me speaking arabic IRL since its still far off from how ppl naturally speak.
If the shows didnt follow the fushah format, I am sure I would have not picked up on as much arabic as i did otherwise.

Thank you for making this video and your efforts deserves all the credits you need, Spacetoon and Space Power were like one of my favorite TV Programs I've ever watched when I was a young kid, there were times where I watch stuff like MBC3, MBC2, MBC Action and even MTV Arabia as well. I gotta say that without Spacetoon and Space Power....TV won't be big part of my life next to Video Games and Music, nowdays sadly I don't watch TV much more often than I used to before
Regarding the use of الفصحى I believe this what makes #SpaceToon so unique and I really can’t ignore the fact that I’m in love with this amazing type of dubbing, I really appreciate your efforts and thanks for this amazing video.

Hello I'm an American Palestinian that lived in the Arab world for about 10 years now and let me say that you covered the subject really well, but I say that your research was done on the really old version of spacetoon some of which was back when it started. Some details I want to share:
1-The planet thing was used untill about three years ago when they stop.
2- The songs like how the dog barks and awfull animation was honestly gone from 5 years ago at least and I've never seen it since.
3- I agree a lot with how they speak like a news reporter and that's because for kids they pronounced every word as it should be in it's formal (bland) way, so the kid learns the word and then proceed to say it in his/her accents acquired by their race (Egyptian, Saudi, Syrian, Kuwait, etc). It be a problem if they choose one accents to dub.
4- The batman song is in my top 3 :) good taste

Wait, Only Planed History and Movies were removed in the 2013 rebranding, and they came back in 2017. If I check how the spacetoon websites was 3 years ago, it will show me all the planets except for those two.
In short, if they did get rid of their planets there would've been a far bigger outcry from their fanbase and Arab normies...

Even tho they might use the same voice actor and shows that are from other regions, what makes Spacetoon shows and anime special is the voices it's so nostalgic and that there are so many inappropriate scenes in the original show, that in Spacetoon they edit it out or change it to make it appropriate for kids to watch and for same voice actors it's not 100% used for everything but still the voice actors were amazing and matched all the characters! and in my opinion, I loved it and I still do and I'm proud overall 🤩😄I love the video!❤

Thank you for this video. As an Arab who loved watching Spacetoon and specifically Arabic anime growing up(and still do), I agree with a lot of what you shared, but I do have to respectfully disagree about Fusha Arabic in anime being boring and unnatural, I actually found that it pulled me more into the story and characters since I didn't compare it to the news as I wasn't watching the news as a child. I do agree though that the theme songs are amazing and Detective Conan and Al Qanas will always be one of the best Arabic dubbed anime! :)
Plus my little brother (who's now 19) his first words were in Fusha when we are Egyptians and it was super impressive that a child speaks only in Fusha

Nostalgia is a sick drug man. I have not watched Spacetoon or anything Arabic dubbed in 15 years. Not since I discovered anime is actually Japanese and started watching everything in its own language. Nevertheless, I can never deny that the theme songs and OPs are my favorite part of those shows. To this day I still remember them clearly but I would not be caught dead watching an Arab dub ever again.
Although if it a multi national project with different dialects in the same show then I would certainly be tempted so long as they keep Fus'ha to the OP songs

Standard Arabic is much much prettier than the dialects which most of them are mix with other languages words... If we were all speaking the true standard Arabic you wouldn't say it's like a news... Cause the language is the same
I am an Egyptian and I never thought I would find a video like this in English. Great job dude. This video is amazing. I am very surprised for the amount of effort you exerted to make this video. Also your Arabic is very good. It's actually excellent for someone who spent most of his life in America. I only disagree with you on your opinion on the formal version of Arabic (الفصحى) because I find it very good and it suits the great characters in anime. It's also a good way to teach Arabian kids (الفصحى) because it's very important to learn. Also all the Arabs should speak like that because It's the original version of Arabic and also the language of the Holy Quran but unfortunately the occupation affected us and all the Arabs and made us speak in different weird versions of Arabic instead of speaking in the same original version of Arabic (الفصحى). We actually became ashamed of our original language and we make fun of anyone speaking in it unfortunately because we consider it very old and outdated. That's why I appreciate Spacetoon for airing anime and cartoons in the formal version of Arabic (الفصحى) to teach kids the original Arabic and let them know how great it is.

I LOVED SPACETOON ARABIC even though I never understood arabic. Just growing up in the UAE but with little arabic language knowledge made it hard to understand the dubbing but I loved the shows so much that I watched regardless. I'm from Pakistan but was born and grew up my whole life in UAE until university years.
Some of my favorite shows were Hamtaro, Slam Dunk, Bidamon, Beyblade, and some more. And I loved those planet animations as well as the arabic skits.
For your information, various channels around the regions, like Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudia ,did broadcast anime shows back in the 80's and 90's before Spacetoon was a thing. I recall Future Boy Conan was one such show at the time. Also you forgot to mention Space Power TV which was the more "edgy teen" version of Spacetoon in the late 2000's. It featured Series like Naruto, One Piece and some non anime ones like Mythbusters, Adams Family and even a video game review show of some kind if i remember. There were other kids channel like MBC3, Cartoon Networks, Disney and Nickelodeon but none really captured the demographic as much as Spacetoon. Most Anime's AFAIK were based on the Japanese Versions while others like Yu-Gi-Oh! were based on the American version.
The worst part about Spacetoon localization is the alteration to the episodes and plot, since it's a family cartoon channel, it had to remove or change the following:
Removing some gore scenes,
Remove mentions of evolution (Digimon, Pokemon as well as Zarbon from DBZ transformation which were either removed or disgusted as "calling for a friend" and "removing a mask").
Removing nudity or "revealing" shots (No fan service for you!).
and Remove any indication to "dating" and make it as if they are engaged or married (Detective Conan for example).
Note that this never really happens on Movies and TV Shows intended for more mature audience , especially nowadays in 2020. Other changes include localization of character names like DBZ have slightly alteration to character names and Captain Tsubasa having more Arabic names. However some shows like Detective Conan pretty much retained all of the Japanese names.
It fairly safe to say that a portion of anime fans (Weebs) currently in the Arab world could be traced back to them growing up with such Cartoons and Animes. Mostly watching through *totally legit sources* with Arabic/English Subtitles added on them and saying random broken Japanese lines they don't understand lol. Honestly i'm glad you did this video as i was thinking about doing one in the past but i'm simply not good enough and you seem to remember a lot better than i do.

Side note: the Pokémon dub that was made in 2000 and aired on MBC - when it used to be a single channel- was almost perfect. They kept the evolution , overall plot , crack up jokes and kick ass songs - i still remember that team rocket one -. The censorship was very minor and far between.
Unfortunately they only worked on the first few seasons- I think they stopped at johto - due to that shitty “campaign” originated from a fourm. This drastically impacted Digimon localization to a retarded degree and became too painful to watch.
Weirdly enough somewhere in 2005-2006, an obscure channel called ART tennnz decided to continue localizing Pokémon from what the old company left off. The only problem was the shitty voice acting, they had ZERO energy and sounded like they are reading from a google translation script.
I don’t see anything wrong with altering plots for some shows, as a kid in the MIDDLE EAST you really shouldn’t be looking at fan service lmao. I don’t remember anything about the evolution you’re talking about, but I honestly love that they changed stuff like fan service and any mention of gods.

the idea of space toon to cater to the next generation and give them a moral code and ethical road to walk on was something special they really wanted to grow a strong resilient youth who will make a difference in the future.

fusha is understood all around the arabic so it makes sense to use it on everything plus they used to air some animated songs teaching arabic rules and grammar and poetic seas. about the openings its way deeper and meaningful than the original which we cant understand anyway so they made it more exciting to watch an arabic intro like غريندايزر plus i cant believe he didn't talk about spacetoons cooler brother spacepower greatest channel ever created so when you grow up from spacetoon you automatically get into spacepower with the bloody animes and tv shows and they already knew that we are gamers so they had game power first about gaming in arabic anyways great video
